The caesar salad had a strange odour. I will not tell you the affect it had on me 2 hours later. I only ate the salmon in the buffet or bbq. I have no idea what it is like in the dining room.

Oh, please don't say that! We sail in November on the Sun (1st time on NCL). Hope its because of the itinerary and not indicative of the cruise line itself. What did you think of the ship and how was the food in general?

Passengers vary so the perfume and smoking problem might not be a problem another cruise time.

I am sensitive to smells and had no problem with either perfume scents or smoking odors during the 33 days we spent on the Sun.

We were on this exact same cruise (5/26 - 6/3 Alaska northbound on the Sun) and did not experience any problems with smelling smoke in any of the public areas except in the casino obviously. Nor can I recall any perfume issues. And we are both highly sensitive to smells.

We had a wonderful time on this cruise. The captain was able to maneuver the ship close to the glaciers. The weather was great considering it was Alaska. And we loved the Sun. Our favorite NCL ship so far.

Sailed the NCL SUN July 2013 and enjoyed the trip immensely and YES

Smoke in the casino - unavoidable - don't go there find another way around

by going up or down a deck or outside on the jogging/running deck.

As for smoke on the balcony from your neighbors well not much can be done

there except simply ask for help - when they light up get off the balcony and

close the door.

An excellent place to escape smoke and odd odors is the Observation Lounge

on the 12 deck forward. A nice quite spot of respite and no one smokes on the

outside observation deck (often it is way to windy) !

As for the perfume - stay away from the overpriced gift shops especially on

ships that have a department store cosmetics section - WHEW that can be something.

As for people that have to go bathing in scent - you will just have to simply avoid them like the plague.

Can't imagine this happening much on a Alaska cruise - people liking the fresh air so much.

But on Caribbean and Mediterranean cruises then I see the idiots trying to see who can lather

on as much 55 gallon barrels of the crap fermented from some dead species or rotted plant !

Cruise lines need to REALLY LISTEN WELL and then craft rules like the airlines have done !

"NO SMOKING" ! OR until then smoking permitted only in regulated ventilated places - like in a tender towed 500 yards behind the ship !

Egads the damages that smokers are doing to the health and well being of non-smokers !

A very slow systematic unknowing murder of fellow human beings !

Strong statement - I could live longer without smoke in my life(time)!

I purchased a purse in the gift shop and it still reeks of perfume! I think they were pumping it throughout the ship to hide the bad smell we noticed when we got on the ship the first day.

Well, this sounds like progress, the source of perfume smell has been identified. Had the purse been returned immediately, perhaps the issue would have been avoided.

We also were on the same cruise. No problem with smoke or perfume but we were very disappointed with the food & service I the dining room. Also we felt that the buffet on deck 11 was much like a factory canteen. Often very hard to find a chair to sit on. I have sailed over 500 days in the last four years & this cruise was the first one where I have had to queue so much. I admit that Alaska was wonderful & we had fantastic weather but this was our first & last with NCL.

Yes noted that the seating in the Lido deck buffet is not very good - BUT -

however NCL does make room in the SportsBar aft portside same deck

and then you are welcome to take your meal to the Great Outdoors or to

the open swimming pool Lido area although both of these areas may not

be very comfortable if the weather is like it is in the early-late season of

Alaska. In Caribbean waters only a intense down pour of rain may cause

you to seek shelter. Remember that you are perfectly free to take your

meals most anywhere on the ship - back to your cabin or up to the Observation

Lounge 12th deck forward.

Another thing if the buffet lines are really long there is another venue on the

port side of the lido deck just a bit forward of the Sports Bar - a tad more formal

- not for the swimming pool crowd and then hidden behind the Great Outdoors

is another buffet service area where the soft serve ice cream is.

Check out where all the hidden treasures are and another thought you can go

to one of the Main Dinning Rooms for lunch and lastly of course is room service !

Post comment - STOP - don't go where and when the crowd will be eating at

prime time (on sea days this can be a problem that can't be avoided)!

So starve til you get a seat or go early and command all the seating you can !

Don't count NCL out - there maybe worse cruise lines you have yet to encounter !

The time will come when there will be no smoking on ships, but it is not going to happen in the near future. It has been tried; didn't work. Remember a 3hr flight on an airplane is very different from a 7 t0 14 day cruise. As long as smoking is legal we have to learn to get along with each other and make compromises. The cruise lines have done just that: no smoking in cabins, dining rooms, show rooms and only one side of the ship. I think they have done very well. BTW, I am a non smoker, don't like the smell any better than anyone, but I realize smokers have right too. Could we all live longer without smoke in our lives, who knows? Everyone realized it has contributed to many deaths, but here are those who have smoked for years and live to be 100 plus.

wow 500 days in 4 years: that means you spend about 1/3 of your time on ships: a lot of of time: you must really enjoy cruising or you don't have a home of your own. LOL

I don't agree with you on the quality of food. I see your favorite line is Princess and we happen to think both the food and service on Princess is inferior to NCL, but we each have our own idea of service. Yes, the Sun has a pretty poor buffet set up, but we have never had trouble finding a place to sit, when you consider all the options, not just the main buffet section. I would say don't let one experience turn you off, but I won't. There is a reason for so many cruise lines, all doing fairly well: what works for one person does not for another. We all look for something different in a cruise; you didn't find what you are looking for in NCL.

I have nothing on soap operas - something like "Murder by Death" ! LOL !

Well where there is smoke there is fire - well maybe not so much an actual fire like in an open flame.

But that is what forums are about flaming fire like free speech !

The OP was not happy about perfume smells and smoke (and mirrors) !

A toast to each his own and the devil for us all !

This post was about our experience and it was not intended to result in a soap opera or smoking policy argument. We loved Alaska, but were not extremely impressed by Norwegian....sorry.

When one posts on here the intent rarely effects what people decide to say.
Not being extremely impressed by NCI requires no apology.
