Lizzie1213 Posted April 25, 2012 #1 Share Posted April 25, 2012 My daughter's 18th birthday is Feb 15. Her passport expires Feb 20. We plan to take a cruise the first week of March. Normally, I would just renew her passport a few months in advance. Since she will be a legal adult by the time we cruise, would she still be allowed to travel on a minor's passport? Should she just use her birth certificate and driver's liscence. I am a little uncomfortable with the thought of her leaving the country without a passport though. I could not find an answer on the state dept's site, and i thought i would try here first before calling to see if anyone had experience with this situation. Boytjie Posted April 25, 2012 #2 Share Posted April 25, 2012 One can apply for an adult passport after the age of 16, so I don't see an issue.
Hawaiidan Posted April 25, 2012 #3 Share Posted April 25, 2012 Get the 10 year window. Passports are the new standard for travel and will only be more so in the years to come. Don't wait till FEB. at 16 she can apply for the adult:D

KirkNC Posted April 25, 2012 #5 Share Posted April 25, 2012 Are you talking about next year? I assume so, yes, go ahead and get her an adult passport now.

Himself Posted April 25, 2012 #7 Share Posted April 25, 2012 agree -- renew her passport now. Amen! This is very sound advice. Right now one must complete one's travel by sea three months before the passport expires.
Typhoon1 Posted April 25, 2012 #8 Share Posted April 25, 2012 Apply now. A relative just renewed and reported a two week turnaround.

Lizzie1213 Posted April 27, 2012 Author #10 Share Posted April 27, 2012 Thank you so much. I didn't realize one could apply for an adult passport at 16...so we don't have a problem at all! I will apply for a new passport at once.
