Valor (out of San Juan) versus Glory (out of Miami)

A little background: My husband and I are looking at a Southern/Eastern Caribbean cruise for our 10th anniversary. We are in our mid-30's and it is will be my husband's first cruise and only my second (other was a Carnival, too).

We are looking at the April sailings out of San Juan on the Valor or out of Miami on the Glory. Anyone here done either of these or have any recommendations? We have not taken a vacation with just the two of us since our honeymoon!!!

Thanks for your help!

Hey, San Juan on the Valor....that's my cruise! Can't WAIT! Already done the Eastern out of Miami (three different trips to three different routes). It's a good one but REALLY looking forward to this one, March 31st. It really is the only way to see so much of the Virgin Islands and S. Carribean all in one trip. I say go for that one.

Thanks for the thoughts! Price is pretty much the same for both cruises, including air. Just looking at the difference between the two ships and which may be the better fit for dh and I! I do love the itinerary out of San Juan so I am leaning that way!

The Valor and the Glory are in the same ship class, so they will be basically the same, other than the Glory is being updated with 2.0 upgrades..don't know when Valor will be upgraded..anyone know? I am thinking of doing the Valor next May.

We sailed the same basic itenerary last summer on the Serenade of the Seas. While we LOVED the itenerary, we missed being on the ship. It is VERY port intensive and we found that we were exhausted every night. We basically went to dinner and then to bed..didn't see many shows etc.

What it comes down to is what kind of experience you are looking for..if you like sea days and experiencing the ship, I would go with a different itenerary. If you dont really care so much about the activites on the ship and want to sail for the ports, then do the San Juan cruise..

By the way, we loved San Juan also.. If you go with the Valor, I would try to arrive a day or two early so that you can experience San Juan..it is wonderful!

Glory will be updated to 2.0.

my dilemma was the same as the OP but I wanted to book the one way out of Miami and arriving to San Juan for the repositioning.

Glory being updated in November is what made me look twice at that one.

(airfare for both was about the same)

We are doing this cruise in Feb and are so excited about it. You may want to check airfare, as cost might be a factor for you. Airfare is extremely high from Ohio/Michigan to San Juan. We were able to get ours for $500.00 per person, however our daughter hasn't got hers yet and it's running $650.00 on up.........We were on the Glory 2 yrs ago and it's also very nice.

My DW and I are both in our early 50's and have done both cruises. By far and away our favorite is the cruise out of San Juan. The ports on this cruise are some of the best in the Carribbean. If you can squeeze in extra time in San Juan it is great we stayed is Isle Verde and it was great. We stayed at the El San Juan Hotel and Casino. Watch the Web site and you can get a good deal but you need to check every day. We took a tour to the rainforest and to the bio-bay in Fajardo it was awesome.

  • 1 year later...

Did Valor last year. Doing Glory next week. Looking at the itineraries, I'd say you see one more port and spend much more time at each on Valor.

Price about even, slightly higher flight costs to San Juan. Spend another day or two in San Juan and enjoy the area.

I left out of San Juan & loved having the extra time in Puerto Rico. (We arrive a day early & take a late flight home.)

We liked walking around Old San Juan including but not limited to the forts & we really enjoyed the rain forest too.

OOPs missed the date on the original post.

Was on the Valor last spring and WOW..what an itinerary. St. Lucia was unbelievable..felt more like a south pacific island. The Grand Pitons are gorgeous. St. Kitts was wonderful too. Swam with sea turtles in Barbados..and St. Thomas and St. Marten also lovely. Best itinerary in my opinion.

We loved the Valor..great crew and staff.

I loved saily out of San Juan. The ship docks right up against the harbor street. You can get on and off all day as it leaves at 10 pm at night. There's a CVS about a block down where you can get water or soda or other things you might need as they stock a lot of things there.

No matter which ship you choose, have fun!:)
