Quantum Reveal Review

Recommended Posts

Traditionally, dress codes on board a ship pertained to all public areas of the ship after 6 or 7 PM, not just the dining areas. The November TA will be my first time on RCI.

Not sure which lines you've sailed before but that has not been the case on Royal for as long as I've been sailing the line. Maybe back in the olden days...? Lots of people change after dinner on formal nights. I usually don't, but it's quite common to change.

That's a shame. Makes for a degraded shipboard experience.

A whole new reason for people to opine... Thoughts/concerns/complaints about the Dress code is no longer relegated to the dining rooms...

A cruise ship is an ocean based resort, and like resorts on land there are people dressed in all manner of formality. It doesn't bother me as I don't concern myself with other people and their idea of what their vacation should be. I enjoy my vacation and dress how I want to dress...some days nicer than others, but I don't let someone wearing shorts around the resort (floating or not) negatively impact my enjoyment.

This ship may not be for cruise traditionalists. As AG said, it's designed to provide the cruiser with much more flexibility. It's about choice. And the good news for traditionalists is there is a choice...there are 20 other ships in the fleet that follow the traditional cruising model.

After spending some time reading over the announcement materials/watching the Google+ Hangout, I'm excited about the change and look forward to hearing the thoughts from the first set of lucky cruisers. Will there be kinks/bugs in the execution? Sure, but I'll reserve final judgement until I try it for myself.

With all the restaurants describing a dress code, and most of them some form of casuality, it appears that RCI is defining dress to be a dining thing, and not an evening thing. This means that every evening, there will be hundreds if not thousands of people roaming the ship looking like rubbish. Traditionally, dress codes on board a ship pertained to all public areas of the ship after 6 or 7 PM, not just the dining areas. The November TA will be my first time on RCI. It remains to be seen what the actual experience will be like, under the circumstances.

Yes, that seems to be the experience on Cunard, which is now an outlier among cruise lines for their traditions. Some people stay dressed up past dinner, many dont. I for one do not as it is uncomfortable to wear formal clothes all night. I'm sure if I could afford bespoke wardrobe, it would be different.

On my last two cruises I didnt even bother to pack my formal wear because I just didnt feel like putting up with the hassle. I ate in the windjammer on those nights. And I still walked around the ship and went to the shows in casual clothes.

If you are looking for an experience where people stay formal all night, Royal is probably not the right fit. According to your statement, I am going to be one of those who looks like rubbish. (I am on the maiden voyage with you). You are entitled to that opinion, and I will not be offended by it. I am just going to make the statement that if seeing people dressed casually in the evenings while walking around the ship is going to offend your senses and degrade your vacation, you should probably stick to Cunard.

I second this. I'll be on the maiden voyage and I will be rubbish most nights! I wear a suit and tie to work everyday and I go on cruises to not feel like I'm at work. Don't get me wrong, I'll bring a suit and tie to wear a couple of nights - but I don't subscribe to an all-night dress code.

I like to look nice for dinner and am generally better dressed than most but it doesn't bother me. And, if you haven't noticed, no formal nights on Quantum - so this may be the wrong ship for you, if not the wrong line.

Two questions I have:

I was able to see the menus for each of the complimentary restaurants on the website. My question is: Are those menus just a sample and they will change nightly, so if you want to dine formal every night there will be a changing menu? Or is it the same menu every night?

I tend to dress formal every night. We only wear our gown/tuxedo on "formal nights" but we do tend to dress elegant each night. For us it's part of the fun (myself in cocktail dress or a silk pant suit and husband in jacket and tie). I'm assuming this restaurant will be formal in the flexible formal that we see on formal nights? ie: cocktail dress or formal pant suit are as acceptable as a full length gown/jacket & tie are as acceptable as a tux?

Thanks!

1) Same menu every night.

2) This hasn't been confirmed yet to my knowledge, but I assume they will keep the same definition of formal that is currently posted on the RCI website.

We'll have to see. I've wanted to try this line for a while. Since the Quantum maiden voyage is a crossing (I prefer crossings to port cruises) and ends in Bayonne (I live in northern NJ), it would be the right trip.

They just updated the website with the list of free/up charge restaurants and the menus: http://www.royalcaribbean.com/quantumoftheseas/dining/restaurants/

Thanks for that link, now I'm hungry!! The restaurants look amazing. I did notice Premium Selections in the Silk menu. I wonder if they are going to charge for those? It's a complimentary restaurant but the lobster tail and filet are Premium choices. Either way I think I'd try their lobster. Silk looks like a wonderful place.

Then may I humbly suggest that you stick with Britannia and leave Quantum to the rest of us who are pretty excited about this new venue.

Amen! I am more than excited. I wasn't going to book either of these ships for a while, until after I heard reviews from CC people who sailed them, but now I really really want to sail on one or the other.

Not to steal your thunder, but I do have the food porn. I'm in the process of labeling all the different dishes. Stay tuned!

Thanks for the pictures. Now I'm even hungrier than before. Mint crusted lamb chops .... yummmmm

Well said, I agree with all of the above. I'll be waiting to hear from the Quantum inaugural sailers about their experiences but the ship sounds great to me. If it didn't, I'd just sail Oasis and Allure over and over. Love those ships. With Royal, there is something for everyone.

The concept is to dress how you want every night besides The Grande requiring formal attire. Obviously people are not allowed in casual but dress how you normally would going to the MDR.

i as well totally agree with your statements....instead of all the down comments out there if you're booked on her then give it a try and if you're not willing to allow change and growth then please go to a different ship. the're are plenty of cruisers out the willing to take the room you would be giving up.

Where is that darned "like" button when you need it! :) I have no idea why people concern themselves so with what everyone else does.

Booked on the maiden TA also, I can hardly wait! Thanks for the food porn and all the other details. Too bad no one thought to bring back samples for those of us that couldn't attend! :)

Enough about the food....really want to see the Summer 2015 schedules. ;) After that I'll get excited about the food, LOL. I know RCI said weeks instead of days about announcing it....just hope it's sooner than later.
