Admittedly so far I have only sailed Holland America but in the South Pacific from Australia so the age demographic is different to that in the US (more a mix of ages). But when I have done the South Pacific which is warm weather, islands and swimsuits there have been all shapes and sizes and nobody takes any notice. The one thing I will say is that some people know what is more flattering for their shape and look great no matter what their size and some people, well you can image :)

There are so many smart swimsuits out there that incorporate flattering tops, longer skirts and funky boardies (that's Australian for swim shorts) for women that with a bit of research you can come up with a great combination that you feel comfortable in. Go to the Fashion Board here on cruise critic, they have some great advice where to go to get the right swimsuit for different shapes at reasonable prices.

There will be people of all sizes and shapes on the ship, just like there are here at home. Find a comfortable swim suit, a nice outfit for formal night (black pants and a fancy top work great), and casual clothes that are comfortable and make you feel pretty. What a great way to celebrate your anniversary.

My mom had the same worries - and then she came to America and saw that there are all sizes and shapes on the ship, at the local swim park, etc., and then she did not feel so out of place. Honestly, do not worry about it, just enjoy yourself.

Regarding "having" to be at the swimming pool on the cruise ship - you will find so many other things to do on the ship that you could be busy all day, every day, and not even bother to go near the pool. There are 3 meal sessions a day (with lots of healthy options too if desired), the casino, theater shows, comedy club, movies in your cabin, places to read a book, places to view the ocean, bars, trivia shows, etc. etc. On my last 3 cruises I probably went for a swim once or twice on the ship, and it was a quick dip, then back to cabin and got changed for next thing I wanted to do.

Go for it - enjoy yourself.

I have seen 300lb women having fun in a bikini! They don't care and neither do I and I have to praise them for not caring. If you don't get a suit, then wear your shorts & t shirt in the pool. I have seen people wearing t shirts in the pool- don't want to get sunburned. And I have swim shorts that are shorts made for swimming with a liner like men have. There are always heavy people on cruises so just go, don't think of your weight, and have fun!!!!!

I am a fluffy girl myself and my attitude has always been "I'm never going to see these people again so who cares!"

Go and enjoy yourself and don't give your weight a second thought. No way would I skip on a wonderful cruise based on what you think others might think.

Have a wonderful cruise!!!!

There was a woman I met in my last cruise--wish we had traded contact info--she was definitely obese, although I would peg her around 250 rather than 350. She had a really cute swimsuit made by Profile by Gottex. It had good coverage with bust support, wider straps to keep it from digging into shoulders, and skirt that had enough length to cover the butt and tops of her thighs, but not so long that she looked like she was wearing a bathing suit from the 1920's. I don't know how large their sizes run, but I have a suit by them and can say that they are very comfortable and although pricey, will last and last.

I would definitely suggest looking into that line.

Depending on your ship, you might find the larger showers in the spa more suitable. Some larger people have a very difficult time with the sometimes very small showers in the typical cabins.

I agree and would go even a little farther to say that there are probably more overweight folks than not on cruises leaving from the US

As mentioned there is plenty to do without getting in the pool. There are also plenty of shaded spots to lounge around on public decks where you wouldn't look 'odd' not wearing a swimsuit. In fact I've seen plenty of folks laying in the sun in clothes. Nothing odd about it.

Life is short don't let other people determine how you live. And really in this case you're letting YOUR perception of what other people might think affect your actions. Even if people do think something, who cares. You'll never see any of them again! And if those people want to waste their vacation judging people for their physical appearance well I'd say they've got a much bigger problem than you ever would!

Lastly, since I'm rambling now, speaking as someone that spent the first 9 years of my marriage trying to convince my wife to go on a cruise...if it's important to your husband then go!

Odds are, you'll see others of your same size or larger. With 2500 - 3000 (or more) people on board, no one will really care much about your weight. You'd probably get more stares if you painted your body bright blue and dyed your hair bright pink. Go on the cruise and have a good time.;)

I agree. And, there will be other people on the pool deck or in lounge chairs who are not wearing swim suits, just shorts and a t-shirt. I actually prefer to be away from the pool area because of noise and crowding.

Not all that many people even swim in the pools. I mostly use the pool only to cool down; you can't do any real swimming as they are too small and crowded.

You're right about that. "Swimming pool" is kind of a misnomer on the ship. But I suppose it is easier to say than a "stand-here-in-four-feet-of-water-and-cool-off" pool.

If you are interested in finding a swimsuit, there are plenty of online stores for plus sized women that sell suits. If you are not aware of onestopplus.com, this is a great site to go to. They sell suits with skirts, shorts, tanks, tankinis, etc. Hopefully you will have a wonderful time and enjoy your cruise.

I'm in your size range, and just returned from a Carnival cruise. There were more folks who looked like me than look like those who model bikinis

There were all kinds of swimsuits, wear what you feel comfortable in.

There are many places to get a suit that will work with your body type. I'm an extreme pear, and usually like a suit with a skirt. Try Junonia, loveyourpeaches, to name just 2 good sites. (both are dotcom)

I've grown to love Carnival for the seating in the entertainment venues, most are sofa type without arms!

So glad that you are going on the cruise! You are going to be so busy it may not even cross your mind, believe me I am fluffy too and I just decided that if I let everyone else make me feel uncomfortable I am going to miss out on so much of life!

Once on the cruise, you'll feel quite comfortable because you'll see others who are overweight having a great time swimming & sunbathing and not worrying about it.

Look forward to having a wonderful cruise. :)

Happy Anniversary! You will have a wonderful time. A cruise can be a very relaxing, enjoyable vacation. It took some searching, but I see you are cruising to the Caribbean. Although you may not be able to fully swim onboard in the little pools as someone said (might be crowded on sea days, too), you can absolutely have some fun beach days in the ports! So excited for you!

Additionally, there are many swimsuits available for full figured gals. Here is a site I bought from once; they have regular and plus sizes and a great return policy if you don't love it. The swim dresses are super cute and give you a little extra coverage if that's what you feel you need/want.

Have fun! :)

The commercials you see on TV "do not" reflect the true passengers that you find on any cruise ship on any given day. Go and have a good time.

Good, Good, Good, Good, Good........ did I say Good? :D

Who cares what size someone else is. Your husband clearly wants to be with you and that is what matters.

I'm excited for you but evern more for him that you care enough for him to put your personal feelings to the side to please him.

You will have a wonderful time and most assuredly will not be the only large size guest aboard.

Hope you have a wonderful Time!!!
