Self-Serve Laundry question

How do you pay for the self-serve laundry on Princess ships? Stupid question perhaps, but I just thought that for a ship that is on a cashless system there may not be many pocketfuls of quarters.

On the Royal and the Regal, I'm told that the cruise card is used; the other ships still use US quarters which can be obtained from a change machine in the laundry room (beware-they may be empty), the purser's desk, or the casino. DW usually brings a couple of $10 rolls of quarters.

Note also that on the ships where quarters are used to run the machines ($2/load), the detergents and anti-static sheets are available from vending machines that, surprise, also take US quarters.

Not quite correct. The machines on the Royal and Regal use tokens which can be obtained from a machine using your cruise card. Splitting hairs but technically, you can't use your cruise card directly with the machines. It would be nice if you could.

I always take a roll of quarters on my cruise for the laundromat; I just don't trust the change machine(s). I also take along a few Tide pods. Granted I could go to the Purser's desk to get quarters, but I simply don't want to bother them, nor do I want to go all the way down there from my deck.

Yes, I agree it sure would be nice if we could simply use our sail card in the machines.

We used quarters on the Island and took a roll along. We also brought detergent.

Isn't it recommended to use the ship's detergent and not bring your own? (It has been a while since we sailed on a ship with self-help laundry)

On the Royal, one would swipe one's card and receive tokens. For long cruises, I recommend getting a few extra tokens early as the machines were frequently out of service on our deck.

Did the machines on the Royal take quarters as well as tokens, or just the tokens?

HAL has their own detergent system. On Princess you can use your own. We use a half of a Purex sheet.

We travel with our own quarters - don't want to have to go to the purser's desk if the change machine isn't working, and I take along Purex sheets as well. It is just easier to be able to take everything I need in one trip to the laundry room, rather than worry if one or two dispensers are empty. There are things I do not send out to the ship's laundry, so I do them myself, but I don't want to spend anymore time than necessary on this chore.

I do understand that the Royal and Regal use tokens.

On the Pacific and Ocean, they seem to have detergent that self-dispenses in to the washers. I think they still use quarters, although I haven't been aboard them for a while.

We were on the Star Princess two weeks ago and used quarters. Both washer and dryer required $2 per load. The change machines actually worked.

The hours for the laundry on posted on the door, but they may or may not lock the door.

Thanks. Only HAL ship we have been on that had a laundry was the Amsterdam; since then we have been on the larger ships.
