Style of Dress

I&J Cruisers

Recommended Posts

This is not a dress code thread. I have a specific question. We have been X cruisers for several years but for several unrelated reasons haven't been on X for about 2 years. We are booked on Silhouette in Aqua Class next January. I've noticed a change in the brochure description of formal nights. Officially Formal night seems to be observed only in the main dining room. When we last sailed on X the feel was much dressier on all nights than other mass market lines. Has this changed with the new policy? I enjoy dressing for dinner. DH will wear his tuxedo if others are wearing them. According to the brochure the current dress code in Blu and in all speicality restaurants is elegant casual for all nights. Should I advise him to take the tux or leave it home?

I seriously think you can do what is best for you.

You won't feel out of place walking around the ship dressed up and I personally love seeing men in tuxes and women in long gowns dancing, playing casino games, sitting in bars, and so on. If space is an issue, you won't feel out of place if he wears a suit and you wear a lovely dress or pantsuit on formal nights. Caveat: I have not dined in Blu, only in MDR and Murano so I speak only for walking around the ship in general - not Blu. We will let others who have more experience with Blu chime in for that.

I think the itinerary is a big factor. Everyday dining, when we cruised in Norway, I didn't see as much dressing for dinner except on formal nights. When we cruised the Mediterranean ports, people dressed better at dinner time.

On formal nights, we did see tuxes, though possibly fewer than in the past, I'm not sure. I didn't count, and my husband didn't take his last year and didn't feel out of place, but didn't feel out of place in his tux either - it was a luggage issue (and I don't agree with it, but I'm not carrying his bag, so I can't get crazy arguing - there are much better things to worry about).

Just ask to be seated near the people dressed like you are - you could start at trend. I was about to go off on an Alice's Restaurant riff on starting a trend, but I have to get back to work.

totally up to you guys. There will be a mix of men in tuxedos, men in suits and men in smart casual - anywhere from sport coat with no tie to nice collared shirts. And there are always some who don't dress up at all. We always bring husbands tux and my cocktail dresses regardless of which line we are on - we actually enjoy formal night and dressing up and have very few opportunities for it where we live. Others don't seem to either enjoy it or want to follow the guidelines - thankfully, Celebrity offers options for most everyone. Yes, the menus are usually more upscale in the MDR on formal nights and usually, the shows are the big production shows after dinner and yes, there is usually a more "fancy" feel to the ship during formal nights - formal picture stations, etc.

Even in Blu (we only book AQ anymore on Celebrity as we love Blu), dress will vary on formal night. Even though Smart casual is the dress code all the time, many people do dress up more for formal night, even to tuxedos and cocktail dresses or dressy women's outfits.

But - up to you. Some people don't pack the tux anymore depending on the itinerary - they find a suit works just as well. To each their own. Us - we dress up and love it - and love the compliments we get every time, usually from those who don't choose to observe formal night for whatever reason.

Enjoy!

Bring the tux! Our observation last March was the same as on prior cruises. We were in AQ and ate there one formal night and in a specialty restaurant on the other. My general impression was that, even though formal dress was not required in these venues, the majority of the patrons were dressed formally. At the same time there were enough people dressed smart casual that one would not feel out of place dressed either way.

we have the same observation from our Silho cruise in April, most everyone in BLU was dressed in formal attire on formal nights...ship overall has a "gala feel" esp. on the first formal night..

not sure how the new brochure description will affect things going forward...we'll see what develops for the winter cruise season & how our packing efforts go for our March cruise...

I appreciate this not being a dress code thread but perhaps one where info can be related back on the specific ques. raised by OP....
