Paying for an upgrade?

I was wondering if when paying for an upgrade the price is based on the current price for your cabin category or the price you actually paid.

The difference between our balcony cabins and mini-suites is only $50 now on the website (cruise leaves in a bit over one week) but we paid significantly less than the current price.

I am assuming that the difference would be from what we actually paid but thought it couldn't hurt to ask the experts :)

You would pay the difference between what you have paid fohe current cabin and the current price of the new cabin. Youdo not get any credit for increases (or decreases) in the fare for you cabin

 

This is way past final payment date. Usually the great pricing seen at this point is for new bookings only which would mean canceling the existing reservation with the financial penalty involved.

 

Since there can be exceptions, the "expert" to ask would be your Travel Agent or Princess.

Bill is right. Most likely, the fares are for new bookings only so you would have to cancel your cruise, take the penalty and submit a claim to your insurance for what isn't refunded. Plus, you'd pay the going rate for a new booking.

I'm just asking about that part in red… does that only work if you have cancel for any reason insurance?

Yes. And, it's refunded as credit, not cash.

 

Earlier this year, we'd booked a B2B from Beijing > Whittier > Vancouver. After final payment, as we were making plans what to do in port in Alaska, we realized we were paying a huge premium for this segment. Princess fares were half of what we were paying and we couldn't get it adjusted. So, we canceled. Between Princess refunding most of the fare back and insurance covering the rest, we were out of pocket for only the cost of the insurance. The refund was as credit on our accounts which we then applied to our Royal T/A fare. It worked out because at final payment for the Royal cruise , we each had just a relatively small amount due.
