Flying from USA to Europe thru Toronto

I tried to do a search but no luck. Here are my questions.

1. Leaving CMH to Toronto then Europe. Would we have to get luggage and go thru customs and immigration in Toronto? Then again in Europe?

2. Coming back, do we get luggage and go thru customs and immigration in Toronto?

3. Do we go thu customs and immigration again in Columbus?

I don't have any def dates or cities yet as I want to know how it works in Toronto before I make a purchase. Right now Air Canada is a little cheaper than other airlines I have tired. I am trying different dates and cities (Rome or Paris) as prices are pretty high. (for next June or July)

Thanks for any help!!

We also flew Air Canada to Europe twice, now because it was a couple a' 100 $$$$$ less than anything out of JFK/Newark or Boston. We flew out of Hartford, CT. Luggage got checked in Hartford, we next saw it in Paris. When we arrived in Toronto, there was an exit for people entering Canada and there was an exit into the international departures concourse. Obviously, we went to the latter. THere was duty free shopping, dining options and shopping. After we left Hartford, there was no more security, check- in's, passport control, etc, etc until we arrived in Paris. Coming home, there was an exit for those entering Canada and one for those continuing on to the US. THere, we went through US immigration and customs. When we got back to Hartford, we just claimed our bags and walked out.

Just as Marco says...you clear US Immigration & Customs in Toronto, then the flight to Ohio is a domestic, just as if you were going to Cleveland.

When you get home say hi to my Uncle Bob & Aunt Winnie in Columbus.

We flew to FCO from CLE via YYZ (?) Toronto in June 2012. We opted for a longer layover in Toronto rather than risk missing our flight to Rome due to the Cleveland flight being a propjet with a connection time I felt was too close. We did have to go thru Canada customs, and my only disappointment was not being able to access the 10-Minute Nail Salon, which was in the USA area.

For an upcoming trip to Italy a friend of ours was booked thru Toronto using United ff miles (CLE-YYZ-FRA-FLR) and had a flight change that gave her only 80 minutes connect time in Toronto. I advised her to call United for alternatives and was very happy for her that a change to a different routing- CLE-IAD-FRA-FLR- was made without any hassle. She now has longer layovers which eliminated the stress of tight connections, especially in Toronto, and she arrives in FLR at the originally scheduled time, which coincides with our AA ff mile flights to FLR via Air Berlin.

We were pleasantly surprised by our Air Canada flight to Rome in economy. We felt the service was good and the seats a bit more spacious than we anticipated. (And our return trip via Air Canada from Brussels in First was even better!)

A handy little video from AC about connecting through YYZ - US -> Can and US -> International

Rather painless for the international onward pax - CBSA is a quick docs check, and bags through-checked. Printed version here: http://www.aircanada.com/en/travelinfo/airport/yyz_us_intl.html and printer-friendly .pdf here: http://www.aircanada.com/en/travelinfo/airport/images/yyz.pdf

For the return, here is your video walk through http://youtu.be/JS3pA8RGyC8. Bags are thru-checked and no formal CBSA inspection, and then you will pre-clear US CBP in Toronto. Trust this helps. Printer-friendly link is above.

Au plaisir. UA (and all Star Alliance carriers) operate from YYZ T1 as well, so cnxs through Pearson are quite painless. Barring delays at CBP, you'll have plenty of time to enjoy the Transborder Maple Leaf lounge, or the concourse. map --> http://maps.torontopearson.com/gtaa/t1UsaL2_desktop.jsp
