Hi everyone

 

I am looking at booking a cruise next year from civitavecchia but would like to spend the day before in Rome. Which is the best airport for a visit to Rome? Then what is the best, and cheapest way to get to the port the net day/ Any help greatly appreciated.

You will want to fly to the - Leonardo da Vinci airport of Rome airport.

 

From there you can take a taxi into Rome.

 

From Rome you could arrange a private car to take you to the port or for the less expensive option take the train.

Train is cheapest, but you will have to be able to manage your bags.

You will fly into Aeroporto Inter****onale Leonardo da Vinci di Fiumicino (FCO). From there take the Leonardo Express to Termini station in Rome, it's 14 Euro per person one way. Buy your tickets at a Tobacci in the airport or one of the ticket machines before boarding. You MUST validate the ticket at one of the yellow boxes by the tracks prior to boarding. (Slip it in and give it a bit of a turn and it will validate.) The train is non-stop between FCO and Termini, about a 30 minute ride. It was clean and comfortable, but there was no baggage service, so if you can't handle your bags or navigate steps, this will not be a good option. We felt very safe on that train and didn't feel like pickpockets were a problem.

 

Getting off in Termini is a different story, pickpockets were in abundance, so mind your belongings.

 

A cab is a flat 48 Euro for up to four passengers. A small tip is expected, maybe round up to 50 Euro. You will need to have Euro. I would change some money before leaving the US--but then again I don't like arriving in any foreign country that doesn't widely use US currency (ie the Bahamas) without local currency.

 

There are any number of hotels within walking distance of Termini, some better than others. Keep in mind that generally speaking, European hotels are pretty sparse unless you stay at a "luxury" hotel, and even then their idea of luxury is typically more in line with a Hilton than a Four Seasons.

 

From Rome to the port, again take the train from Termini. There are several options, the commuter trains are the most crowded and slowest (an hour), the Intercity and express trains don't run daily and have more limited service--they are about 40 minutes. It's a 4-5 block walk from the train station to the port, there are shuttles available for a small charge.

 

A taxi will run approximately 130 Euro.

Google Bob's Limo Rome. Have used them several times and they are great, a shared van from Rome to the port was 80 Euros + tip for 2 of us. They pick up at hotel and drop off at your ships gangway. happy cruising

cheapest is bus - there is an express from FCO to Termini. cost 4Euro per person

you can take the local train considerably cheaper (5 euro) than the Leonardo express (11 euro)
