Cassicruiser Posted September 6, 2013 #26 Share Posted September 6, 2013 Yes, and sometimes there is no low cost carrier available at all (Canberra), as they do not operate out of every airport.:D I didn't know that - you'd think there'd be some low cost flights to and from the nation's capital!! Oh, and with the fees, if you book through Jetstar and pay with the POLI payment option (linked to direct debit) there are no booking fees either. I don't think Tiger offer that as a payment option. Because most of the traffic is for the government market, and they have ties to the main programs (QF in particular), there's not enough untied demand for a competitor. For some reason, Joe Tourist doesn't find a lot of desire to fly there. :)

We like it, it has plenty to offer and I hope it continues to as well. BTW, a Peruvian art collection will be the next big exhibition in the national Gallery, replacing the Turner from the Tate.:D

But your link proves the point: "Tourism Research Australia's International Visitor Survey (IVS) has revealed Canberra's highest year ending June figure since 2001, with 180,380 international visitors recorded for 2012-13, up from 163,375 in 2011-12" That's just 500 visitors a day! Given there are about 30 flights from Sydney alone with QF and Virgin which is about 4500 seats, plus another 17 from Melbourne, which is about 2500 seats, then you have other cities on top AND not all tourists come by air (you have train, rental car, and coach), you can see that: a) tourism supports a very small number of traffic b) that traffic can be readily handled by the existing carriers, so it'd be a loss for anyone else to try to pick up the remaining tourists. They'd have to compete on price just to get any volume, and then run at a loss without any higher priced fares to help sustain the business. So endeth the economics lesson. :D
