You need to be able to carry all your bags with out assisstance from crew members

simple as that

Do not put you bags in the hall the night before disembarking

On the sheet they give you for the time you want off check the earliest possible time

Is your port Port Everglades? If so, there's no reason to do the "self-carry"...simply tell them (about midway thru the cruise, they will ask), that you have an early flight...they will put you in one of the 1st groups off the ship. The airport is about 10 mins. away...no need to lug your bags off the ship for that late of a flight.

I'd still do the "self walk off". Most folks don't (do the self walkoff). So it's not crazy waiting for or getting a cab. Assuming there are no snafus with the ship's arrival and customs, you should be off and in a cab by 8. Also, on ship's arrival days the airport can get VERY busy. Better to get there as early as possible. I'd rather be sitting at my gate waiting for the flight then in traffic or in a LONG security line. Also, if your line offers "EZ check" or something similar it's the greatest thing since sliced bread! They do all of the "organizing" for you. You put your bags out in the hall the last evening of the cruise ,(appropriately tagged) and the next time you see them is on the carousel at your home airport. I'd still do the self walkoff, but you'd have nothing but hand luggage.

We always do the walk off now but on our last cruise, NCL's Sun the walk off was terrible!!!! They let everyone walk off at the same time so there were LOTS of people. We got in a very long line at 8am when we were told it began. The line was so long we didn't get off the ship until 8:45!! Luckily we drive but we weren't happy we couldn't start our 12+ hour drive earlier. Now we have another reason to not like NCL.

On Princess they changed our walk off time to #1s when I explained we had a 12+ hour drive.

On the Carnival Fantasy we are usually the 1st off at 6:15! Diamond and Platinum meet in the piano bar and are escorted off when customs has been cleared.

Ships usually will give you the 1st off for checked luggage if you tell them your flight time.
