Which building are worth touring inside in Tallinn?

Recommended Posts

We are planning a walking tour of Old Town Tallinn but the more I read, the more I realize that kids might like exploring inside some of the building or climbing some of the towers. My kids are ages 10 -17 (boys and girls). I know we can't do it all but what would be the top two or three to explore inside or climb? If I don't have them planned out, I doubt we would make the most of the short day (7 to 4 on a Thursday).

I do see the KGM museum and I am interested in that. Is that appropriate for kids?

Tallinn is very interesting with lots of charm. Not sure what works for your kids. There are a couple of major church to see as you walk down from on top of the hill. Lots of shops in the lower area. Great architecture here. Below are a few of my photo samples to maybe give you an idea or two.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Did a June 7-19, 2011, Solstice cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik. Enjoyed great weather and a wonderful trip. At the top of Tallinn’s Toompea hill, this shows part of the Estonia Parliament building in the historic Pink Baroque Palace and the old Pikk Hermann watchtower with their flag on top:

Here are outside and inside views of Tallinn’s Alexander Nevsky Cathedral built in the Orthodox style 1894–1900. This church crowns the hill of Toompea. The church has been meticulously restored since Estonia regained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.:

Inside of Tallinn’s historic St. Mary's Cathedral Lutheran church with parts of the building dating back to the 12th Century. The main church was built in the 14th Century:

Shopping is great in Tallinn. Here we are inside a nice linen shop near the City Hall.:

One I would highly recommend for teens is the town hall tower. It is a somewhat tight climb up something like 225 step, very "sketchy" as my teenager daughter said but she loved it.

1. Epping Tower: interactive displays including armor & medieval arms. Kids can try on replica chain mail, etc. IMHO, this one would be most interesting to kids, especially your 10 yr old. :)

2. Kiek in de Kok : (our favorite) massive cannon tower has some very interesting displays that show development of city walls/towers. Includes crime & punishment in ancient Tallinn (w/medieval torture devices), medieval dress, etc. The tower also serves as the entrance to the Bastion tunnels.

3. Town Hall Tower - great views from tower

4. St. Olav's Church & Tower - great views from tower
