btw - FB roll calls were only there until 2012 the last time I looked - doesn't do someone much good with a 2013 cruise and ports that need planning - or people to connect to:eek:

Are families losing the ability to sit in the same room and have a conversation? Is it only possible to communite through a social medium on the internet. When a family member dies, they have to announce it to the cousins, brothers, sisters etc on FACEBOOK?

I don't 'get it'.

Will the younger generation know how to communicate live and in person at a job interview, a party, a date, a reunion etc?

Kind of hard to sit in the same room and communicate when some family members live in different states and some on different continents. I am not young by any means and I enjoy it. Maybe some of the older people and some younger ones dont and that is your choice. It is also our choice to choose to use FB ;)

Considering that you have over 45,000 posts on an Internet message board, are you in the position to judge families who use social media to catch up or talk to each other? I have kids away in college, kids in high school, 6 cousins on the west coast, a DH who is 438 miles away for the summer, etc etc. It is not possible to get together in the same room and talk right now.

Instead of worrying about whether the younger generation can sit through a job interview, do you ever think that maybe you spend more time chatting online than they do?

and I also bet there were plenty of people that said "what is the world coming to now days. People cant even write a letter or walk over and talk to the neighbor. They pick up that damn phone off the wall and call them"

I saw a news story about a month ago about courses you can enroll your kid in to teach the kid how to communicate in person. Some kids are seriously deficient in basic social skills because all they do is text, they never talk to friends.

How pathetic is that?!?!?

That is 'part of' my point. :D

Not judging....... but noticing.

I no longer work outside my house. I have lots of free time now. :)

When I was in school and working etc, I didn't have this amount of free time.

Is it bad to notice what goes around us and comment about it? Here, there or anywhere?

LOL........ good point. :D

I know there are many who posts what they had for dinner and show a photo of the plate but when will they get tired of that?
People do that here as well & there are a lot of people who love that "food porn."
If data mining is a concern then you probably should be aware that any "free" site including CC uses data mining. That's how they determine what ads to display while you are on this site and beyond.
This makes complete sense, I see cruise ads ALL OVER THE PLACE!:o

Well sure I'm very close to my relatives who live near me. I'm the youngest of 8 kids and 5 of us own homes in the same town we were raised in, so I see my siblings very often.

But, it's my nieces and nephews who live all over the country and some out of the country that I keep in touch with on an almost daily basis on FB.

I have a niece with a husband and 3 children living in Dubai...it's quite expensive to phone that country...FB is free.

I have another niece with a husband and a daughter living in Scotland.

I feel like I've seen their children grow up even though we only get to see them in person once or twice a year.

That's the main reason I'm on FB. I'm not there to try and connect with people from high school. I have an account on FB to keep in touch with relatives who live far away.

I love facebook! I only add people I know in real life. I did add some high school friends at first, but I also unfriended some because, just like in high school, I wasn't interested in what they had to say. ::shrug:: I use my privacy settings judiciously. You can only see my stuff if I add you. I find my friends funny and amusing, and I enjoy seeing what they post. I keep up with my cousins and their kids who are all scattered in various states and countries. I find facebook highly useful for that. I stalk my own kids to make certain they (the teenagers) are following the rules about facebook and to see what my adult children are posting. (It can be enlightening.)

But I never thought about using it as a replacement for CC. I like my anonymity here. If we hit it off with people from our roll call (as has happened in the past) THEN I give them email and facebook contacts, not before.

When I click to reply, I have an application that prevents this site from tracking me:

The application is called "Ghostery" and prevented two sites from tracking this post.

Every computer has an IP Address.
If you google "Track my IP" you will be told where you are located.. and every site you visit online will know what you are interested in by following your IP

I use a program called CCleaner (it's a free download) that removes cookies and stuff to speed up and safeguard your computer. I have used it for years.

I use a program called "Rapport" that automatically checks every website I visit and it double protects my banking chores (It was a download from my bank).

For those of us who have a lot of time on our hands, there are many ways to waste our time. I find both CC and facebook a wonderful time waster but I find facebook a nicer way to stay in touch with friends.

CC seems to be a "shotgun" approach to connecting with people who have similar interests whereas facebook, when used carefully, can be a more precise and friendlier way to contact others. You don't have to pick and choose from new threads, you just let it happen as the mood strikes you.
Was talked into joining FB by a friend. Now I regret it. Have tried to cancel my account but have been unsuccessful & the FB Help line is useless. I am not the least bit interested in who is thinking whatever! I never go there even if I received a notice that a friend has posted something - like, who friggin cares!!!
Gail,
We have booked an Alaskan Cruise and will end up in Vancouver. I got some information from Cruise Critic and copied it. We have been to Vancouver before but not to Grosse Mountain and were planning on using these instructions. I wonder if you would be so kind as to comment on the instructions as to if they seem good to you?

CRUISE CRITIC ON VANCOUVER

Copied from Cruise Critic.
I would recommend Grouse Mtn and Capilano Suspension Bridge as must sees and they can be done very easily via public transit. Buy an all day pass for $9 and take a bus to the Waterfront station - there transfer to the SeaBus for the ride accross the harbour to North Vancouver. You will dock at the Lonsdale Quay Public Market. Walk thru the market and exit at the north end where the buses are there take the Capilano Road bus and ask the driver to tell you when to get off for the Capilano Suspension Bridge. Enjoy the Bridge, Tree Top Walk, Nature Trails, Gardens and Trading Post then reboard another Capilano Road bus still going up the hill. The end of this bus route is the bottom station for the air tram up Grouse Mountain. Once up the mountain you will enjoy several hours of fun. There is also a good restuarnt and cafe for lunch or dinner. When finished just reboard the Capilano Road Bus and ride it back to Londale Quay then the SeaBus back to Waterfront Station...Once back at Watherfront station when you exit the station turn left and you are at the entrance to Gas Town Vancouver's historic downtown district which is full of shops and restaurants.

At the start of Gas Town is the Harbor Centre Tower www.vancouverlookout.com a great spot to start your tour of Vancouver with a birds eye view of the city. Either take the elevator up to the lookout level or go to the top and enjoy a meal in the revolving restaurant.

Grouse Mountain Skyride
Capilano Suspension Bridge
the Olympic Cauldron
Robson Street

I removed Gastown and Granville island which we have seen before.
Thanks.
