OBC use

A lovely, generous thought, but passengers need to keep the size of a typical crew cabin in mind before giving a gift of ANYTHING but cash-

Three share this space for six months at a time.

Not sure I want to ask how you got a photo of a crew cabin

some have 10mths contracts but I think the cabins on the O class ships are a bit larger & sleep 2 from what I have heard

On our Norway cruise our stewardess had not packed a warm coat for her stint onboard

I was going to buy her a nice warm scarf from the shops but wanted to ask her what colour she preferred... then I saw her onshore with the Pink scarf I was going to buy ..so cash it was

We took an extra toque which we passed onto one of the cabin stewards....it was much appreciated at the North Cape

Sometimes new crew do not come from cooler climates & do not think of packing warm clothes for some of the routings

Some appreciate small things EG: ginger candy for seasickness ;)

Sometimes they do not have time to go ashore shopping for basic items

Indulge me!! Non refundable OBC can only be used for the casino and the shops? Yes or no?

I believe non-refundable means you can NOT use it in the casino because to do so basically means you are getting cash to play casino games and getting cash = having OBC refunded to you. So you have to use it for things you actually buy... drinks/wine, shops, spa, excursions and so forth.

I agree with Jim & Stan, how much stuff do they need! I think cash works best, and I think that's what they really would like-think what you'd want......

Rick

Yes, I agree that cash is best BUT the comment was made that you can't get a cash reimbursement for unused OBC. As you can only direct the unused OBC towards the gratuities pool and not to an individual, the only other way is to purchase them a gift with the OBC.

I know several crew members on a personal basis and know they all appreciated cash & gifts especially things they cannot afford to purchase themselves.

And as Lyn stated not all crew get to spend time onshore shopping for themselves or for gifts for their family. I also understand that the crew cabins are small but most go to the ship at the start of their contract with minimal possessions knowing they collect things along the way OR due to lack of funds at the end of their vacation time.
