Royal Princess - smoke from casino rising to boutiques?

In the Entertainment Video, Ron Goodman talks (boasts) about the spiral staircase that connects the Casino and the Deck 7 boutiques. If you look at the animation, the staircase is wide open from the Casino to the boutiques on Deck 7. That means all the smoke that stinks up the Casino will also stink up Deck 7. Yuck! You would think that Princess would have thought this one out a little better.

I guess we'll see... there are certainly ways to mitigate cigarette smoke and hopefully those methods will be employed. Back in the day, I worked at a company that had an in-house cafeteria. There was a designated smoking section and there were "smoke eater" units in the ceiling. You could sit next to a smoker's table and not smell any smoke...

My experience is that it never works on board ships. The smoke permeates the carpeting, upholstery and drapes, so it always stinks in or near the casino, even on non-smoking nights.

I agree. It is the worst on transatlantic cruises when everyone who wants to smoke (not gamble) comes into the casino on days when the weather is not conducive to smoking outside.

Maybe the casino will be nonsmoking.

I wouldn't bet on it.

Celebrity has made all inside areas, including the casino, none smoking. So, there is a posibility. :)

As an ex smoker (3+ years) I would think they would have smoking areas only outside of the enclosed part of the ship. They stopped the balcony smoking so I don't understand why they allow it in the casino. Alot of land based casinos are now going with the flow and putting in smoking rooms or no smoking gambling areas. Even when I was a smoker I didn't like it in a casino or bars.

Smoke does travel.

Although the design of the Casino atrium seems to point to smoke rising to the ships above, I can't fathom that Princess would make such a huge design error. Given their onboard smoking policy, there must be some way that this will be dealt with...making the Casino a non-smoking venue seems to be the only way to really accomplish that.

Funny, I've done 3 TA's and never realized that was going on.

The prohibiting of smoking in cabins was instituted at the start of 2012. So it was at that time smokers started using the casino as the only indoor space they were welcome to smoke. (Cigar bar does not attract cigarette smokers.)

If your TAs were before 2012, you would not have seen this.

You didn't show the next part of the post. The Casino was filled with smoke on the TA's even before 2012 and the Smoking Policy change. OP was just commenting that they had not realized the reason for all of the smoke in the Casino.

Before 2012, gamblers smoked in the casino. Lots of smoke.

Starting in 2012 non-gamblers flocked to the casino just to smoke. Even more smoke. On the Star Princess, slot machines were removed from part of the casino so couches and chairs could be put there for smokers.

I'm well aware of what has been done on at least some ships and we have sailed on three of them since the new smoking policy went into effect. Even prior to last year Princess Casino's couldn't handle the cigarette smoke. It didn't take the policy change to make it a bad situation. Fortunately I don't need to make a "donation" at the Casino when I cruise and can avoid them.

This is not a smoking thread but rather a concern that the design of the Royal/Regal Casinos will create smoke issues in areas harder to avoid for other passengers. Princess and Fincantieri have not shown the ability to control smoke within the current casinos on the Grand class ships and I have no confidence they can do better with this questionable design element of the Royal/Regal :(

The only thing I didn't care for in the Island's layout was the location of the cigar bar on the Promenade Deck midships (as well as smoking being allowed in Crooners). I had a hard time hanging out in the atrium on that deck as it was often smokey, and became more smokey ever time the door to the bar opened.

You misunderstood my comment. I wasn't doubting you or disputing what you said in any way. I was actually commenting on my own blindness in totally missing/not realizing that was going on. BTW, my two most recent TA's were April 2012 and Dec 2012, both on the Crown.

Thank you IECalCruiser. You absolutely understood my point in starting this thread. It is not a smoking thread. It is a thread about foresight, ship design and whether I want to go on either one of these ships. Can't wait to read comments of people on board this summer.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm also curious as to what is going to happen. I'm travelling on the Royal Princess in November with my fiancé who is a first-time cruiser and VERY sensitive to cigarette smoke (to the point of requiring an inhaler when around it).

I've assured him that we will be able to avoid the areas on deck where smoking is allowed, but if they allow smoking in the casinos/boutique (based on the design we've seen in preview videos), we're not going to be able to enjoy an even greater portion of the ship then originally anticipated.

I hope Princess takes non-smokers and those with health concerns into consideration. I have no problem avoiding the casino, but I take exception to having to avoid the boutiques or more due to the desire of other passengers to have an indoor cigarette.

I too was surprised to see this design return on the Royal. It was the biggest fatal flaw, IMO of the SUN class ships. It made their atriums unpleasant and on the Royal, they seem to be really posturing their atrium as a place to spend a lot of time. I really couldn't believe they did that; and I REALLY couldn't believe they were bragging about it. I think it has the potential to reduce sales in their boutiques as non-smokers (the majority of the crowd) will not want to go there or stick around long if they do.

I agree, tequilasunrise. Looking at the deck plans on their site, it looks like the art gallery is directly above the casino. I know I personally am not too keen on bringing back a piece of art that has been subjected to smoke, even if only for a short period of time.

I just hope it's something they've given a lot of consideration. Princess DOES already have cruise ships where smoking is not permitted in the casino, so it's not like they would be setting an unusual precedent if they relegated those who wish to smoke indoors to the cigar ship or an alternative enclosed area.

Which ships are they?

The Sun, Dawn, and Sea Princess. Granted, I know these are tinier ships, so that could be part of the non-smoking decision.

Many things are different on Princess Australia ships. Somewhat apples and oranges
