Where to put Carryon?

Quick question for experienced cruisers. When we board the ship we will have left our suitcases to be delivered to our room, but we still want to keep a hold of our carry-ons. During the time before you are allowed to go to your room, what do you do with your carry-on? Do you take it with you to the Windjammer or pool while you wait or do they let you drop it off somewhere? Just curious.

Congratulations! :) We have always been able to go to our staterooms when we boarded the ship. It might be because we don't usually arrive at the pier among the first ones on. I would imagine it would be best to hang on to it otherwise.

They won't let you on before all the rooms are ready.

Not true. They will let you on as early as 12:00 and they ask you politely to refrain from going to your cabin before 2 pm. Until then you need to hang on to your own carry on.

Sorry that sounded somewhat smug. On our Conquest cruise on 6/12 this is what they did for us. RCL might be different, but operated the same way 2 yrs ago when we sailed w/them.

I'm usually on the ship by noonish, and go straight to my cabin. It's always been ready, even though they say the cabins won't be ready until after 1pm. If it's not ready, you can ask the cabin steward who will be in the area if you can drop your carry-on bag in your cabin anyway. Lots of folks have posted that this is what they do.:)

Thanks for the advice, if we need to we will ask a steward to take it to the room. I just had a hard time visualizing my pilot case next to me in the dining area or even the pool.

No, you don't ask a steward to take it to your cabin. YOU take it to your cabin.;) Your steward should be in the area of your cabin.

I though the name "carry-on" mean you "carry" it "onto" the ship=room yourself. Therefore, if the room is not ready and you are hanging out in the Windjammer or the pool area, the carry-on will be with you. You won't be able to find the steward if the room is not ready. He/she will be busy cleaning or preparing the room for you, bothering them with your "carry-on" will only slow the process down.:rolleyes:

We got on the ship about 11:45 and they were actually cleaning our room at the time and we turned around to leave and the room stewards said to come put whatever we needed to drop of in the room. This same thing happened on Royal Carribean also.

Your cabin steward will be cleaning like 15-20 cabins. He is off between the hours of noon and 5. Take post it notes to leave him a message if you want something done.. like extra towels or pillows.

If you drop your carry-ons in your stateroom, just make sure your steward is aware. You don't want your carry-ons to be sent to Lost & Found because they think they were left behind by your stateroom's previous occupants! :D

This is not a good idea. the cabins are not secured until after 1pm. and lots of carry-ons contain valubles. Make sure your cabin IS secured before you drop stuff and leave.

I think it depends on the ship. When we were on the Mariner of the Seas last year we were not allowed anywhere near the rooms. They had people at the elevator banks politely telling everyone to go to the buffet until they heard the announcement that their rooms were ready.

I've had it all of the ways as mentioned above. Sometimes the cabin is ready. Sometimes the entire hall is roped off until a certain time when all cabins are ready, sometimes we've been escorted right from the entry to our room by an attendant and introduced to our steward. We have also gone to our cabin to find it almost done and dropped off anything we didn't want to take to lunch with us. Never had any thoughts of security issues. Never had any problems. I guess you will just have to board, try to get to your cabin and see what happens. You will just have to play it by ear after that. Maybe, plan to carry as little as possible onboard with you incase you need to keep it for a few hours. All you'll need is your extreme valuables (camera, money, passports, documents). The rest can be checked in with the luggage, which will arrive at your stateroom - usually - before you do.
