1 p.m. to 8 p.m. in San Juan

Looking for ideas on how to spend this timeframe in San Juan. We thought we would do an on-your-own type tour, but thought I'd seek all of the expert advice on the board. This is kind of a strange timeframe IMHO as I always prefer mornings on shore with late afternoons relaxing on board. Suggestions or experiences to share?

I agree (I have to agree with a another Maureen!) that it's a strange timeframe. We are scheduled for 12-8 on Maasdam so will have another hour in the afternoon to walk around a bit. At least we should have a lovely sail in. :) m--

Walk the old city. El Morro the old fort, walk back along the sea wall, the cathedral, Ponce de Leon's grave, the sailors chapel, the casino, the shops, the food, I'm not sure the time in port is enough to see everything. We've been back four times and have another cruise schedule next year.;)

We took the free trolley up to El Morro, toured the fort and walked through the pretty streets, ending up back at the ship. Did stop in at Barrachina`s for a pina colada - wow they did not skimp on the alcohol!:D

Both DH & I agreed, we should have taken a guided walking tour or cab tour to start off - it would have been nice to know a little info on some of the buildings & sites we passed. Just a thought.

I really hate it when we arrive in San Juan in the afternoon. We like to do our walking (even though I can't do much of that anynore) in the morning when it is cooler.

Do check into the trolley -- you can get in front of the ferry terminal -- not certain what time they stop running for the day.

Thats a good idea as the fort is much higher then the port, that way you get to walk downhill back to the ship. We will be in SJ in a few weeks and will be going to the rain forest for the first time.

I love the 1 P.M. arrivals in San Juan as we enjoy the morning on the ship. Watch as we sail in......a beautiful sight. Then we walk, shop, enjoy Old San Juan again as it's one of our favorite ports. Then we get either a late lunch or early dinner. I'd hate to leave San Juan without enjoying a good Latin meal. :) We think the food there so good.

Sail7Seas has it just right, two posts above. We were there last week, from 1-11pm, which allowed for even later dining in port. We did our own walking tour of both forts and the downtown. Very doable. We ate dinner back on the ship, however, and took great night-time photos form our balcony. Our favorite stop on our cruise.
