Krazy4Kruisin' Posted December 22, 2012 #1 Share Posted December 22, 2012 Couldn't get the link to work, so I copied/pasted the story. Federal authorities said an Idaho man who took a cruise from Port Canaveral earlier this month had more than 1,000 images of child pornography on a laptop he took on the ship. According to a complaint filed in Orlando federal court, when authorities inspected passengers onboard Royal Caribbean's Monarch of the Seas cruise ship Dec. 10, they encountered Gary Lee Reed. Agents said they searched Reed's laptop and found about 1,162 images and videos depicting child pornography. Roughly 350 of the victims in those videos have already been identified by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The images included sex abuse on toddlers and babies, the complaint said. Reed, of Blackfoot, Idaho, told agents he has viewed child pornography for many years. He was arrested and recently indicted by an Orlando federal grand jury on a child pornography charge.

rebeccalouiseagain Posted December 22, 2012 #4 Share Posted December 22, 2012 I don't know what makes people want to have sex with children. It's just awful. Fortunately- kids are far safer on a cruise ship than on land. I had an ideal childhood but we had a creepy man in our neighborhood that molested kids and I had the misfortune of living two houses away from him. Another kid was molesting his own mentally disabled sister and went to jail. I used to swim in their pool and play on their trampoline! Yikes. So I prefer ships to the real world. Bravo to the police for catching this menace. The scarey thing is the mention of "missing and exploited children". That's just awful that these kids have obviously gone through hell. Rare Lionesss Posted December 22, 2012 #5 Share Posted December 22, 2012 I wonder what the red flag was that RCI was able to capture him. Could he have been on some watch list, or could RCI monitor his activities on-line or was he just plain stupid. Whatever,, thank God he was caught. Safe travels. WillWorkForCruise121 Posted December 22, 2012 #6 Share Posted December 22, 2012 I wonder what tipped them off to check his laptop? I'm glad he was caught but I wonder what happened that caused them to investigate him. I hope there was no incident on board that triggered the investigation. Esmerelda Posted December 22, 2012 #11 Share Posted December 22, 2012 My thought was if he's going through RC online for his internet searches while on board, that would have been a huge red flag. I know RC can see where you've been surfing, that was probably his first mistake. From there they may have decided to check his laptop. Yes, I agree with the other poster, save the rest of us law abiding, tax paying citizens from having to pay for this moron once he goes to federal prison. (that's a 3rd degree felony to have it in your possession in the state of Florida) Just toss him overboard. Absolutely beyond disgusting.
celle Posted December 22, 2012 #12 Share Posted December 22, 2012 Getting to the privacy matters, WHY would the 'authorities' be inspecting passengers onboard and WHY would they be able to search the laptop? Exactly! How many times have we taken laptops on board? Has anyone ever had their laptop inspected? The story is odd and incomplete. Something unusual must have alerted the "authorities". TEXASMUNK Posted December 22, 2012 #14 Share Posted December 22, 2012 NO!!! When you come back into the USA, customs, simply by your showing up for entry is provided access to all that you possess. So anyone looking for an "escape clause" for this guy, just missed the boat. My only wish is that he had been arrested in just about any other foreign nation....prefereably Mexico....Then we would have found out what it is like to be a victim... louthebowler Posted December 22, 2012 #17 Share Posted December 22, 2012 It wouldn't be right to throw him over board, well not until he had his bits chopped off first and then thrown him into shark infested waters , hopefully a painful end for him, and saving the nations tax payers from watching someone try to defend him. Coralc Posted December 22, 2012 #18 Share Posted December 22, 2012 Exactly! How many times have we taken laptops on board? Has anyone ever had their laptop inspected? The story is odd and incomplete. Something unusual must have alerted the "authorities". I always wondered about that too. There was a highly publicized case of a guy crossing the Canadian border that had his laptop inspected and was also arrested for child pornography. There must be some sort of watch list or maybe it is based on internet searches. Horrible, unlawful behavior, for sure. No authority has ever asked to look at our laptop when we travel with it. fireman3632 Posted December 23, 2012 #19 Share Posted December 23, 2012 They run every passenger through a crime data computer. Years ago a guy I went to school with (trust me, we were not friends) was found to have had several outstanding warrants for rape and he was subsequently arrested. We have vacation and car photos on our computers....I am just wondering WHY they select individuals for inspection of their computers? It seems that it would be a more lengthy process than just turning the thing on and off at a TSA screening.

Likey authorities suspected him of this crime prior to boarding and used either a clause in the cruise contract or the authority of Customs to circumvent some red tape. Regardless of the exact circumstance, Bravo to any of those assisting in getting this monster what he deserves.

Likey authorities suspected him of this crime prior to boarding and used either a clause in the cruise contract or the authority of Customs to circumvent some red tape. That'd be my guess (authority of customs). I was stunned to learn in law school the power customs & border protection have when you're in that limbo phase (awaiting customs screening) reentering the country. They can search your laptop and all of your possessions. Raises all sorts of concerns in the international business community about confidential trade secrets, etc., but it's the law. Cruise contract wouldn't govern the actions of US Customs. It's just a legal agreement between you and the cruise line.
