Stewards Entering Rooms While Occupied

I also had something similar happen on my last cruise. Our steward was a bit odd... the second day he chased me down in the hallway to loudly let me know he hadn't taken our laundry bag (we're platinum) and then berated me saying I filled out the form wrong. I went in the room and he followed, all the while quite angry with me. I showed him that we were platinum and had filled that out on the form and he then grabbed the bag, said he made a mistake and left. A little odd, but fine.

Then as the cruise progressed, this guy walked into our room without knocking on at least three other occasions. Once I was changing and the guy walked in, stood there in the hall, and instead of apologizing and ducking out began to ask me 20 questions about what time we'd be leaving the room for dinner, how long we'd be gone, etc. I was standing there in bra and panties trying to cover up with a sheet.

It was the only time in 14 cruises I've been uncomfortable with a steward and a bit bothered by having him in my room. The room (our first suite) was probably also the least clean I've ever had on a cruise.

I know they aren't all like this, but just goes to show there's a bad apple or two in every bunch.

would have thought he would have been so embarrased at walking in on you dressing he would have run away. Second time he walked in without knocking would have complained about him,

I did not say he woke us up 40 minutes prior to the muster drill. It took me awhile to figure out that we were not late. He actually woke me up 50 minutes early. Yes I can make it to a muster station in 5 minutes.:D

I can only comment on what was posted, not what was meant to be posted.

That would have been my thought, too, but he obviously didn't care. The guy seemed to have a chip on his shoulder about something anyway. We did voice our opinions onboard and he at least didn't walk in on us the last few days.

On a good note, though.. also on the second day I was going down the hall when the steward in the next section of rooms stops me, asks how I've been, and remembers when he was our room steward on the Liberty almost two full years prior and even what room we were in. I never went up and down that hall without him stopping me and saying, "hello miss j...., how are you, how was your day?" etc. Our actual steward (the weird one) I don't think ever actually knew our names... he just wanted to complain. I wished we had been a few rooms down!

I'm wondering if we had the same great steward on Liberty (Empress) that you had..Knew our names bf we boarded and talked and interacted the whole week, only walked in once on the last day (disembark) bc we were in no hurry. We also sleep later and he never bothered us the whole week. Need to have more like him! Make sure you use your snoozin card.

If they didnt come and clean everyday ppl would complain that the rooms were not getting clean... ppl just complain. Ours we would just say if the crusin sign is up. come on in but knock 2 times first. Ours always did this did this. Just be nice in the beginning and tell them what you want and things usually work out. :)

I don't think OP was wrong to be irritated or complaining for no reason. Its her vacation and if she wanted to sleep she should have that right. If she expressed her desire and placed the Do Not Disturb sign, then she should not have been disturbed.

That happen to me while I was on the Ecstasy. I can't say it was the Cabin steward fault, because I heard some kind of knocking but I didn't realize it was the door. At first I though it was my BF making the noise. Then next thing you know the cabin steward walked in. I'm lying in the bed in my undies but I had the robe on, and my BF was in his undies shaving in the bathroom. After that experience I made sure if I heard something I would check the door.

We have seen headwaiters in DR that we have had dinners with but somehow never a room steward.

Good advice. Thanks. I just assumed putting up a Snoozin card and dead bolting the door would be enough to convey the message. That is what we always did on our 14 prior cruises and it usually worked out. Next time I will try to be even more specific.

Bring a door stop with you, no one can enter with it shoved under the door. I read where the steward can override the dead bolt to get into your room. I can see that for safety reasons. The very first day that we board, we tell the steward not to make up our room in the evenings. At least we know we're not going to be bothered when we have wine on our balcony.

You read wrong! The cabin steward CANNOT override the dead bolt...I know this from experience :o. On an NCL ship, I was locked out on my balcony very early one morning, and had to wait until one of my neighbors woke up & came out to notify someone of my predicament. About 20 minutes later SECURITY came & let me in. They told me they originally sent the cabin steward, but my door was dead-bolted...so they needed to call security to open the door. ;)

I don't believe in suffering in silence when things happen that I don't like! I would have told the steward directly that we would let him know when we are out of the room and that he should NOT call or knock at any time!!

I would then have the Snoozin sign up AND the door deadbolted. IF he did not comply with my request to stop harassing me I would have gone to guest services immediately! There is no point in spending the whole cruise annoyed! Guest Services cannot help you if they don't know about the problem!!

Yes, I read that but since everyone came on calling the OP stupid for not having the DND card, the thread, again got deleted. The steward came in later in the evening to check on problems they reported days earlier. It was the usual Carnival can do no wrong, privacy doesn't matter, at least I am not home in my own bed mentality. I often inform my steward about NOT entering or even cleaning my cabin in case my kids are in. I use the DND sign but after hours with the deadbolt, I would never think it's necessary.

I am not sure the deal with the quick tap, tap, or knock, knock, before entering. I knock on my kids door, knock again, wait a second or two, three sometimes then enter. I stiill get the scream maaaam:D

I was a housekeeper in Disney World for an internship and I know with that job we were required to start cleaning rooms at 8 am, and only have a certain amount of time to finish them. It was always very uncomfortable having to knock on doors early, but if we waited until later there is no way all of the rooms would get done!

If there is a Do Not Disturb sign up then there is no excuse for him to have barged in... but if it is not up we were required to knock to see if it is okay for us to start cleaning. Often times stewards are given way too many rooms to clean for the amount of time given.. meaning its hard to work around the guests schedules when they are all in their rooms all day.

It may not not seem like a big deal to make the steward wait until noon to clean, but when every room wants to wait until noon that leaves the steward with 20+ rooms to clean in 3 hours.

Please just try and have some sympathy for them.. their job is very hard and I am pretty sure anytime they do barge in, it is not intentional, just trying to get their jobs done.

OP...I am so sorry this happend to you. I will say that you are much nicer then I would have been. After the 2nd time, the steward and I would have had a nice long discussion along with HIS supervisor on the merits of knocking and then waiting....for at least a minute or two before even trying to enter. I have never had this happen to me. I guess I have been lucky in a way. Most times my stewarts learn my sleeping habits and adjust to them. I am up early on port days and sleep a bit later - not past 9am on sea days....

I want to add that on 6 cruises....all on Carnival...I have never missed a Safety breifing and I have never been asked for my name or cabin number or S&S card.

So many people think that dead bolting the lock or using a doorstop would do the trick:confused:

A cabin usually has more than one occupant and just because one wants to rest or sleep change or shower that the other (Others) are going to hang around the cabin and wait!

I sometimes go to the casino after late dinner and my wife likes to relax in the cabin so deadbolt or doorstop doesnt work for me or her especially if she falls asleep!

As for complaining to G/S  My wife had a late night intrusion by a ships plumber at almost midnight for a blocked sink that was never reported by us or was ever blocked the entire cruise!

Complaints to guest services were answered with "your wife just a bad dream"

Answers from head of Security were "Impossible it didnt happen it was a bad dream" until we insisted on CCTV be viewed which did in fact show the plumber going in the cabin without knocking just before midnight!

This was not carnival but P&O,same company though.

We spent 3 separate occasions being requested to attend security for talks mainly should I say involving how my wife's statement would affect the plumbers life, job, cruise career and family in his home country.

We were not allowed to view the CCTV along with security and were refused a copy.

Final explanation from Cruise head office: The plumber forgot to fix our sink during normal hours and didnt want to get into trouble with his supervisor because it was on a daily plumbing service request document submitted by room steward so decided to do it very late at night:rolleyes:

We requesteda copy of the service document and was told it was long gone lol

Hate to break it to ya, buddy, but.. most people are up and around by 8!

By 8:30 there are hundreds of us lined up to disembark the ship to go ashore and explore.

I'm assuming you hit the cabin to crash sometime well after midnight?

.

I don't care to tell you. It is not any of your, mine, or anyone else's business what anyone does on there vacation if it don't hurt you or the public.

We had this experience on the Breeze in April. One knock, and the key going in at the same time.:eek: Thank GOD when this happened, we all had clothes on.:o:o That poor steward would not be the same man/woman, today. lol. All joking aside, use the Deadbolt!!!! After that happening twice, mostly while on the balcony, we always put the deadbolt on. And if there IS a way to get through the deadbolt, you can bet your arse, we'd be speaking with the Hotel Director.

We had a similar problem with a steward who didn't seem to understand that he should not open the door WHILE knocking on Ecstasy. I wonder if there is something going on with that particular ship. After speaking with the steward, my next stop was guest services. When I pointed out to them that we had told the room steward we had late dining and that this was occurring while we were getting dressed for dinner (around 7-7:30) and that I had three teenaged daughters in the room who didn't feel comfortable, the situation was immediately resolved. Guest services looked horrified and we had no further issues.

Note - we DID have the deadbolt on and the door still opened, so maybe on some ships housekeeping can override this - and having worked in housekeeping all through college, I fully understand the time constraints and the potential awkwardness the job entails - that said, there is a reason you knock, say "housekeeping" and knock again before cracking the door to say "housekeeping". That never happened with our steward. It was "tap tap" open the door - so quickly that one time my 16yo was standing at the closet and couldn't get to the door fast enough - we were fortunate that only one of my daughters got caught changing (and she was in the bathroom, so he didn't see anything) when this happened.
