Austcruiser84 Posted April 14, 2014 #1 Share Posted April 14, 2014 Im wondering whether anyone knows what work is taking place during the upcoming QE drydocking in May? Is it a refit?
Kamloops50 Posted April 14, 2014 #2 Share Posted April 14, 2014 Probably a lot of routine work that can't be done at sea or in port.
Rare Scrapnana Posted April 14, 2014 #3 Share Posted April 14, 2014 I heard that most of it is routine maintenance but someone at our table was told by the Captain they are going to be putting some cabins in part of what is now the casino. The social hostess said she thought they were making some cabins for entertainers who are brought on board for short stays.

I find it interesting that they are cutting down on Casino space, if this is what they propose to do.:D
Oahucruiser Posted April 15, 2014 #5 Share Posted April 15, 2014 The casino is already pretty tiny. What would be left of it if they put a couple of cabins in that space? Not much.

On most of my journeys the casino was almost unused. They seem to live from DW's money only:(

Rare Scrapnana Posted April 15, 2014 #8 Share Posted April 15, 2014 The rumour I heard was that they were going to remove the casino bar (the Golden Lion Pub is just across from the casino so they may feel they don't need both). I can't imagine wanting to pay for a cabin that is across from the pub and backs up to the Queens Room.

I can't imagine wanting to pay for a cabin that is across from the pub and backs up to the Queens Room. The bar area isn't all that big. I can't imagine building any staterooms with baths in that small space. Perhaps that is all it is, a rumor. Maybe they will post some facts about the drydock on the We Are Cunard site. sandbella Posted April 19, 2014 #11 Share Posted April 19, 2014 I have heard on good authority that there will be single cabins in the casino area and also on deck 10, above the pool. Sandra
Austcruiser84 Posted April 19, 2014 Author #12 Share Posted April 19, 2014 I have heard on good authority that there will be single cabins in the casino area and also on deck 10, above the pool. Sandra Yet these don't seem to be for sale for ordinary passengers post refit/dry dock. I assume then that these will be for guests/short term performers. If they are for paying passengers, I certainly hope Cunard doesn't just allocate these to single supplement passengers. That would be a gross violation of consumer expectations. davecttr Posted April 19, 2014 #13 Share Posted April 19, 2014 I have heard on good authority that there will be single cabins in the casino area and also on deck 10, above the pool. Sandra Just a warning here. P&O added single cabins to their ship Ventura during a refit and I was unfortunate enough to book one. They were appalling. Lots of creaking and squeaking from inside the walls and ceiling when the ship was underway. I could not sleep the first night because of a high pitched squeak and moved cabin the next morning. The replacement cabin was better but still bad compared with an oridinary double. My advice would be not to book a retrofitted cabin until you have seen positive feedback on the noise issue. What was the problem? I think all the new parts and joints were rubbing together as the ship flexed plus there appeared to be several loose cables that were swinging about in the wall spaces. I would think the solution was to take the cabins out of service for a long voyage and have an onboard team of fixers who would identify and cure each creak and squeak. sandbella Posted April 19, 2014 #14 Share Posted April 19, 2014 I would guess they might be for dance hosts or similar people. Sandra

Ray66 Posted May 14, 2014 #16 Share Posted May 14, 2014 I think the refit starts today (Thursday) and it will last 3 weeks (?) as I think the next cruise from Southampton is not until 4th June.
alibabacruisers Posted May 15, 2014 #17 Share Posted May 15, 2014 It would be nice if Cunard via We Are Cunard would post pictures during the refit or at least after the refit so we could see the progress. I remember when QE was being built and their site would show the progress and it was so exciting (we were booked to go on during her maiden season). maggiemou Posted May 15, 2014 #21 Share Posted May 15, 2014 We were I the world cruise and the story from the staff in the Golden Lion pub was that it was going to be altered to add some day light to it. There are no windows in the the bar area. The bar in the casino is going to be removed. I also heard maybe single cabins would be added to this area. I think they did a similar reconstruction on P&O Arcadia ( also a Vista class ship) last year.
zider Posted May 16, 2014 #22 Share Posted May 16, 2014 From a UK site. In response to passenger demand and changing demographics, a total of nine new single staterooms are being created on deck 2 midships by re-modelling part of the ship’s casino. Eight will be a new grade of Ocean View single staterooms and the ninth will be a standard inside room. In the ship’s informal Lido restaurant, refurbishments will mean that waiters with insulated coffee and tea pots will in future serve passengers with hot drinks at all meals, while recessed risers will improve the styling of the self service area as well as passenger flows within it. More generally, carpets are being renewed and large flat-screen TVs – mostly 32” or above – are being installed in all passenger staterooms. Sun awnings are being erected on the open area near the Lido pool at the stern on deck 9 and on both sides of the Grills Upper Terrace area near the top of the ship to offer more shade out on deck. The creation of a dedicated studio will enable the ship’s photographers to offer high-end portraiture while the addition of touch screens in the photo gallery will continue the development of a digital environment in which passengers can more easily find and select photos taken of them by the team. Significant work is planned for the shopping area on board: the footprint is increasing, new Fine Jewellery and Watch shops opening and the layout, lighting and overall shopping experience for passengers is being enhanced. On the technical front, scrubber technology is being installed in line with the company’s commitment to minimising its environmental impact. This involves the installation of a new filtration system for the exhaust gas from the ship’s engines. Angus Struthers, Cunard’s Marketing Director, said: “Queen Elizabeth is already a much loved ship and following this multi-million pound refit she is sure to shine brightly for years to come. Whilst there has been investment across the ship, we are particularly delighted to announce that following this refit, there will be staterooms for single travellers on board a Cunard ship for the first time since QE2.”
