Playing Trivia Games

I love playing music trivia games. sometimes, it's a "name that tune" type of trivia where they play a few seconds of a song and you write down artist and title. Other times it has been actual trivia questions about music.

Usually it is broken down in to a decade or genre of music. Motown was one I attended, 80's, 50's etc.

Some people will get together with others and work as a team. I like to work alone on the music trivia personally. I think it's an unfair advantage for some to "pool" their knowledge (i'm a little too competitive I suppose lol).

It's still fun regardless and I try to make just about every music trivia game on board.

We also love trivia. They had a Civil War trivia on the Glory and it was very interesting. Even though we didn't win, we did learn some interesting stuff and it did spark some great conversation.

Just a question to those that know the answers and still go to trivia. What's the point? So you can win another plastic ship, or just to show off? The entire point of trivia is to see how much you really know, not to come in with all the answers and make people think you know something.

Pretty poor way to 'have fun'.

Cheers

I agree people that come in knowing the answers in advance & not because they actually just know aren't really being fair to those of us that go to have fun with our group. my son comes with us & we've been in games where it's ended in a tie & the smug know it all we've tied with HAD to win to be a show off. i'm mean really how impressive is it to beat an 11 year old? :(

but I will say the worst are the people walking by that shout out the answers! it's rude! if you want to play sit your butt down & play otherwise STFU & let the rest of play.

This has turned into an interesting thread. I was wondering, on the Fun Times for the Victory, some of the trivia takes place in the casino. Is my 9 year old DD allowed to go with me in there? She wants to play with me too.

I saw that no one has answered your question yet. When we were on Valor in May, they had the "Casino Stage" was listed in the Fun Times as where a lot of the Trivia contests took place. The "Casino Stage" isn't actually IN the casino. It's the seating area along the windows in the hallway that goes right by the casino. I'm pretty sure there would be no problem with your DD joining you to play since it's not actually in the casino. Hope this helps.

in 18 cruises I have yet to go to the same trivia. Questions were always different. Heck, even the name of the trivia was different.

When you are getting the same trivia questions is it on the same ship with the same staff?

The best music trivia we went to was the Glory with the assistant Emererson. (Dr E. ) he had the floor hoping and it was mighty crowded as the week wore on.

Glory also did a sports trivia that you had to attend each day as points were counted the entire week. Sports trivia was played at 5:30 which sucked when you were trying to get ready for dinner

Game show mania is fun because you never know what is going to be asked. Mostly sound bites from tv or movies. I got a party dance song and had to do the dance to get the point. I was quick on the buzzer and way ahead of my male competitors and they pulled me aside so one of them could answer at least one question. Only problem was getting up on the stage. The steps are too steep.

The BEST response, LOL!!!

It also reminds me of the old folks in the "married the longest time" group playing the Newlywed Game show on cruises that know each question but play anyway and suprise suprise...they win. WOW! Amazing!!

Minor correction, his name is Eversen and he is a great guy and a bud of ours. We got to know him on his first month at Carnival as part of the entertainment staff. He was and is very good at his job and was promoted to ACD very quickly. His picture is posted with pax on Facebook a lot.

Married 43 years and at this point who remembers half the stuff they ask.icon7.gif

Doesn't matter. They'll give you what you're supposed to say. And the guy in the old couple has to be a minister wearing funky boxers.

We were on Victory this past May and played 3 different Trivia games. They were all held in the small stage/seating area in the casino. Lee was the host and he was hilarious. Hubby and I worked together on the answers and no one cared. There were no more than 12 people playing every time we played. We won the first time (TV trivia), tied for first the second time (70's music) and I can't remember about the 3rd time - must be we didn't win that one! I can't imagine people wanting to know the questions just so that they could win -- for goodness sakes, its just a fun game. We now are the owners of 2 lovely ships on a stick!

I don't think anyone there had been "planted" -- we had seen each of them at various other activities. I have to say though, Lee was more entertaining the game and everytime we saw him elsewhere on the ship, he always said hello and remembered our names.

Lots of fun, if you don't take it too seriously.

From a blog post I did last year:

-------------------------------------

The Right Stuff ~

Sometimes I read cruising blogs and see that the bloggers (or their families) are winners. Winners of contests...trivia...whatever. My sister and I are smart. We know things. So, why haven't we won something?

Yeah, why? Because we never did it right. So as we boarded The Carnival Magic on Feb. 12, we vowed to do it right.

What is right? Right is teaming up. Right is looking over the schedule to see what we want to play. (Bean bag toss, no...hairy chest contest, no....country music trivia, yes!) Right is arriving early enough to get a good seat, an answer form, and to scope out the competition. Right is a sip of diet coke. Husbands are considered good luck, too!

Check, check, check and check.

FYI...the trophy (fondly named Ship-On-A-Stick) may be made of gold plastic, but they are very prized by all. They actually have the name of the ship on them too. Our first win was Famous Faces Mash-Up. (ex, Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise).

Our second was for Famous Movie Quotes. ("You want answers? You can't handle the truth!") So we won a total of two each.

Were we proud? YES!!!

But still, you always remember the one that got away. We were one point (we had 37 out of 40 possible) away from a win in Country Music Trivia, a category that should have been a cake walk for us! What the heck?? How is this possible?

OK, so we're not infallible. Now, we will never forget that Dust On The Bottle was a hit for David Lee Murphy. We had the song title, just couldn't come up with the name.

The sisters. We've got it.

-------------------------------

ha!

When we were on the Fascination in June, there was a lovely young lady named Krystee who hosted a lot of the trivia games. The first sea day, they had one at 9 in the morning and I forget what the subject area of the game was supposed to be, but I will NEVER forget that somebody answered that a popular drink was *GRAVY*!:D Krystee was like, "Gravy? Gravy? Who drinks gravy?". We saw the college kid who gave that answer several more times and Krystee never failed to poke a little fun at him for answering gravy. It was really funny.

We have watched 70 plus marriage shows and have been the "oldy weds" one time. No one scripts what you are supposed to say. If you cruise a lot, and we do, you know the questions they will probably ask. Usually they ask 10 questions on both CCL and RCCL and many are exactly the same. There are probably 20 different questions that are used, and we have heard them all, as have many other experienced cruisers. I do believe that the last question about being stranded on an island with a Nun or hooker is sometimes answered, by the CD host, differently than what was written, for laughs. But usually all 3 couples receive the same prize so it really doesn't matter.

The people at trivia aren't planted they are talking about the people on the game shows like the love & marriage show being planted & those being scripted the "plants" are actual guests they just aren't as randomly selected as the rest of the guests are lead to believe

People really get into the trivia, especially when they pit one team against another, like guys against girls in the Super Trivia. A passerby almost always hollers out an answer eliciting moans and groans.

I play them all the time but have to say I don't remember the answers to the obscure things.

Elevator, REALLY??? PROVE IT!

The do change the way they present at times like the famous faces. Sometimes they have a bunch of pics on the piano you identify, other times it's on the screen in the auditorium. I wouldn't know Britney Spears is she rang my front door bell so I teamed up with some young people. We won--because I was the only one in the game who recognized Margaret Thatcher! (People were arguing it was Queen Elizabeth.) Showed my age in that game!

Love Trivia games but the older I get the less I remember. If asked the same question I don't remember the correct answer I remember the incorrect answer I gave last time. Only this time I am more sure of it.

We were at a resort playing Family Feud. My BIL had the control for our team. The question was "Name a place you get to early to get a parking space?" My BIL answered "beach". Of course he was wrong and was teased about if for a long time. Flash Forward 4-5 years. Playing family feud again. BIL has control and of course he gets the same question. The words just fell out of his mouth "the beach". Said he was telling himself not to say it and it still came out of his mouth.

About the adult winning the SOS against an 11 year old. My story: Our family does a white elephant Holiday exchange. You know where you pick a gift or steal someone else's gift.

Gifts of little value. Only adults play. Children assist. Fetch the gifts, ooh & awww, etc. My son gets the game "Are you Smarter than a 5th grader" (It was a new show at the time). My 7 year old granddaughter was so excited. It was like Christmas day for her.

There are all kinda of gifts from gag gifts to gift cards to Dunkin Donuts, Olive Garden, Visa, to chocolate. It is a different BIL's turn (55 years old) and what does he take but the gift from the 7 year old. She was like a deflated balloon. No tears just sad.

I was so sure he was going to give her the game at the end of the night. When my son and his family are getting ready to leave this uncle says to my granddaughter. "I guess you wish you were taking this home and holds up the game". My granddaughter sadly says "I do but we weren't so lucky tonight". I thought now he gives it to her. Instead he says "No you weren't but I sure was".

Two years later I see that game on a shelve in his closet unopened. Never understood. What adult gets their jollies from seeing a child lose?
