Royal Princess - smoke from casino rising to boutiques?

Many things are different on Princess Australia ships. Somewhat apples and oranges

That's fair. I've never been on an Australian cruise (only Caribbean), and I'm newish to the boards, so I don't have lot of experience with differences among the ships. :)

I agree, tequilasunrise. Looking at the deck plans on their site, it looks like the art gallery is directly above the casino. I know I personally am not too keen on bringing back a piece of art that has been subjected to smoke, even if only for a short period of time.

I wouldn't worry about the artwork, in general, you get a new piece from their warehouse and not the exact piece that is on the ship unless it is a one of a kind original, which most aren't.

Thanks, TorontoTL. I did not know that! I've never purchased in the past but I've definitely seen some pieces I would like it my home. At least this won't be a deterrent!

Let's hope the smoke from the casino doesn't raft up the staircase. We cruised on the Freedom of the Seas, and it had a spiral staircase down into the casino from the promenade. I didn't notice any smell coming from the casino when I was on the promenade near the staircase.

I'm a non smoker as well who is very bothered by smoke. I too am hoping for the best that there won't be a strong smoke odour on the deck above the casino. Since Princess is now having more smoke free nights in the casino, we can be hopeful that even if it is smokey, it won't be every night. Fingers crossed, I'm sure that they thought of this and have good ventilation to prevent problems.

I am asthmatic and a non-smoker. This is strictly my opinion. I just returned from a Coastal Cruise and Hawaii cruise. Both cruises had no smoking evenings in the Casino. I found the casino to be much busier (no slots available). I also noticed that the slots seemed to be less generous. Is there a correlation or just coincidence? When I did get on a machine, I always lost money (LOL). I am sure it is because non-smokers also do not drink as much.

I am all for a non-smoking casino. What I did notice was:

The Sapphire actually had lounge chairs and an area for smokers in the casino.

On most ships, you need to walk through the casino to get to the Princess Theater. So, most often, people coming out of the theater stop in the casino for a smoke.

Smokers use the casino to smoke instead of the Churchill lounge or designated smoking areas in the open areas. Very few people are ever in the Churchill lounge.

I am thankful that Princess has no-smoking evenings. This is a good compromise. I have met some very considerate smokers in the casino. Thank you for being aware of others around you.

Renee

I am a non smoker married to a light smoker ( yes I always tell him it's still one too many) DH never smokes in the house and on cruise will usually be at the outside area or the casino. I am not a gambler but on the Princess ships I have found them to be smokier then the casino on Carnival I love the casino bar area I Carnival as its in site but far enough away to where you don't have to stop, drop and roll to just walk thru. I find the casino bar being inside the casino on Princess I feel like I need a Hazmat suit to just run in for a second. I have however never noticed the smoke rising to the deck above or out into the atrium area. I have sailed on CB, Ruby and The Crown.

I am hoping the new layout of the casino bar on The Royal is more like it is on Carnival ships Atleast Conquest and Fantasy class seems like the bar on Spirit class is inside the casino like Princess.

I avoid the cigar bar at all costs I get migraines pretty easy from cigar a d perfume smells.

At any case I don't let where smoke is etc hold me back on my cruising fun I just learn where it is and stay away.

Agreed some things are different. I have sailed Dawn Princess three times in the Americas and once in Australia. It is true that smoking had been banned in the casino in Australia, but I thought by then they had figured out the fatal flaw in the open design and placement of the Casino and thus had banned it. Not sure if that is it or if it's Aussie preference. Although I noticed probably more smoking in Australia than here in general (keep in mind I live in Seattle which may not be a fair comparison); on the ship there, people tended to eat less, smoke less, and drink more. I like Australians :D

  • 1 month later...

I started this thread and again asked about this problem on the Q&A with Rai Calouri. He did not respond, but someone who has been on board the Royal did - with photos.

These pictures clearly evidence that there is absolutely NO way to prevent the smoke from the casino rising to all the shops/atrium above. Not a good design move Princess!

Non-smokers/asthmatics/people with allergies all need to know that this problem will exist on the Royal and Regal.

P.S. Mr. Calouri, in response to someone's question about indoor smoking areas on the Royal, stated that, in addition to Churchills on the port side, the STARBOARD side of the casino would also be a smoking area.

Even with an opening that size, using positive pressure ventilation it COULD be done (basically push the smoke outward and down from the opening and into collectors).

Doesn't mean Princess is doing that and I would have loved to see an official response as this is a concern point for me (not critical)

That is a mighty big assumption on your part for a ship of a completely new design and class that you have never been on, have no idea exactly where the casino smoking on the starboard side is restricted to, nor are you familiar with whatever type of advanced ventilation systems this new ship has. Why don't we wait until the maiden voyage passengers disembark before we start screaming that 'the sky is falling'.

Thanks Dave for your response!

To the OP, one reason Mr. Caluori may not have responded to you is that you managed to mispell his name or maybe he just did not have an answer for you.

Dave is right. Why don't you wait until the first few sailings to form an opinion? At that time, you can decide if you want to sail on the Royal and/or the Regal or not.

Mea culpa -- my typo on THIS post, yes. But not on the one I sent to him.

I am far from alone in being concerned about this. We have all eagerly awaited the launch of these ships and this matter has been mentioned in a number of threads. I am waiting to hear what people say starting in 2 weeks...

BTW, you misspelled "mispell". :)

Interesting thread! I'm booked on a b2b in November, so this is of particular interest to me as a non-smoker. All of my other Princess cruises I have had to limit my time in the casino because it can be pretty bad in there...I come out after a short time coughing and my hair and clothes reeking of smoke. :(

Not leaping to any conclusions, just anxious to hear what the first few rounds of passengers report.

I am late to this thread but wanted to add my 2 cents. My husband and I did the Trans-Atlantic cruise in late April. It was a terrific time and we loved both the sea days and the ports. Our one complaint was the some nights the smoke from the casino poured into the Atrium and kept us from enjoying the atrium. We also had trouble visiting some of the boutiques "special sales" as they were set up directly across from the casino and my husband couldn't be near the smoky area. Also, considering how sensitive more and more folks are to smoke, why oh why is the casino used as a gathering point for excursions? It is disappointing that Princess doesn't vent the casinos better.

Celebrity has made all inside areas, including the casino, none smoking. So, there is a posibility. :)
This must have changed in the past two years because that was definitely not the case on the Summit a couple of years ago. There were ashtrays, and smoking, in at least two lounges.
