I just noticed my DL expired on my birthday this month..going on a cruise aug 4th...of course my passport also expired this year lol....Just wondering if my DL for a govt issued photo id was still ok?....I renewed my license online and apparently it got mailed but never made it to me......now its probably too late to receive a new one

Can't you go to your local DMV (or whatever the office that deals with license/ect in your state is called) and get a new one processed in person? That would be what I would do....I would not chance it using expired documents.

tsa rules require an unexpired licensed or unexpired passport...it depends on how closely they look at it...

Technically, your expired DL is now no longer a valid, gubmint issued ID.

You need the ID to show to port security - whether they check the expiry date - who knows. But I wouldn't chance it......

As for the expired passport - no way I would chance using it to show CBP on your return. Carnival will probably not allow you to board with it, either

Hopefully you have a certified BC.

And just how many people do you think really look at the date of expiration? All they're doing is checking the name and the photo. I would take my chances!

And lose your money you paid because you took a chance and now you can't get on the ship really not smart advise!!!

Oh ya... that's a great plan. almost fool-proof

How about going to the DMV and seeing if you can get a temporary one? That and and your expired DL is usually enough to get thru Security at the airport - better option than risking on them not checking the expiration date.....

Don't count on it. For a few years, I had an expired license with a renewel sticker on the back (my state used to mail you one if went four years without a ticket).

They always, always noticed. Sometimes they'd flip it over looking for a renewel sticker. More often than not, they would say "your license is expired!" and I would have to tell them to look at the back. This is how it was every time I went through airport security at many different airports.

Uh, go to the DMV and get another one. An expired one will not be accepted.

This might work to get through security, but when you go to check in they don't just look at it. They swipe or scan every drivers' license or passport to cross-check them with databases and ensure validity. The computer will know.

In 2004 My MIL had been living in FL for 14 years, an was still using her old CT DL for ID. (She stopped driving soon after moving down there).

She came up to visit during the hurricane barrage of '04 (her first time flying since 9/11). When it was finally time to put her on the plane to go home, they told us she couldn't use a 14 year old expired DL as ID. I said, "you let her fly here with it, you darn well better let her fly home with it, because she sure as H#!! isn't coming back to my house." The did let her fly home, but I don't believe they would make the same exception today.

Actually, TSA at Security at the airport can let you go thru without ANY valid ID - you will have to undergo further screenings and it will take time, but it is possible these days....

Let me clarify....#1 I already renewed my license back in may...my license expired in July....I was two months early in renewing so I did think ahead. Problem is my id got lost in the mail apparently. I do have the printout from the Texas DMV saying that paper is now my DL....so I think worst case that printout and my old dl with my photo will work. In addition I could bring my passport also with my picture on it even though its expired. I will have my birth certificate with me too.

Your good then- so long as you have the paper one showing you renewed and your old ID with the picture you will be fine.

You MUST have a DMV that you can get to before your cruise. Why take a chance. In fact, in MI, you must renew by your birthday or pay even more money to renew your license. Just a FYI, if your passport is 6 months or nearer to expiration, other countries may not accept it. I would advise renewing passports about 9 months out. Sure, you'll lose almost a year of your 10 years, but you'll also avoid hassles.

One part of my job is getting information from people's drivers license. The expiration date is the first thing I check.
