cruiseco Posted July 9, 2014 #1 Share Posted July 9, 2014 I just had lunch with a representative of one of the largest US-based insurer (I won't identify which) and asked a few questions everyone seems to have. #1 What is the average cost to get a cruise passenger back home because of a medical emergency? $76,000 #2 How much evacuation/repatriation coverage is enough? Their company has never had one cost over $500K, he knows of a couple over $400K, and he has never personally seen one over $375K. Don't pay extra just to get $1M. You won't need it. #3 Why are premiums so high for seniors? In his previous position his big account was a particular state's AAA Travel Offices. They ran the numbers and it turned out that of the clients 75 or over, 82% filed some sort of claim.
Happy2cruise Posted July 10, 2014 #2 Share Posted July 10, 2014 Thanks......very interesting. We always got the 1 million evacuation/repatriation coverage. Good to know we really don't need it.

Same here... we've always purchased $1M. Good to know we can now consider $500K sufficient.

ducklite Posted July 25, 2014 #5 Share Posted July 25, 2014 The question is, is that $1M total or per person. Because if it's total and there are four of you, you might need to decide who us staying behind...

cherylandtk Posted July 26, 2014 #7 Share Posted July 26, 2014 Not always, policies differ in how they are written and in some cases the policy is issued for more than one person with an aggregate limit, some times it is one policy per person. CSA comes to mind as one that can be issued either as a combined or individual policy.

Just went and doubled checked my current policy (with another carrier), and it is per person. Whew! Edited July 27, 2014 by RJ2002
