GAMBLING ABOARD CARNIVAL SHIPS

Despite many e-mails and letters to Carnival Cruise Lines since our cruise aboard the Inspiration in October, I have received no satisfactory response to the following inquiry. “What is your policy regarding the horse racing game aboard ship?” The situation prompting the inquiry was the “pretend” horse race where passengers hop around the show room on wooden horses according to the roll of the dice. At $3 per bet, I’m estimating that well over $150 in wagers were placed, and in return the only single one ticket winner received $12. No explanation given to the general crowd mumbling response of “what the hell . . . ?” At this point, to the staff at least, this “game” became gambling and a way for Carnival to make money. No one had any explanation for how the money was to be distributed, including the Cruise director, the Purser, or the ships accountant, further stating that “if they did they wouldn’t tell me because it wasn’t any of my business.” I have received one generic response of no value and one general outline of how pari-mutual betting governs the game. No definition of pari-mutual gambling I am aware of allows the fleecing of participants as was done by Carnival. Gamblers beware of all ship board “games” aboard Carnival ships and take note of the sign at the casino entrance that allows them to reset all jackpots between each cruise. E-mail me as you see fit for further explanation.

I've never seen a sign at the casino entrance saying they can "reset all jackpots." You may not be aware that slot machines are controlled by RANDOM number generators, which simply pay back a predetermined percentage. It doesn't matter if a jackpot has been hit in the last minute or five years ago. The cruise line does not determine when a jackpot will be hit. I'm trying to figure out the actual intent of your post and don't get it, but will say that bingo is a good money maker for the cruise lines.

Slot machines are irrelevant to my post. My point being that less than 10% of the money wagered in a "game" was returned to the game participants. If everyone knew the single one sole winner was going to get a $9 return for a $3 bet even if they were the only person in the room to get it right, would bother to play. I understand how slot machines work, I'm speaking of the table games like Caribbean Stud where the jackpot accumulates according to participants. Gambling rules on the open seas are not what they are in regulated areas and Carnival seems to be worse than most.

While off topic from the OP, I have read the notice in the Casino that they reserve the right to reset the progressive jackpot on slots/video poker between cruises. That said, twice I have come on board and seen very large payouts for a video poker royal flush carried over from the previous cruise and not reset. It didn't get reset until it got won the last night of our cruise (it wasn't me).

In other words, they have the right to reset a progressive jackpot, but from what I have seen, they do not.

Getting back to the original posters point, all games of chance outside the casino have no posted payout percentage. I'm sure they make a ton on bingo, horse racing and those scratch offs lottery tickets. It entertainment mostly and not a good bet. Stick to the casono if you want good odds.
