GradUT Posted January 30, 2012 #1 Share Posted January 30, 2012 I will be doing a 4-night cruise out of Galveston next month, my second cruise out of Galveston on Carnival. On the previous cruise, things were pretty casual and I expect it will be the same this time. I rather enjoy a casual atmosphere and on the previous cruise I wore a nice, but short, dress to elegant night. Last year I had to go to a formal event and wore this fabulous gown which I really love. I can't imagine when I will ever have a chance to wear it again, so I thought it might work for elegant night on this upcoming cruise. For those that have recently cruised out of Galveston on the Triumph, would I be obviously out-of-place in a formal gown? (BTW, I will be traveling with two of my sisters who will likely be in short, cocktail type dresses.) Please be honest. I have a perfectly fine short dress for elegant night if you think that's a better choice. I can always wear the gown at home when I'm vaccuuming! :D
marshhawk Posted January 30, 2012 #2 Share Posted January 30, 2012 Two years ago, I saw this very well dressed couple on elegant nioght, she was wearing a beautiful long pink evening gown, and she was the prettiest person on the ship-the question isn't whether you think it would be too dressy-but do you want to be the most gorgeious person on the ship? Go for it!
Baylee Posted January 30, 2012 #3 Share Posted January 30, 2012 I say go for it! I wanted to sew an elegant '50's style evening gown for our upcoming cruise ... just ran out of time. But, there's always next time!!
1948buddy Posted January 30, 2012 #4 Share Posted January 30, 2012 By all means , go for it, myself I love to see dressed up ladies on elegant night. It seems that it is getting more and more relaxed, but everyone can do what makes themselves feel good. Hope I see you..Have a great cruise! mondello Posted January 30, 2012 #6 Share Posted January 30, 2012 Go ahead and raise the bar. The rest of us knuckle dragging louts will mambo under it. Any beautiful dress or gown defines elegant better than anything else I can think of.
Gtownmom Posted January 30, 2012 #7 Share Posted January 30, 2012 Was on the Triumph earlier this month. Anything goes! Saw a few gowns and tuxes and they were so awesome looking! I also saw some folks that were dressed to the nines on non-elegant nights. They had the promenade photographers all to themselves! If you love it, wear it! Compliments will flow... 1948buddy Posted January 30, 2012 #8 Share Posted January 30, 2012 On the opposite end of the scale, I am amazed how many people show up on elegant night in jeans and a shirt. Why do they even post guidelines? I am not any kind of a fancy person, but on elegant night, I put on a suit and tie, and I like to show off my beautiful wife, then some guy shows up with a ball cap. Nothing wrong with that except he needs to go to the lido deck for dinner.

live2cruise2011 Posted January 30, 2012 #11 Share Posted January 30, 2012 Just do it. We will be on the triumph 2/18 and I bought a very nice formal gown and my husband and sons will be wearing white tail tuxes. It is about you and how you want to look not what others on the ship think!
NileQueen Posted January 30, 2012 #12 Share Posted January 30, 2012 Yes, WEAR IT, You will feel great. I always wear a sequined or beaded short or long dress on any length cruise. My husband always wears a tux. I feel great and the compliments keep flowing. Even passing officers compliment us. And we are in our 80's. WEAR IT and have the time of your life. MrPete Posted January 30, 2012 #13 Share Posted January 30, 2012 No such thing as too formal in a setting like that.
GradUT Posted January 30, 2012 Author #14 Share Posted January 30, 2012 OK, I think you have all convinced me to wear my gown. Thanks, and I know I will feel beautiful.
palmbaytish Posted January 30, 2012 #15 Share Posted January 30, 2012 I say go for it!!! I know I love seeing people dressed nicely. I am wearing a nice green taffeta dress and plan on having my hair syled in a nice Grace Kelly style and go for the retro glam look. I know in the past my mom has worn a number of formal dresses, like the one she wore when I was married. She figured it would be a great opportunity to wear a nice dress in another "formal" setting. It seems that so rearely these days do we have an opportunity to really dress up (at least in my small town). This is a picture of the dress I am wearing on one of our elegant nights (although with much different shoes...I hate the ones she has on!: I'd love to see pictures of what other dresses people will be wearing... cece9922 Posted January 30, 2012 #16 Share Posted January 30, 2012 I totally agree! Wear that dress!! I always make sure to bring pretty dresses because where else can you honestly wear them? It is a perfect excuse to look and feel amazing!!! ENJOY!!!!:)

Red State Sam Posted January 31, 2012 #18 Share Posted January 31, 2012 Wear it - and be sure to walk into the dining room with the attitude of "I cannot believe how uncouth you louts are."
MagSeven1413 Posted January 31, 2012 #19 Share Posted January 31, 2012 Personally, I don't think you can ever be 'overdressed' on elegant night. On the other hand...... Go ahead and be proud of yourself.
bbohbbneedacruise Posted January 31, 2012 #20 Share Posted January 31, 2012 My vote is wear it, LOL We were among the 25% dressed to the nines on our cruise.
asalligo Posted January 31, 2012 #21 Share Posted January 31, 2012 I am a big fan of elegant night and have only cruised Carnival, but would love a more enforced formal night. Are there any cruise lines that are more serious about this?
MissKIA Posted January 31, 2012 #22 Share Posted January 31, 2012 I'd love to see pictures of what other dresses people will be wearing... I love this dress. Gorgeous!
carncruiser1964 Posted January 31, 2012 #23 Share Posted January 31, 2012 Hubby and I LOVE to dress up, especially on elegant night. He actually just bought a tux and I got a new gown with a train for our upcoming Liberty cruise. Love, love, love dressing up. It makes us feel great. It's not that way with everyone, but I say wear the gown!!
palmbaytish Posted January 31, 2012 #24 Share Posted January 31, 2012 Thanks...It was a Black Friday impulse buy but the minute I saw it, I knew I had to have it. It was on sale and in my size, so I took it as a sign from God that I was meant to have it! :)
