Mofongo!

Will be visiting the port of San Juan in February and, more than anything, I want to have authentic mofongo. I definitely prefer a homestyle spot over a tourist type place. Any recommendations for a restaurant would be appreciated .... and if its walking distance (or otherwise convenient) to the cruise ship pier, all the better. Thank you :)

My sister lives in San Juan so I'm there often, but for the life of me, I just don;t understand the appeal of Mofongo! There is a little place called Punto de Vista which is inexpensive and good, two blocks to the right (standing on the pier) of the Sheraton Casino.

Are you kidding me? That's one of the main reasons I travel to PR -- LOL!

Punto de Vista's Mofongo is great. If you are there for more days -- at the kiosks in Luquillo they're even better!

Thank you all! I can't help but say that great minds think alike :) I cannot wait to try the real deal; I am so excited. I looked up websites and Trip Advisor reviews on both and both look fantastic. One question though, I couldn't quite tell for sure if Café Manolin is open for dinner? We are only in port for a half day so I have to choose between these two. Or .... maybe we could order one plate and split at both places ..... oh I like how this is evolving!

what does the word mofongo mean? I have seen photos of it on trip advisor, and looks like it could be yummy, but just curious if the actual word has a meaning. I will be in San Juan in November, and would like to try this too.:)

Sorry, disregard my silly question folks...I just googled it, and should have done so before. it is a fried plantain concoction mixed with various ingredients/and probably roots from Africa, like Fufu/per wikipedia. Still sounds good to me though.

Metropol has a good one: click here

but the BEST one we have had was in Condado at Cafe del Angel - there is no devoted website but here is some good info: click here

I had it at a little restaurant near the Courtyard Miramar. Don't have the name handy.

Had it in November at Punta de Vista. Delicious.

Sadly, plantains apparently do not like me nearly as much as I like them. I had extreme GI discomfort all night. Both times. I thought the first time it was just travel stress. Apparently not.

Next time I'm in San Juan will be Halloween night. Not sure what I'll do for dinner that night!

I can't wait to try some of these! We have an awesome little Puerto Rican food stand in a local Farmer's Market that makes killer mofongo. Somehow it's even better on the Island!

I am also hoping to find some pastelillos de chapin, but I understand that chapin is now in short supply and they have been using ray meat in it's place with a near identical flavor.
