Brighton | Melbourne | Bayside | Visitors Guide

For anyone returning to Melbourne or those who wish to spend a day at the beach close to the Port, a visit to Brighton is well worth considering.

Brighton Beach with its multicoloured beach sheds has been a symbol of Melbourne Australia for a long time.

With almost 6 kilometres of coastline within Brighton's suburban boundary, there is a diverse range of attractions and activities for all. A pedestrian and bicycle path runs along much of the foreshore, lined with palm trees, gardens and open lawns. The Middle Brighton Pier leads to a large marina facility and adjacent to that are the Middle Brighton Baths. These historic sea baths have been enjoyed by visitors since 1881 and the complex includes a cafe, restaurant, gymnasium and function facilities. Designated areas of Brighton's beaches are used by windsurfers and water skiers.

The most famous spot on Brighton's coastline is the Dendy Street Beach. The colourful bathing boxes which line this stretch of coast are a well-known Melbourne icon and reflect a bygone era where swimmers and visitors to the beach had private changing and storage facilities. Good views of the bathing boxes and Melbourne's skyline can be enjoyed from the gardens at Green Point.

Please bear in mind that cruise ship passengers , while desiring to see and enjoy all they possibly can in a city, or any port of call , only have 1 day in which to fit everything in.

Probably even less if the ship leaves at 5pm or thereabouts.

Are you a travel agent, tour operator or from Victoria Tourism by any chance?

No, I am not, room010.

I have visited this forum for many years and researched and gained much insight and information from members here.

As I live in Melbourne, I thought I could contribute some local tourist information to the Forum for others to read, from the local media ..........etc.

I live a 10 minutes from Brighton beach, and have to say, while the beach boxes are very cute, there is really nothing to draw a day tripper off a cruise ship to Brighton. Its a suburban beach, surrounded by, well, suburbia. You would really be missing out on everything else Melbourne has to offer. If you have more than a couple of days in Melbourne, then by all means, come and see Brighton.

Two the two local Melbourne people.

I have an unanswered post on another thread.

Need to get from cruise port to city. Have visited before. Remember getting ticket for 109 tram in store. Understand there is a new "Myki card"

I just want a RT ticket for tram No visitor's pass. Cost???? Heard about the free HOHO in the city ...Great.

Is there a shuttle from port to city now days???? Wayne

Hi Wayne, i don't know if there is a shuttle from the ship, possibly email Port of Melbourne and they may be able to tell you.

The Myki system works really well for those who live here, but unfortunately works out quite expensive for a one day visitor as you have to buy the card for $6 and then pay for the fare (about $7). But you have to have a Myki in order to use any trams, trains or buses. I believe these can be bought at the cruise terminal, or otherwise at the general store at the end of the pier where the ship docks (which is right next to the tram stop). There are no longer tickets on public transport, only Mykis. It would be good if it was like Singapore where they have the same card system, but you can get a refund for the card at the end of the day.

Hope this helps.
