Hi, We are on the same cruise as you and we're using the train to go down to Southampton.

There is a direct service from Three Bridges to Southampton Central - takes approx 2 hours. And Victoria is about 40 mins from there.

If getting on at London Victoria the train starts from there and goes direct to Southampton Central.

Just had a look on the Southern Railway Website and it shows the cost per person is £25.40 (off peak) £26.30 (anytime) one way and journey time is approx 2 and a half hours.

Its a stopping service but is direct with no need to change trains.

Then on arrival get a taxi to the port from the station. Shouldn't be more than £10 looking at mapping for port from the station.

Have you been over to the Forum for this trip? There is quite a few of us on there, pop by and have a read?

Further to my above post if you actually pick an exact train you want to get on the fare seems to only be £10!

If you do this though you do have to get on that train and cannot use the ticket on another so if you know the exact time you want to leave and get that train a great saving to be had, but if does restrict what trains you can use.

We used Advanced Airport Cars who are based in Southampton for our transfer last year from Gatwick to Southampton and found them fantastic! .. The cost was £85 and they even diverted to a Supermarket on the way there to stock up on water and soft drinks etc .. I know you can do cheaper on the train and if you don't mind dragging cases etc thats fine but if you want a little bit of luxury and ease of travel I highly recommend them :) .. They do pickups from other London locations also btw

last time we did an RCCL from southampton - we flew to gatwick and then RCCL put on a coach transfer to Southampton (included). We are doing a transatlantic next April - and they are putting on transfers from Southampton to Heathrow - maybe worth checking with them to see if they have got a transfer organised already

Yes, you can all get from central London to Southampton for under £200.

For a private transfer

try www.westquaycars.com or www.smithsforairports.com

Both are frequently used & recommended on CC, West Quay charges from £140 (central London), Smiths will be about the same. Journey time is about 2 hours, depending on precise hotel location and day/time of travel.

I don't understand references to East Coast Trains, they go in a totally different direction - to Scotland

And it certainly doesn't make sense to go via Heathrow - even though it's the right direction.

Public transport options:

By coach (bus)

http://coach.nationalexpress.com/

From London (Victoria coach station) to Southampton (coach station)

Don't select the cruise ship terminal option, it doesn't apply to your sailing.

Fare from about £6pp, journey time 2hrs 15. Advance booking very very strongly recommended. Luggage limitation per passenger is 2x44lb cases plus hand-luggage. Not strictly observed by drivers, but if you have a fair bit more you may have to pay extra or the driver may refuse it if it puts his vehicle over its legal weight limit.

or

http://www.greyhounduk.com/

Greyhound operate from bus stands close to Victoria coach station, destination is Southampton (Town Quay).

An almost-identical service to Nat Express

by train.

http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/planjourney/search

From London (Waterloo) station.

Three direct trains per hour, destination is Southampton central station, journey time about 90 minutes. No need to pre-book, buy at the station, approx. £36 pp. No luggage limits that would concern you.

A complication.

If you pre-book from Waterloo with

http://uk.megabus.com/megatrain.aspx

tickets are silly-cheap, from as little as £1 pp. They're only available on some of those trains, you must specify the train time, tickets are not amendable. Other than those limitations, its the same trains, the same service.

Or you can travel on a different route, from London (Victoria rail station) to Southampton central. This is much slower, because it goes south out of London, through Gatwick airport, to the south coast & then west along the coast. Direct hourly service, journey time about 2hrs 30, variable fares around £10 to £20.

There is also an indirect service from Victoria, best avoided due to an awkward change.

There is also an indirect service from London (Paddington) station, involves one change. Worth considering if your hotel is in the Paddington area.

In Southampton, from all trains & coaches you'll need a £5 to £8 taxi ride to any cruise terminal.

The London toolkit website linked by Redrobo is excellent. Check out other pages on that website.

If you are starting from central London, there are few reasons to use the Southern train from Victoria as it's unbelievably slow.

The best train route is Waterloo to Southampton Central, which is about 1¼ hrs on a fast train (twice an hour).

The only advantage of the slow Southern train is that you can get cheap tickets on them. But if you're simply after cheap, you may be able to get Megatrain tickets for the slower Waterloo trains, which are still fast in comparison to the Victoria trains.

We used Smiths for Airports. We used them from our hotel in London to Southampton. It was 155 GBP for six people, which was cheaper than cruise line transfer or other prices we could find. They were quick and direct. For two people, it would have been more costly per person, but price would have been less.
