Automatic Tips?

hihello

Recommended Posts

ICan you tell them not to charge you for tips and that you will tip the people yourself? Can you select a cheaper tip?

I know tipping is important and I am not trying to get out of tipping, but am just wondering how this works with Carnival?

Thanks! :)

if you eat at the buffet and the dining room and your room is cleaned those tips will take care of those people.

if you take anytime dining and do not ever set foot in the dining room those tips will me moved to the service people that take care of the buffet.

You are tipping the cabin steward 3.50 a day per person. this person takes care of your room twice a day.

Yes, you can go to the guest services and tell them what you want to pay.

personally- i leave them alone- I prepay before i go. And if the people go over and above i tip extra in cash

First, thanks for actually answering the OP question. I also have a question for you. I don't think we are going to pre pay our tips but I'm wondering what would happen to those funds should you not get to go on your cruise?

We book our cruises with our Carnival PVP. He just rolls the gratuitites in with the balance of the cruise. I am not 100% sure, but would think since it actually increases the balance of the cruise, that it would have the same refund rules as the actual cruise. We pay-off our cruise in monthly installments and it's really nice to know that when we finally do board the ship that this is one charge that we will not have to budget for on our S&S.

Yes, but by removing them you are stiffing many others who receive a portion of those tips. The automatic tips do not go to just your room steward and dinner waiters. They are also distributed amoung the guys cleaning up after you on the pool deck, making sure the chairs are clean etc.

Leave the tips on and tip more if appropriate.

So should we assume that the the people who we don't see and the people we are tipping "behind the scenes" are not salaried workers?? I mean all this talk about 'STIFFING" the staff. Do they solely work on tips? <~~(the behind the scenes people?)

When I go to a restaurant I don't tip everyone working just those who serve me. It is the cruise line responsibility to pay those in other areas such as entertainment and other areas, I will not tip someone who is being paid a salary for their job. I have no problem tipping my wait staff nightly and tipping my room stewards nightly as well. But as I said I wont and don't tip any behind the scenes people. And if you want to call me cheap or say I stiff someone that's fine! I will be more than happy if to pay them if you would like to pay my 1200 + s&s bill plus my 1400 cruise fair and all the 100's and I do mean PLENTY of them I spend in the casino....

I have removed tips during a cruise on the triumph where I has several problems!! And I will continue to remove them and tip as i want when i want. Until tipping is an actual serve fee i will continue to remove the tips an if I receive less the the expected service from the staff due to the removal of my tips I wont tip them at all! If carnival employees want the gratuities then they have to earn them just like any other tipped person in the US. if I have a crappy waiter or waitress, or if I am unhappy for a haircut or nail job NO WAY will I tip them due to the fact that I wasn't satisfied with the service I HAVE ALREADY PAID FOR! period! Let the flames begin!!!!

The "suggested" tips are a bargain...if you were to eat in restaurants 3 times daily, and tip the housekeeper at your hotel (you do that, don't you???? You're supposed to!!!), you would tip MUCH more than what the ship suggests you should tip.

Just leave the tips as they are, and be done with it....you'll be doing the right thing.

With all the KNOWN facts of most hotels not washing the comforters and duvets on the bed and then finding several things in my room that was left from previous guests left under the bed or in drawers, NO i don't tip people who half a$$ their job. I have found things in my hotel room as well as my cruise cabin left from previous passengers so apparently they haven't done their job well enough to receive a tip. A previous cruiser found an adult toy which didn't belong to her sitting right next to her bed after one room steward cleaned up and it wasn't even hers!!

It was probably from the previous cruiser or maybe even a few before them! So tell me why??? We would tip the housekeeping after a hotel stay when that is their JOB! Let me ask you this, do u tip the person who changes ur oil at the local oil change shop? Do you tip the bagger at the grocery store? Do you tip the clerk at the local gas station? Do you tip the person who comes in and cleans your brand new house after construction b4 you move in? NO CAUSE YOU NEVER SEE HER.

Give me a break!! Tipping is personal preference due to the quality of service provided to that particular person!

When I go to a restaurant I don't tip everyone working just those who serve me.

FYI- many times and most places where you eat off the cruise ship, the tips are in fact shared between your waitperson, the bar staff, cooks and other restaurant workers. Just because you left that tip for your waiter doesn't mean they get it all... my niece used to work at a high-end restaurant and she would 'collect' an average of $300 per night in tips, but would actually take home $100-$200 of that money.

I only tip my wait person, who that person splits their tips with is their business!

Not mine nor my responsibility. I don't expect someone to tip me at my job if I didn't actually provide service to that specific person! Sorry.

and her taking home 200 a night is a lot more than some make in a week so i think that's a fair amount.

My ex-husband works extremely hard as a city employee making sure people such as yourself and I get exceptional garbage/recycle and compost removal, but never expects anything in return but his paycheck from the person he is actually employed thru. So the expectation of tipping someone who NONE OF US EVEN know where the extra 2.00 tip goes to is BOLOGNA!

I really do not consider this a tip but a surcharge. I wish CCL would just add it to the fare price. I always pay it even for children. Your name does go (as a previous poster said) on a list in crew quarters if you remove your tips and you may not recieve adequate service.

When it becomes a surcharge then I will have no other choice than to pay it. But until then if I receive less than expected service for removing auto tips then they can forget about the cash I tip nightly as well. That is just the way I feel.

NCL now calls it a service charge and has made it so difficult to remove my UK TA I use now makes us sign a disclaimer that we know tips will be added to some cruises once onboard, because in the UK everything has to be included in the price. His prices always include the add on taxes and fees, US TAs add on.

Its the direction cruiselines are heading.

on a ship the money goes to where it is supposed to go- so if you get a waiter-- that money goes directly to him/her.

they do not pool their money.

You're missing the point. Most restaurants make the servers share these tips. It is not their chioice.

As I mentioned earlier, Most of the service staff on a ship probably makes less than $100/week. Entertainers, Cruise Directors, dancers etc make a reasonable salary. Not the wait staff.

Here is the break down of how the tips are paid out.

Service

Per Guest, Per Day

Dining Room Services

$5.80

Stateroom Services

$3.70

Alternative Services: distributed to kitchen, entertainment, guest services and other hotel staff members.

$2.00

Total Gratuities

$11.50

Our last Maitre D did help relocate a couple sitting with us who spoke no English (only Russian). This was a big help to us obviously. Fortunately this time we are traveling with 4 other people.

To those who think tips are meant to be voluntary and putting them on your account is only meant to help .. its a service charge .. proof that Carnival is moving that direction. I just read this post .. aimed at those countries who dont tip much.

I just priced up a cruise on the Breeze and when I got to the end I read this:

Certain nationalities have to PRE-PAY gratuities. If your nationality is listed, you must ADD gratuities onto your booking cost. This is mandatory for the following nationalities: Argentina, Australia, Bahrain, Bolivia, Brazil, Belize, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Spain, Guatemala, Honduras, Haiti, Italy, Malta, Mexico, Nicaragua, Netherlands, New Zealand, Panama, Peru, Paraguay, Sweden, El Salvador, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

It doesn't make any difference to me as we are in the UK and always Pre pay anyway but I'm really quite shocked by it. Is this a new policy or has it always been like this?

Most of us know that those who remove tips are just cheap .. cant change people who are cheap by nature and dont mind stiffing others to save a buck.

australians dont think tipping is appropriate, so Carnival ADDS IT TO THE PRICE. Tips are included in cruises from Australia, they add them in front end.

Okay now here is a break down for you.

Dining room service Tip ~ $10.00pp a day.

MORE THAN AUTO TIPS

Room Steward Team Tip Left for them while out the room during turn down service tip~ 20.00 First night. $10.00 per additional; nights of cruise night.

MORE THAN AUTO TIPS

I like to SHOW gratitude to the room stewards and dining team in cash in person. Now don't get me wrong if service is not as expected I will adjust that amount as per anyone would didn't receive the service that was supposed to provided.

This is a preference I choose to make because it is optional. I feel I pay the people who serve and take care of me. When I go to the nail shop I pay my nail not the one who vacuums and cleans up at night.

Also lets do the math you say most of the service staff makes less than 100.00 per week? How do you come to this conclusion? Have you actually seen a paycheck stub or any actual proof of this besides what you have be "told". Based on posted suggested grats dining room is 5.80 PP per day.

Most and I know not all but most people travel in groups of at least 2 if not more. so if the wait staff has a total of 7 tables say 2 with 2 people and 3 with 4 people and 2 more a 6 topper, that's a total of 28 people in all(<~~~~ Okay I know sounds like a 3rd grade world problem in ,math but I am trying to make a point to those who think I am a cheap person or trying to screw someone out of their money.) Coming to a total of 162.40 per day, So on a 7 day cruise the tips just for dining room staff comes to 1136.80. Now say some people remove auto grats such as I have done, they may make a little less than the auto or MAYBE JUST MAYBE such in my case I tip over BELIEVE IT OR NOT, So they actually make a little more.

You also stated that entertainment and etc make a reasonable salary, well please do share why they are included in the $2.00 additional services grat?

Sorry to be rude but tyes it is their choice because the same as the Carnival staff they choose to work in the service profession.

Sorry you feel this way I never stiff that staff.

I'm just wondering do you buy beverages from the waiters who walk about with trays of drinks at the shows, on the lido deck, at dinner or in the casino??

If not who says ur not stiffing them? They also need their 15%!

This is actually discriminatory and until Carnival does make it a service charge something should be done about discrimination again specific nationalities. And call me whatever you want. Let me ask, Ar you on of the ones who don't drink and only spend a total of 50.00 tops UNLESS you have earned some sort of OBC. If so maybe you should call yourself CHEAP or Maybe your stiffing carnival for not spending what THEY EXPECT you to on bar purchases or in the shops or services onboad. m

We experienced this last November due to a serious family illness. Carnival refunded our Bon Voyage charges, our port fees and taxes as well as our prepaid gratuities. Our third party travel insurance reimbursed our cruise fare.:)

Dear Cruise Gods,

Please don't ever let me be in a roll call with, or sat at a table in the MDR with this person. They sound like the type that would be talking about how much they spent on the cruise fare etc and would also be telling everybody that they really should take the tips off.

Thanks!

I don't know what's more ridiculous, your statement about me or the fact you have a "cruise god".

I could care less who pays in cash and who keeps their tips on. I clearly stated my opinion of why I remove mine and pay in cash.

Really it just shows how ignorant you to have made such a statement without knowing anything about me. :)

Ur opinion means nothing to me.

How can you have any idea what kind of person I am just because I stated I remove auto tips?

I'm pretty sure your a little judgmental!

Here's my two cents :) I usually just keep my auto tips on out of convenience, unless there's some reason to adjust up or down (only been done 1 or 2 times in 20+ cruises). BUT I must share that my ex-husband and SEVERAL of our friends worked on cruise ships and they much prefer CASH tips! They are not allowed to say this to passengers though.
