Transatlantic from the UK -- smoking

Recommended Posts

Get the popcorn out.

Has anyone taken a transatlantic out of the UK who can tell me the smoking policy on board ships from the UK to the US? I think I've read that round-trip UK trips prohibit smoking inside. Does that apply to outbound UK sailings that end up in the US?

We did Harwich to Boston last August on Jewel and the smoking policy wasn't any different than sailing in the Caribbean.

If you were going from the US to Australia, then smoking would not be permitted anywhere inside the ship.

I can only tell you what my experience was. We took the Independence out of Southampton for an 11 night Canaries cruise. I have never seen so much smoking on a ship in all my life (and I'm Diamond, so I've been on the cruises). Maybe this particular cruise was an aberration and sailing out of the UK doesn't necessarily mean a ship full of chain-smokers, but beware...maybe others will chime in to say if ours was just an "off" cruise.

Can anyone else shed any light on this? I'm particularly interested in Independence OTS or one of the other Freedom class ships. Thanks!

We did the transatlantic from Southampton to Fort Lauderdale on the Indy last November. smoking was banned completely inside. Casino etc were all smoke free. It changed when the ship got to Fort Lauderdale & the US rules applied on the next cruise. Hope this helps :)

I'm doing a TA on Indy this coming November and I am hoping the same policy will apply!:D

We sailed Indy this Jan. and it was almost a smoke free ship. So she didn't revert to US smoking policies after her TA in 2012. There was no smoking in either the pub or the casino, both usually smoking venues. I only remember smoking allowed on one side of the pool deck, one side of the promenade deck and I think one side of Bolero's. None of the other bars were smoklng. Of course, there is smoking in the cigar club.

I hope the cruise from Brazil to Barcelona won't have lots of smoke. I think having designated areas with a large buffer zone helps. There should be good signs to say this is the buffer zone and someone enforcing it. A lot of people have sensitivity to smoke.

Sorry but unlikely as these 2 countries do not have the same strict no smoking in public areas, although Spain as an EU member should have.
