Smoking policy on Holland

As a non-smoker, I'm just fine with the smoking policy on the ship and everywhere it is and is not permitted EXCEPT for verandah smoking. When they stop permitting verandah smoking, I will never again ask for smoking changes on HAL ships. :) I don't wish to make the ships totally smoke free. I don't think that fair.

All I would expect at the point is enforcement.

One of my great joys of cruising is, weather permitting, enjoying a fine glass of wine with a good cigar for 45 minutes, once a day, on the verandah. For this, I have been tagged an "addict" by Aussiepair.

Let me propose another compromise knowing full well that "compromise" is not in the vocabulary of tyrants. No smoking on verandahs while the ship is in port or anchored; no smoking in the interior of the ship, including the casino; smoking on verandahs permitted for one designated hour between 8am - 12pm and one hour between 1pm - 7pm while the ship is at sea.

Don't worry about it - he called me an addict too, in another thread.;) I won't repeat what he called his smoking neighbour but it wasn't nice nor was it relevant.

And this would be enforced by the same crew that enforces the dress code in the MDR

Thank you! Sometimes I am scared to post anything because I am belittled and made to feel stupid. Or people lash out at me for commenting on a thread and state my feelings. I have said several times that that is what CC is for. It's not just for questions. I'm not pointing fingers at anyone but some people can be so hateful and mean.

I find that some folks just disagree with everything that is posted even though it makes common sense. When posters disbelieve and challenge everything I'm not sure why posters would think that they would be embraced. It seems that some posters just like to get under peoples skin or stir the pot.

I actually think this a good proposal and would willingly agree to it. :)

THIS is the sticking point. Many of us have commented HAL doesn't seem to enforce their rules at anything resembling a consistent basis.

We had a balcony on the NA...a cabin on the stern. The people next to us smoked constantly. So on our recent cruises, we booked a lanai and an ocean view. No sense paying for a balcony when we could hardly use it.

Was smoking permitted on the Promenade Deck outside your lanai stateroom?

Never smelled any smoke...nor saw anyone smoking a cigarette.

Great! :) As an aside, on my recent 14-Day Ryndam cruise, there were NO hanging ash/butt pots on the railings around the (Upper) Promenade/Wraparound Deck, nor did I see a single smoker on this deck during the entire cruise! :) Do you think that the hanging ash/butt pots have been removed from the railings on the Promenade Decks of ALL HAL ships?

I can report that for my cruise that ended today, I never saw one hanging ashtray on the Promenade Deck of the Zuiderdam. None. And we saw no one smoking there. I can also report there were no signs saying "No Running" on the Promenade Deck. Although with all the deck chairs, lifeboat mechanics, etc. on that deck, I can't imagine running there anyway.

NCL also allows smoking on the verandas. My daughter just returned from a cruise where her one desire was to sit outside, enjoy her morning coffee, and then later in the day a book and the ocean view. She had a smoker who smoked all day long and she couldn't use the veranda at all.

Maasdam always had ashtrays hanging off the railing on Lower Promenade. Great to read they have been removed. Good news.

There were none that I could see on the port side, Sail. Can't speak for starboard.

And I can also report that on my recent Ryndam cruise, there was 10" high, red coloured (painted) signage, NO JOGGING, at four locations; two forward & two aft, on the (Upper) Promenade/Wraparound Deck! ;) I never observed anyone jogging/running, (thankfully), contrary to this painted signage! :)
