Approach to San Juan

When we sailed the Zuiderdam to San Juan a few years ago, the captain opened up the front of the ship (deck 4? maybe 5?) during the approach to San Juan. It was such a wonderful view of El Morro. Does anyone know if they are still doing that? We are sailing Nieuw Amsterdam in a few weeks.

It depends on the weather.

Sometimes the bow has been open -- sometimes closed because of the winds and/or rain.

It was open on our January sailing this year. It was quite windy and you couldn't hear the narration well but it was fun to be out there!

We sailed into San Juan on the Nieuw Amsterdam in Nov 2010 and the captain provided access to the bow. Windy , but a nice sunny day, got some great images.

It was also open last time we went in - no matter where you are - this is an awesome sight - just find a spot you like and enjoy the view:) San Juan is one of our favourites sail in and sail out - along with Venice and that's saying a lot :D

If it's not open, just find a place on deck or on your veranda. The CD usually provides a nice narration of the sights.

Every time we have sailed into San Juan on nice days, the bow has been opened.

 

It is such a beautiful sight sailing in don't miss watching sailing in and out from San Juan.

Thanks for asking the question Maureen. Anyone have an idea how early to get to the bow if it is open?

No need to rush. It won't be packed like it is for Panama Canal transit, for example.

 

We actually enjoy the view from Lido if we are approaching near lunch time which is quite common for HAL itineraries.

 

If you wish to go to the bow, I'd suggest about 35 minutes or so prior to scheduled arrival.

The Captain made an announcement when they opened the bow, no need to get there ahead of time. There was plenty of room at the railing on our sailing. Be advised that there was quite a large (maybe 2ft) step up and down to get out to the bow and there was very limited seating.

Don't count on having any seating at the bow.

Most of us who go to the bow for views, stand along the edges.
