March 30, 2013 Celebrity Summit

Southern Caribbean on Celebrity Summit departing from San Juan

Our back ground: we are 42 & 39 we’ve been on 10+ cruises with no real loyalty CCL, NCL, RCCL & Princess (except to say that we know Carnival is not for us). We did a similar cruise 2 years ago on Princess.

Embarkation was a smooth as I’ve ever had. It was less than 10 minutes from taxi drop off to welcome aboard champagne on deck 5.

We booked 9054 Aqua Class room. It was as expected. There are pictures all over the web as I will not post any. The steward, Paul, was efficient and non-intrusive. The bed and pillows are more than adequate. My DW said there was a faint musty smell in the bathroom. I did not notice this as I must be hard of smelling! (Also we’ve encountered this in beach resort rooms as well.) Storage was ample for a 7 day cruise.

We ate in BLU because we were in an AC cabin. We are not foodies by any stretch but BLU was amazing. DW did have to send one meat portion back once, but she’s done that a Ruth Chris’ as well. We had Alex and Anita 5 out of 7 nights in BLU and they are great. Marcel, the Maitre’D, was always there if anything was needed. The sommelier, May, was very busy but always had time to answer any questions we had. She was great. We did eat breakfast in BLU once and it was great too. However we are not early risers when on vacation so BLU was closed when we were ready for breakfast.

BLU makes the AC class worth the extra money all by itself!

The drink package was a true delight! We never waited more than 3 minutes for a cocktail anywhere on the ship.

We didn’t see any of the review shows, it’s not our style. We like a good play or musical. We did enjoy the comedian (although we we’re hoping for an R rated show at midnight). He did do a liars club show in one of the lounges afterward that was fun.

The Martini Bar was where we spent most nights after dinner. Gede and Putu were excellent bartenders. . If you like a Black Russian ask Gede for a B.A.R. tell him Scott sent you J. We did ask the bar manager (he looked like Brian Urlacher) to change the music but that never happened.

We did a couples message while in St Croix that was well needed. The Persian Gardens was soothing and we used it a few times during the week.

Only complaint, the deck chairs were not in the best shape. I’ve seen others complain about this as well. The answer is: isn’t that why you grab 3 towels to cover the chair in the 1st place?

St. Croix:

SandCastles resort seemed to be the option for a quiet Island (plus it was Easter and it was raining). The resort is small with a small beach. It's a few minutes by taxi and $12 round trip PP.

St Kitts:

We booked the Rail & Sail. It was fun thing to do once. The train tour guide was funny and the punch was flowing freely. The catamaran was a nice way to get back to the boat.

FYI don't let the locals put those monkeys on you for a picture, they’ll charge to $10 to get them off of you. It seemed like quite the scam.

Dominca:

The river tubing was a lot of fun. FYI, It is not rainy season so the river was shallow in spots and you could be bumped by stones underwater. In spite of this it was a fantastic morning.

The Emerald pool was a bit of a hike maybe 10 minutes. The pool is small but refreshing. The guide said it was about 75 degrees. We felt it was much closer to 65. South Floridians will find it too cold.

Grenada:

We booked the Catamaran Ultimate Sea Sun & Fun. It was a long excursion that ended too soon. 3 snorkel stops and a lobster lunch on a secluded (private) beach. The snorkeling was good, the lobster was huge.

This may have been the best excursion we've ever done.

St Thomas:

We took a taxi to Sapphire beach. It was a little more crowded than I was expecting. That may have been my fault as we got a late start and didn't get there till 11:30am. The beach and water was spectacular. The beach service was slow, but we weren’t in a hurry.

We did a similar cruise 2 years ago on Princess. This cruise crushed Princess. The food, service and ship in my mind were all better. I felt nickel and dimed on Princess, where I did not on Celebrity. Some of this may be due to the drink package but not all of it.

It wasn’t perfect but I’d rate it a 9/10.

In all honesty those monkeys also bite, scratch and carry disease. On My Christmas sailing in 2011 a woman was biten on the face by one of those cute little cuppoccino monkeys. It was horrible and thankfully she was treated in the medical center and did not have to end her cruise. I knew to avoid them by reading cruise critic...

I'm looking forward to reading yours as well.

Brett was great, gamblin and drinkin 2 of my favorite things!

Did you read the other reveiw? That person complained about not getting a spoon in his setup each day @ dinner or the same daily rug in his bathroom! LOL

Thank you for a very positive review! We're on the Summit in June and we were beginning to wonder if we had made a mistake, given some of the recent reviews.

You are so right - that IS why we take a couple of beach towels to cover the chairs.

thanks,

Yes! I couldn't believe when I read that! I almost made a comment....but didn't;) I kind of referenced it when I commented on the post but didn't specify that exactly. After getting "yelled at" in my post that I wrote a long time ago (we discussed that) I was afraid to make a comment......but couldn't believe what was said!!.....btw, Brett says hi and misses his evenings with you!
