Beaches at Safaga

There are beaches at Hurghada which is near Safaga. I know the ship offered an excursion to a beach, but we didn't take it This is taken from Cruisecritic ports of call - The town, about 1.5 miles from the port (cabs are rarely available unless you arrange them in advance) is a dusty, rough-and-tumble kind of place with a few unimpressive shops and banks and not much else. It's not a charming place. North of town is a beach strip, with clean beaches and moderately priced hotels that attract tourists -- many from Germany -- with their diving and windsurfing centers.

Hi Mark - we are on the same cruise as you. We have visited Luxor before so don't want to go there. Judging by research there is not a lot to do in and around Safaga and the excursions don't really appeal if you don't want Luxor. Celebrity are doing a transfer to Hurghada for about $25 which we will probably do for one day. What we like do do is to find a hotel we can go to on a day ticket if anyone know of one - been told that there are some nice ones in Soma Bay which I believe is quite near. Struggling a bit with this port.

You may have to do some hunting on your own, too. Go to your favorite hotel review website. Plug in Safaga, Hurghada, Soma Bay or any other spot nearby. See what hotels pop up. Take a little time to email the resorts and ask if they do a day use. You might get lucky. If not, opt for the tour, either the ship's tour or maybe one put together by your roll call.

Safaga has fine black sand public beaches and private resorts, Safaga is among Egypt's most important health resorts, the black sand is good for the treatment of many skin illnesses also the air quality in Safaga is very high because it is surrounded by mountains

Hurghada, about 1 hour taxi ride from Safaga, is very popular with Russian and German tourists

If you're looking to dive in a quieter location try one of the dive operators in Marsa Alam

Hurghada is split into sections El Dahhar is the old city this is where most of the budget hotels are located and is the Egyptian part of town, there are markets, local restaurants and an authentic bustle

Al-Sakkala is the tourist district with luxury hotels on the beach and lower end establishments behind the beach, the southern part of Al-Sakkala is the resort strip, filled with high end resorts, nightlife and western style shops

Most if not all Egyptian resorts will offer access to their private beaches for the day, prices range from about $15PP upwards depending on star rating and whether sun beds/towels/drinks/AI is included...they will all offer good value, the best 5* luxury resorts around Hurgarda are IMO: The Oberoi Sahl Hasheesh, Inter Continental Abu Soma & Kempinski Hotel Soma Bay although there are 100's to choose from

There are also some aqua park resorts, Jungle Aqua Park, Sinbad water park resort & Primasol Titanic beach and aqua park all accept day pass guests
