jackretired Posted January 26, 2013 #1 Share Posted January 26, 2013 Does HAL use tenders supplied by the harbor or do they use a life boat? Once off the tender, how long of a walk to the tour bus? How many steps? Steep ramps? Have you ever been diverted to a different port because of unsafe tendering conditions?
iancal Posted January 27, 2013 #2 Share Posted January 27, 2013 I cannot speak to what Hal does but I can tell youi that it is a very very steep climb from where the tenders will dock to the central area of Sorento. So much so that there is a city bus that makes the trip. last time we were there Oceania was in port. They provided a bus to take their cruisers up the 'cut' to the city. I would be ver surprised if HAL did not to something similar. if you have medical issues or trouble walking youi can definitely not do this any other way. CruiserBruce Posted January 27, 2013 #3 Share Posted January 27, 2013 It is very common in Europe for the tenders to be operated by the port. But can't directly answer if that is true at Sorrento. Can agree it is a very steep climb into Sorrento.
sail7seas Posted January 27, 2013 #4 Share Posted January 27, 2013 Sorrento is charming IMO. If there is any way you can find to assist you being able to enjoy the city, it is worth the effort. I wish I had substantial recommendations how but I do not.
pearliemae Posted January 27, 2013 #5 Share Posted January 27, 2013 Been there on Azamara and Cunard. Ships tenders were used by both lines. We were diverted to Naples last November on the Maasdam cruise due to weather causing unsafe tendering conditions in Sorrento. Interestingly, all the ships tours for Sorrento were rescheduled for Naples pickup, but the ship's tour office did not set up an independent transfer bus, like they offer for Florence and Rome. Many unhappy comments were heard about this. We spent some wonderful time in the museum. Fantastic exhibits. FYI, a cab to Sorrento both ways and a 3-4 hr visit from the port in Naples is right around 200 Euros.
