Poor TV Channel Selections on RCL

You all are missing the point here... How much money do you spend on drinks while you are in your cabin? How much money do you lose in the casino or playing bingo in your cabin?? How much money is spent at the spa from your cabin, do much shopping from your cabin?

Bottom line Royal does not want you in your cabin and they dang sure are not going to give any more reason to be in your cabin not spending money by giving away free T.V. Best you could ever hope for is pay per view movies!

Ok sorry. That makes a lot more sense.

Oh boy ain't that the truth. I'd just settle for a different episode of Castle each night!!!

Although I did get to see Chris Hemsworth quite often in the evenings one cruise when Thor was played over and over again. :D Then, low and behold-again when the Avengers was on.:D Mmmmmmm Mnnnnnnnn!!!

I agree the TV is awful....I do not go to the shows I eat and go to my room.......nothing on TV.....it is not the signal..........It is that they have cut their channels it went the way of the chocolates on the pillows. Last year (12 months ago) we had great TV....CNN...Fox....and could keep up with the news...weather...and a few opinion shows. This has happened in the last few months.........maybe 6. I too would like to have a line with some decent channels.

I've already warned my parents that they will need to download some TV shows to watch because all there was to watch was Boomerang/Cartoon Network, TBS, E! in 4 different languages, 4 channels playing the same movie in 4 different languages, CNN, and maybe Fox News.

I like the TV On Demand idea.:D Think they could make that happen by March 9?

This would be the last thing I would notice, we bring our own entertainment....got a laptop, tablet, Kindle Fire or ipad? we always bring ours to download videos/pics while cruising. We bought an external WiFi hard drive (palm sized) and recorded all our movies on it, and it allows up to 4 people with 4 different devices to watch different movies simultaneously. Don't use it much except on the plane, but its available if we want some late night snooze viewing and it fits in DH's backpack.

On our October EN cruise, we had CNN International but no Fox News (Guest Relations said that they never had Fox news); Our last cruise on FR had both news channels. Wonder what stations they will have on the Jan. 12, 2014 FR cruise that we are on. Will have lots of books to read on my Kindle but as I work for a State Senator, it would be good to know what's going on so I won't have to do so much catching up.

Hey I didn't know about that (and I thought I was an electronics guru!). What is that device called? I'll find it in a minute on google but in case there's several I'd be curious to know which one you have.

I could save money by getting ipads with less memory with a gadget like that.

I also would like "on demand" shows like cable TV does, with the feed being directly from the ship rather than from satellite -- that would eliminate "poor signal", plus we could start the show when we wanted.

So there you have it. This could be the new RCCL package that you can purchase- on demand TV. Even though most people don't spend a lot of time in their room, I bet quite a few would purchase a TV package that included some Sports, Movies, TV shows, cartoons for the kids, etc so they could have something to watch while they are in the rooms.

I would only hope this wouldn't take away the few sporting events they do play live in the bars and I assume it wouldn't since they do want you in the bars spending money on drinks.

Who is the maker and what is the model # for the WiFi Hard Drive. That would be great for travel.

Its a Seagate Wireless Plus model# 1AYBA2. 1 terra bite hard drive. It was great on our Alaska cruise as we went with another couple..on the flight up all 4 of us were watching 4 different movies. I think it was about $150 or so. Best Buy has it. My DH is a tech and owns his own Hardware consultation business so he's up with all the newest gadgets.

Well, this is certainly one area that Carnival has it all over RCI. We have been on several Carnival cruises and they have excellent TV channels.

Just got back last month from our latest Carnival cruise and every day we had NBC, CBS, ABC CNN Fox and I don't remember the rest. It was really nice in the morning while we were getting ready for breakfast to listen to the Today show. And if there was a night that we were in our room early we had TV stations to watch. Even watched Survivor on that cruise. It was rough so we retired to our room after dinner. I don't cruise to watch TV but it is very nice to have choices for those times that you just want to take a break and relax in your room.

RCI- take a lesson from Carnival.

DrD-soccerdad is right. I meant we, as my family all fall asleep to the TV on and it stays on all night. Terrible habit but actually-we wake up if it goes off!!:(

Trust me, I know how bad the TV is on Royal.

Dont feel bad. I cannot fall asleep without the TV either. We set the timer for an hour or 2 so it isnt on all night. Our cable company has channels that are just all different styles of music and while the music plays they show facts about the artist playing. We play that sometimes when we go to bed.

We could never be those people that say good night turn off the light and go to sleep.

No Faux News, no problem. CNN International is OK, better than CNN in the US in terms of actual reporting of news.

Would be nice to have increased range/genre of music selections, even if they did not have the accompanying videos. Nice to have something on in background when getting dressed.

Oh thank god someone else gets it.:o
I used to do the timer thing and found out the silence is what woke me up!!!
TNT or USA here go all night long and at least different stories every night. Once you've seen the Castle episode on board-you watch it all week long!!!

(Guest Relations said that they never had Fox news);

I had Fox news on the Majesty a year ago.......that is the station I watch each night.....(my choice, no one said it had to be yours) This was only for a period of months. Having been on 13 cruises in the last 2 years I know........I watch this station every night. If not mistaken MSNBC was also on. Could have been a trial for 6 months or so....but for sure it was on at 9PM even in Nassau. dealer Edited by dealer9296

I've used the PQI Air Drive for similar situations. It uses memory cards instead of a hard disk, but it's great for sharing movies over WiFi (and 32GB memory cards are so cheap these days).
We all know that we do not go on a cruise to stay in our cabins and watch TV. We are hardly ever in the cabin during the day or evening. However, when someone is ill, then it leaves little choice.
Just off the Oasis and my poor DH had a bad couple of days and wanted to rest in bed. Alas, read a book or watch TV. Well, no ABC, NBC, CBS,FX, Fox News and the list goes on. Instead the options were RCL advertising and constant reruns of Castle on TNT. We know that RCL could add more channels to the line up and Sat signals are not a problem in the ocean. I would also like the Weather Channel available to know what I am in for getting home. I mean, I get the Weather Channel everywhere I travel. Are you listening RCL, we need more choices on the TV.
Does this bother anyone else?
International broadcast rules prohibit networks from airing certain content outside of the United States. This includes most of what we all watch at home. That leaves the selection of channels available on cruise ships to just a few, including international news stations.

It's not a political statement:rolleyes:

This is a thread about what TV programming people DO and DO NOT want available in their room. Don't twist my words into something they are not. If you are unsure of anything I've said just ask me to clarify my statement, I gladly will.

Of all the web forums I participate in this one is amongst both the most useful for information, and the most rude/judgmental if you don't play along with the masses. Dissenting opinions not welcomed on Cruise CRITIC. Go figure. Edited by LMaxwell

I go on cruises to *avoid* all that horrible aggravating current events talk!

That being said, I don't think it would kill them to work in a movie channel (even ppv) or a rotation of laid back programming like you can get for cheap on Netflix. It doesn't have to be current cable to be entertaining.

a bit off topic but in a way it's related. All their tvs have closed captioning but none of the channels are closed captioned. We don't sit in our cabins all day either, but before dinner, or when we first wake up...maybe after a nap we may watch something. My partner can't enjoy it because she's deaf. The last two cruises none of the channels had caption. This was after we confirmed the tv was fine, it was just the signal.
