99Cruiser Posted September 10, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 10, 2013 For those in Auckland, how is the Skycity hotel? Is it a nice property and is it close to other things? Any information that could be provided would be great. Thank you
Kstornado Posted September 11, 2013 #2 Share Posted September 11, 2013 Would also like to know about the Crowne Plaza.
Kiwi Kruzer Posted September 11, 2013 #3 Share Posted September 11, 2013 Both are good hotels. Crown Plaza is Mid City so a bit of walking to get anywhere. Sky City has the Casino and many restaurants attached. Also in the Sky City complex is the Sky Grand which is a bit more upmarket. One block over from Sky City is Rydges which caters to business travellers and gets good reviews.
happybos Posted September 11, 2013 #4 Share Posted September 11, 2013 We have decided to splash out and stay at the Sky City Grand for the night before our cruise - starting our holiday off with a bang!

Kstornado Posted September 12, 2013 #6 Share Posted September 12, 2013 Do you have a recommendation for a better located hotel? We are getting off a ship & taking a 6 hour tour of Auckland & the environs. We will then have later that day & evening & most of the next day to do some sightseeing before we leave to fly back home. We are staying in Auckland for 3 days after the cruise and looking for ideas where to stay, things to do, things to see. How far in the airport to the Sky City if we decide to stay there. We are most likely going to rent a car so we can go anywhere.

gcorgain Posted September 13, 2013 #9 Share Posted September 13, 2013 We are tentatively staying at the Sofitel. Any comments about this hotel? Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app
Bowie MeMe Posted September 13, 2013 #10 Share Posted September 13, 2013 We are staying at Crowne Plaza and do not have plans for a car at this point. Staying 2 days before flying to Wellington for cruise and will be back for 2 days before flying to Tahiti and back to US. Crowne Plaza and ability to walk or small taxi ride to places we would want to see -- is this a problem? Major sightseeing is after cruise when we have a car and flights to cover 2 1/2 weeks. To those thinking to rent a car. Remember that for US citizens the driving is on our "wrong" side and parking fees at hotels are very high. Also need to consider where you pick up and drop off after using the car.
rugbypopsie Posted September 13, 2013 #11 Share Posted September 13, 2013 I have stayed st the Sebel...great location and washer and drier in room. Restaurants and bars downstairs..right on waterfront. Sir Stamford, was tired and grubby with rude staff..hopefully has improved. Sue
Rare MMDown Under Posted September 13, 2013 #12 Share Posted September 13, 2013 Because we had a hire car, we stayed in the following hotels, with kitchens, washing machines, etc and free car parking - Quality Hotel, Parnell (Barrycourt) near the beautiful Parnell Rose Garden and close to the interesting Auckland War Memorial Museum Auckland Takapuna Oaks, Bayswater, which is waterfront, free ferry ride to CBD Auckland, free internet. gsully Posted September 15, 2013 #13 Share Posted September 15, 2013 This past March when we were in Auckland waiting for the Solstice to cruise New Zealand and Australia, we stayed at the Hilton Auckland on the pier where the ship docks when it comes in. We took an all day tour of Auckland including the west coast rain forests and beaches and another tour to Hobbiton. The Hilton was a little pricey, but a great place to stay with access to the shuttles going out of the harbor and the many restaurants around. Watching the ship arrive and dock was exciting because we could almost reach out and touch it since it was directly outside of our room. Of course boarding was a snap.
