WarEagle76 Posted February 1, 2012 #28 Share Posted February 1, 2012 Simple answer.....no. Not true on a recent Star Princess cruise. Several officers smoked daily while sitting at the end of the bar (on the port side of the ship), several tables on the port side near the bar were also smoking tables and smoking was allowed along railing above the Terrace Pool on the port side. IECalCruiser Posted February 1, 2012 #29 Share Posted February 1, 2012 (edited) I know that the Terrace Pool is for adults, the question I have is, can you smoke by the bar by the pool?We can only comment on the Grand, Golden, Star and Sapphire and there may have been changes since January 15th but I doubt it. Depending upon the ship there are lounge chairs or tables in the Horizon Terrace area and smoking is permitted on the port side of that area. Smoking is also permitted on the port side of the Sun and Sports decks above. People were also allowed to smoke on the lounge chairs next to the Terrace Pool on the port side on the Sapphire in September. RickEk Posted February 1, 2012 #30 Share Posted February 1, 2012 Where is the smoking policy outlined? We are looking at Princess for our Alaskan cruise in 2013 and this could be a big plus for us. Here's the link: http://www.princess.com/learn/faq_answer/onboard/experience.jsp And here's the text... interesting bit about e-cigs... Keeping the comfort of our passengers a priority, and in consideration of consumer studies which show smokers are a small minority of passengers, Princess has implemented the following smoking policy: Designated Smoking Areas Clearly marked “Designated Smoking Areas” are available onboard and include a sufficient number of ashtrays that are emptied regularly. Generally, these areas include cigar lounges, a section of the nightclub and casino, as well as a portion of the open decks. As a safety precaution, passengers are reminded to properly dispose of cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco, which are never to be thrown overboard as this may be sucked back into the ship and cause fires. Stateroom Smoking Policy Update For all voyages departing after January 15th, 2012, Princess Cruises will prohibit smoking in passenger staterooms and balconies. This policy change reflects the preferences of a vast majority of our passengers who value having their primary living space (both stateroom and balcony) smoke-free. As balconies are a hallmark of Princess Cruises, we believe it is important to keep this peaceful space clear of smoke. Violations to this policy will result in a $250 fine for each occurrence, which will be charged to the passenger’s stateroom account. Keeping with the global trend toward more restrictive smoking policies and honoring the wishes of our passengers, we feel this change will enhance our onboard experience and do more to help our passengers escape completely. Electronic Cigarettes The use of electronic cigarettes is permitted in all areas onboard with the exception of dining areas and the Princess Theater. However, should a fellow passenger in the vicinity feel inconvenienced and complain, even after being told the difference between electronic cigarettes and real cigarettes, we will ask the passenger to refrain from smoking the electronic cigarette. gometros Posted February 1, 2012 #31 Share Posted February 1, 2012 I am just back from the Emerald. I too am pleased that there is no smoking allowed on balconies although I generally have an inside room. At no time did I smell smoke in the hallways, elevator lobbies etc. However, I found that the smell coming from Gatsby's Casino was horrible, it could be smelled when you were at the Passenger Services desk, in the hallways outside the casino and it was terrible on deck 7 for people that were 'walking the promenade deck' for exercise and had to wander through the smoking section. Never noticed it on prior cruises so am assuming it is because those folks cannot smoke on their own balcony. Several times I ended up walking through the smoker's lounge on the pool deck but that's my own fault. I didn't spend any time on that side of the deck. Short of eliminating smoking all together on the ship, I think that the smokers have a variety of areas where they may still smoke and those of us who don't like the smell, have enough areas to go to avoid the smoke. I feel it a very fair policy. Can the casino be easily avoided when going from point A to point B on the ship? I know that on some of the Carnival ships, the casino spans the width of the ship, so unless you walk up (or down a flight) and then reverse, you cannot avoid walking through the casino. The Casino's on the grands are between the atrium and the theater on either the Promenade deck or the deck below. You can access the theater from either deck, and also use the starboard promenade to avoid smoke. So yes, there no need to walk through the casino. That said its sometimes the most convenient path from where you are, to where you want to go.
Pam in CA Posted February 1, 2012 #33 Share Posted February 1, 2012 Absolutley. Seems that many enjoy the confrontation and thrive on it. So much anger. It's not anger. I get very sick from smoke so it does affect me negatively. It's not fair for someone to flaunt the rules and deliberately make me sick. Before the change, there was little I could do except keep my door closed and not go outside. Now, I should be able to enjoy my balcony. That's not anger; that's getting what I paid for. I have an equal right to enjoy my balcony now.

Their smoking policies are one of the reasons I prefer to book now with Celebrity and Princess. If someone smokes on the balcony next to me and the smoke bothers me, since Princess now advertises smoke free balconies I don't see why I should not be annoyed or even angry. And why would I keep that to myself on the ship? Of course I would ask Princess crew on the ship to enforce their policy. roe2ship Posted February 1, 2012 #35 Share Posted February 1, 2012 Simple. If the smoking on a balcony next door bothers me I will call guest services. If it does not bother me I won't call them. Same as other problems on a ship. As far as the person that is concerned about putting people in a bad situation. If they violate the policy they have put themselves in a potentialy bad situation. I agree with you it is a simple matter whether or not someone chooses to report it or not. The difficult task will be is how the cruise line will deal with the issue once it is reported. Of course guest services will look into the situation (or shall I say claim they will or did) and may issue a warning to the offender if they feel it was appropriate or not. Will this stop the smoker….maybe or maybe not. We all know as you said yourself, there are other problems on ships too…rules/policies are in place yet are consistently broken. The full enforcement is just not there and the new smoking policy will probably be added to the list of issues the cruise lines have difficulty enforcing. golfb4cruzing Posted February 1, 2012 #36 Share Posted February 1, 2012 Unfortunately the first time someone gets charged the smoking penalty, I can see them removing their gratuities to offset. It's a no win situation because of the "Me" mentality of today's society. There is only one 100% solution, which no cruiseline wants to go down. Some may actually be ignorant of the rules and may not know. Not all are flaunting the rules and I don't think its fair that you label all that way. You may be void of anger but I sense some that may enjoy the negitive interaction, whether it be directly with a passenger or through staff. ;) I have stated my opinion and thats all I will say on the matter. So it appears that they will try & convince people that the electronic cigarettes are nothing to worry about & only then will they stop people from using them. Everywhere on the ship is acceptable except for the eating areas & main show lounge. It should prove an interesting concept to enforce.

You are so correct if a room steward turns someone in there go the graturities. Personally I think Carnival got it right. Time will tell and when it hits the bottom line I look for it to go unenforced. There is enough going on right now that is not helping the industry. I feel it a very fair policy. One reason I'll be checking deck plans to see where the casino and cigar bar is on a ship before booking a cabin. I remember some ship (the Island?) where you had to go through the casino on one deck to go back and forth. I definitely remember on the Island that Churchills (the cigar bar) was on the grand atrium and too many times the Promenade deck and the decks below that around the atrium would be filled with smoke. I prefer when both those locations are on a lower deck and at one end of the ship where you don't have to go by just to get around to other locations. Simple. If the smoking on a balcony next door bothers me I will call guest services. If it does not bother me I won't call them. Same as other problems on a ship. As far as the person that is concerned about putting people in a bad situation. If they violate the policy they have put themselves in a potentialy bad situation. Sp true. I imagine that there would be notices in the cabins and in the Patters about the new policy. I don't hesitate to tell someone to put out their cig or move if they come into an area where I am and then light up. Some people will realize they goofed up by not asking if it's okay. Every once in a while, you get someone who is a jerk (which is why there's a need for policies to get enacted). California has had no-smoking policies for a long time and I remember once some guy entering the area where we were sitting at a mall. He lit up (and there are signs that he obviously didn't see or ignored that advertise the prohibition) and I told him there's no smoking. He basically said make him stop. The people behind the counter got nervous because I was eying the pitcher of water near them (we were regulars at this place so they knew I was pregnant -- and if you know anything about a hormonal pregnant woman, you know not to cross them) and called security to explain to this guy, who was from another state, that he needed to leave. If that didn't happen, he would have gotten wet.;)

Personally I think Carnival got it right.Time will tell and when it hits the bottom line I look for it to go unenforced. There is enough going on right now that is not helping the industry. Not necessarily. Since their gratuities are pooled no matter how you select to give it to them, the amount of gratuity loss per occurrence would miniscule at most. If they also neglect to "turn in" violators they might also be gigged by their supervisor who constantly check up on their work and lose out other ways. All in all this appears to be a better solution for the cruise line profits but not without creating some problems areas for some places on the ships. Cruisin Kay D Posted February 2, 2012 #43 Share Posted February 2, 2012 Anyone know where specific smoking areas are on Coral (or Island if that's same)?? We wondered if it can be done on far aft end of Caribe deck?? Seems to me that smoking on those aft decks would be far less offensive to the joggers+ walkers on the Promenade deck!! yarlenna Posted February 3, 2012 #44 Share Posted February 3, 2012 So very easy...... I disagree with the new smoking policy and therefore cancelled 2 future cruises on Princess. Cruisin Kay D Posted February 4, 2012 #50 Share Posted February 4, 2012 YES, I have read the policy -- but I am wanting to know WHERE the places are on Coral (or Island) -- Mike has always been quite respectful smoking on our balcony away from the wind -- not smoking when neighbors are out on their balc -- putting it out properly in an ashtray enclosed-cup he brings with him -- really curious if smoking would be allowed on aft public open deck where he could not bother anyone???
