New to cruising - Doing Monaco on our own?

Hi,

Monaco will be our first port on our first ever cruise. Our cruise is quite port intensive, so saving the 'big excursions' for other places. However, we would like to see Monaco. So three main questions:

1. When we arrive at port, is it far into the city centre?

2. Is it an easy city to navigate?

3. Where would you recommend seeing?

Thanks :)

It is not far from the Centre.

Near the port you can walk over to the Cathedral, to the Palace and to a nice area with outdoor gardens. You can also walk to the Oceanaire Museum. If you walk the other way in about 30 minutes you can get over to the Grand Casino area which has a lot of shops nearby and is also a great place to people watch.

The older part of the city, "the Rock" is pretty good. Mi think the casino is overrated, we just checked out all the expensive cars outside as it is 20€ to go inside. We really enjoyed the Exotic Gardens.

Do you want both Monaco and Monte Carlo or just one of them. There is a lot to see on the Monaco side, but a little readin on Google will really help you.Monte Carlo has the Casino as well as the American Casino which does not cost to get in as well as a lot of shops etc. Monaco on the other hand are little narrow street leading up to the Palace. Do reading and you can then pick what you want to see. Also, lots of info on this board if you put Monaco in the search box.It is a DYI port.

So easy to DIY here. You could just follow the other cruisers walking out if the port and up the hill to Monacoville. If you get there just before noon, you can watch the changing of the guard at the place. Wander around the old town area, have a wonderful French lunch, and if you still need an activity, walk or take the bus from the palace area over to the Jardin Exotiques, a really beautiful succulent garden built on the cliff that offers amazing views.

We took the train from Villefranche sur Mer to get there, and we could see the cruise port. The bus service is very good if you don't like walking. A good resource is Tom's Port Guide (just google it). He even has hints how to avoid the steep climbs!

Happy travels!
