Playing Trivia Games

Most likely not, but that is a question that I do remember being asked at least twice while on cruises, and that's the answer that's supplied. I don't question it as that's what answer they want.

As a retired reference librarian, this is why I stopped playing trivia by my 2nd cruise-Too many wrong answers. I even grabbed the copy of World Almanac from the library once & showed the staff member the CORRECT answer.

At that point, it became work & not a vacation:D

I do have a ship on a stick from the Breeze if anyone wants it.

I guess they didn't notice when they finished their Coke, it was the BOTTLE that was green.

This has turned into an interesting thread. I was wondering, on the Fun Times for the Victory, some of the trivia takes place in the casino. Is my 9 year old DD allowed to go with me in there? She wants to play with me too.

I had a member of the entertainment staff give me the brush off when I tried to explain that there were five, not four, basic tastes. I brought it up politely after the trivia session was done just so they could correct it for next time but I suspect he thought I was making up this 'umami-thing'. *grin* Oh well, I tried.

Along with saying that if you are "persistent" at guest services they will give you a SOOS in trade for your second place medal! Guest services has plenty to do without someone feeling they deserve a plastic ship instead of a medal for a silly game and badgering them until they get it. Really?

One cruise director has told me this. No, it wasn't the brand ambassador. And yes, I used the Platinum line with no other guests for this. No, they don't have anything better to do than assisting guests.

Poor staff on the Legend couldn't cope with all the nerds telling them that the answers to their questions were wrong.

All American / Canadian questions, and no general "world" questions so anyone could answer them, no matter where you were from.

When Carnival DID do ONE quiz for the Brits advertised as a "quiz for the Brits" The Americans complained.

Geez lighten up!

And they probably still use the wrong answer.

My last Malt Shoppe trivia they used a recording of a popular song by an obscure artist instead of the more well-known artist. We fought for that but everyone missed that one!

Such as the show "Win" on the Carnival Magic.

The show is scripted like any of their production shows. The passenger role is played by 2 different passengers on the cruise one in the early show and one in the late show.. I knew the Cruise Director and the ACD well and they offered me a chance to do it. There are about 3 lines you have to remember to keep the show on its normal progression. All of the other discussion you hear between the Emcee (the CD) and the passenger are unscripted banter. You get a dry walk through rehearsal, both pax at the same time, without costumes and without the singers and dancers doing any of their numbers. While onstage, a singer or dancer always has one hand in contact with the passenger/performer so he doesn't get out of position and interfer with the real cast's movements. It was fun.

One other point about trivia, We too participate in many contests and know there are many wrong and unprovable answers. Such as the most popular cat name, who knows for sure there is no cat name registry. We also try to correct the entertainment staff when possible but often they don't care.

On our last cruise on the Liberty, they had "Super Trivia". You work as a team and there is no limit to the number in your team. Each team takes a turn and your team's captain rolls a large "die" with the numbers one through six. The first roll designated the category, the second roll was the point value. If your team can't answer the question, the next team can steal. This was a three-day event and took place on sea days. It lasted an hour each time (had to check the Fun Times for dates and times) and the points were cumulative. There were about 10-11 teams on our cruise, though one team didn't return for the second round. This was a lot of fun and we met some really great people. It took place in the Atrium Bar/lobby area. The biggest draw back was that passers-by would occasionally shout out answers!

I understand that those "in - the - know" race onto the ships tracking down certain CD's volunteering to be the scripted participants. The others are racingto the Red Frog on ships that have it to get that free beer and a pic.

We did a 3 day trivia last year on the Pride. It was held on the 3 seas days. That was alot of fun. It was guys against girls. GIRLS RULE!! If your team answered correctly you rolled a big die and got that number of points. If you got it wrong the other team got to roll. So it was anyones game. It went right down to the end.

We played trivia on Pride recently and it was not so good. The history questions were not historical (mainly referenced literary/mythological figures like Robin Hood and King Arthur) and when we complained we were essentially told to shut up and color. Then another time it was supposed to be SciFi Movies and TV trivia, but the crew member running it couldn't find the questions so it turned into Science trivia...75% of the folks walked out! Plus, as has been pointed out in previous posts, too many of the "correct" answers are actually erroneous, with no effort made to correct them.

There we were, having fun on the third night of Sports Trivia. DH had won both nights (sports info freak). Yes, we've been on some cruises; no, we do not memorize the trivias. We can hardly remember our own names.

A nice man we'd seen before came to sit with us, and have a throw down! He said DH had only won because he probably had heard the answers before. We reminded him that we raised our hands the night before and told the host, when he repeated a question or two from the first night. By the way, none of the folks from the night before had let the host know.

We're trying to live an ethical life and have a good time, and this man really upset me.

Even he did not compare to the guy in the back looking up the answers on his iPhone, when we played Phobias Trivia on another cruise. Now that was an expensive SOAS at international roaming rates!

Mr. Green Genes fan? ;)

Actually, I learned the song from when I was a kid and one of the NY tv stations used it for their late show intro. They'd play Syncopated Clock and the screen showed an animated cityscape with lights being turned off as the song played.

Here's a re-created version someone put on YouTube:

And I was a Mr Greenjeans fan too! :-)

I don't think it's fair to play the games if you know the answers from playing previously. I'm one of those people who, depending on your point view, either annoyingly or impressively wins the trivia games a lot. So the last few days of our cruise (7/29 -8/3 Glory) I joined other cruisers and helped them win their own ships.
