22 Passengers Robbed On Excursion...

There are several threads about this incident already.

I don't think this is any different from watching tv and seeing a purse snatching at a mall or a bank robbery.

It does not stop me from going to the mall or going to my bank.

With all due respect, I think that a purse snatching in a mall is different than being robbed at gunpoint by masked men in a foreign country.....just sayin'

A better analogy would be watching TV and seeing that there have recently been several robberies and quite a few murders at a nearby bank, yet you choose to continue frequenting that same bank. I applaud your bravery.

To the current topic, I would not expose my family to the unnecessary risk of visiting many of the central American countries given the current violent climate. When things calm down in Mexico and the government manages to regain real control, I will gladly go back to visit--it is an amazing country with wonderful people.

I'm sure that some people would argue with me and claim that the incidents are isolated, or mostly directed at others (other drug cartels, that is). This may be true, but even if not a target, many innocent people in the region have become casualties of recent crime and violence. My family will not be on that list.

Here is a link to what our local news are reporting here in So. Cal. It has an interview with a passenger who was involved in the robbery and then they proceed to talk about what cruiselines need to do to keep us safe while traveling on their ship sponsered excursions.

People get robbed in Las Vegas, Orlando, Myrtle Beach. Why is this news worthy? Crime happens everywhere, with or without guns.

Crime is more prevalent in some areas than in others. Would you seek out those areas with high levels of crime?

I lived in Vegas for over twenty years and moved away just 6 years ago. I still have family and friends there. I can not recall one time that I have heard of a tour bus being boarded by masked armed men and robbing the tourist. If you know of any of these please let me know.

I was just in Vegas in Septemeber and did not see one robbery or any real bad issues. Of course, all of our cities have crime and we all know what areas of town to avoid, but to say that this crime is the same as crime in some of cities is just crazy!! I can't recall the last time I read a national story of people jumping aboard a tourist bus and robbing everyone on board and also threatening their lives. If this happened in this country we wouldn't have tourist come here.

Thank-You! Same goes for Orlando or Myrtle Beach!

It does happen in this country, it happened earlier this month:

If you want to find out more, google bus hijackings in the US, there are more, and as mikehn said, crime happens everywhere.

Your "earlier this month" was posted Feb 4th 2011. Also if you can't see the difference, not sure how I or anyone else can explain it to you. Not saying this wasn't bad but there is a difference between armed robbery and mental Illness. Just saying

Crime does happen everywhere, but crime happens more often in certain areas and less often in certain areas. Common sense would tell you to stay away from high crime areas. I live in a very safe area. If my 9 pound dog needed to go for a walk at 2 am i would have no aprehension about taking her for a walk. Does not make any sense to me to put yourself in dangerous situations

NOBODY jumped on a tour bus there and robbed it. It was a single gunman that robbed them on a trail. This is what the people who were robbed are now reporting.

I suppose you never heard of anybody being mugged in Vegas?

You surely must know of the shootings that have happened in recent years in different Vegas casinos such as NY NY and Caesars.

Be scared of Mexico if you want to, but don't be naive about other places.

Gosh, I'm human and made a mistake, still never know what year I'm in until about June,:p but I was responding to a post that said bus hijackings do not happen in the US, but they do indeed.

And as has been told by the news agency's this morning, the bus wasn't hijacked.

This makes it worse! People walking around on a tour and a gunman robbed them?? (on a side note...22 people couldn't take down one man??) I'd like to think the bus driver COULD HAVE sped up, driven past the gunman, etc. But a group of people making their way to a zipline tour and someone just jumps out at them??

Not scary, exciting really. Were else can you go on vacation, get robbed. See rocks up close, Captains tripping into lifeboats, fires, virus attacks and crew and passengers jumping overboard. Sure I forgot others.

You should write a brochure for Carnival. Your post makes me want to book a cruise right away. LOL

Think what you like , just know going in that you put the lives of your family in danger when you travel to the Western side.If you have already booked just stay on the ship .Be safe it's really not worth getting hurt or robbed over

Using your logic, you should not get off the ship in Nassau, Jamaica, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Thomas, or San Juan.

An individual may unfortunately get robbed here and there..but I have never, ever read of a tour bus full of people in those cities stated above being boarded and robbed at gunpoint. not likely to happen...unless the tour driver is in on it....so it is news worthy..because many travelers assume they are safe on a guided excursion..and that is not necessarity the case...so better to be informed and aware
