Who needs cruise ship passengers? Send in the Navy...

Recommended Posts

Townsville has just opened their new cruise ship and Naval facility.

A friend sent this link from the local Bulletin where its states that the sailors spend 4 to 5 times that of a cruise ship passenger, enjoying "the fruits of Townsville"....

they foget to mention that a Naval vessel is berthed for 4 or 5 days, while a cruise ship is in for only a few hours...

US Navy ship USS Chosin to dock at Townsville's new wharf

AMERICAN Navy ship the USS Chosin is coming to visit Townsville on Monday just days after the official opening of Wharf 10, and the 400 visiting sailors are expected to inject about $200,000 into the local economy during their four-day visit.

The average Navy ship visitor spends $400-$500 a day four times that of a cruise ship customer.

"Those sailors will be out looking to enjoy the fruits of Townsville," Mr Kippin said.

"The sailors don't have much opportunity to spend money on the water so in a place as welcoming as Townsville we're sure they'd love to enjoy our hospitality.

"Using that well-worn analogy, build it and they will come, and that's what will happen."

Over the next 15 months an impressive tally of 15 cruise ships and 20 Royal Australian Navy ships have already been confirmed to visit.
