Norwegian Cruise Line Bans Smoking on Balconies

Non smoker here, but we have never been bothered on our balcony from others smoking, but we have felt the amount of smoke in the casino. We feel bad for those smokers who enjoy smoking on their balconies, and we would rather have the smoke outside, than trapped in the casino.

And how about all those parents who want to put their children to bed, and sit outside with a smoke?? Leave the sleeping child to go to a designated area????

We still feel that designating some cabins on one side of the ship as smoking cabins, would of been fair to all.

Safe sailing

I imagine the e-cig market goes even higher now................

As one can vape right in the cabin , open the door immediately and no one knows forays there just is no smoke or odor

While I doubt they will do this at the moment, If they think its necessary, they can check for residue on the floor and counter areas to see if there is a trace of it. There is a way to check for residue. I doubt they will do this in the short term but there is a way to find out.

and for those that say that they spilled some of the liquid, the residue will be all over, it would be pretty difficult to explain it all over the countertops and floor and mirror and balcony railings, and balcony glass...

I sincerely doubt they will do this but it is not out of the realm of possibility

Really... You mean the other threads about it were right?

Yep. Completely predictable that NCL was going to ban balcony smoking. I said it would be sooner or later, probably sooner and turned out to be correct. This is something the cruise lines agreed to do for passenger safety under SOLAS.

Treating e-cigs the same as cigarettes is just stupid, especially considering the explanation for it - that a bunch of people who refuse to mind their own business will perceive that the policy is not enforced.

Switch to Princess...THey allow e-cig use everywhere except main show lounge and MDR

Sorry, we do not have semantics in Blackburn and as we are already booked on a cruise, how can we move to another cruise line? Think about it for a minute
You can cancel your NCL cruise without a penalty. That's why the date 11/1/14 was chosen instead of, say, tomorrow.

One less reason to cruise NCL. Mediocre at best. Was going to switch from Carnival to NCL before this decision. But with both of these line's decisions, compared to the more polished lines; Celebrity/Royal, the price better continue to be low. Not an advantage to travel Carnival anymore or attempt another trip on NCL. Epic was NOT epic and NCL Star was worse. As many other folks, we got locked out of our cabins twice on Star, and that was on a 2 day cruise. Way to go NCL, consistent.

Princess at least allows e-cigs everywhere except MDR and show lounge. Think I will look into cruising with them next.

bwhahahahah. Good luck.

"Excuse me sir, you're not allowed to smoke in here unless you're playing"

"Oh I am playing. I'm walking from this machine to that one over there"

Perhaps they can have the same crew that enforce the 30 minute rule re: loungers on the pool deck enforce the players only smoking rule in the casino;)

As long as it is a designated area per the signage

I for one applause Ncl and fully expect them to police this policy. So if you are not sitting and actively sting in the casino do not smoke

I would expect that means the seated player is the only one allowed to smoke not the spouse standing next to them at the slot machine

As I am sailing the ba I will especially expect this to be enforced. NCL I hope you are hearing this!!!!

Well if they enforce it...Smokers will sit at the penny machines playing 9 cents a spin while smoking. It pretty much guarantees any machines in the smoking section will be occupied.

don't think there is a hope that some non smokers will ever stop complaining,, they will be the ones who walk through the smoking area and purposely walk through the smoking area, cough and make a snide comment and then complain to the cruise line and want compensation.

Several years on back CCL we were in the smoking area on the Lido deck enjoying a cigarette after lunch when a woman sat down at a table next to us.After and lil coughing and waving smoke away she asked if we could put our cigarettes out because she didn't like smoke while she was eating. We politely explained to her that on the other side of the Lido deck there was a non-smoking area that had a fair amount of open tables. Well that just wouldn't do because her friend was a smoker.

Thats good to know its sailings ON and AFTER Nov 1st. We are on the TA cruise 25th October - we are both non smokers, we both use zero nicotine shisha pens (menthol) -- I could always argue the case ours are not ecigs - but are in fact marketed and sold as shisha pens - I would rather not though -

I dont like that we are forced back into smoking areas - believe it or not we dont like smoke now - and its such a step backwards - we just enjoy our shisha pens and it stops the habit of nitpicking at food.

On our last cruise - ecigs were banned in public indoor areas indoors BUT were allowed INSIDE the privacy of our own cabins and on balconies - we were great with that. (Those of you who are hardened smokers - take a suite on Costa in the Caribbean - all inclusive is less than 20$ per day and you can smoke to your hearts content).... Keep an open miind, we are Costa pearl members and at suite level its a bargain cruise and you can still smoke - (note for the sake of wanna still cruise smokers!:)

Rules aside - to police ecigs is plain stupid. If you blow into a piece of clothing or paper - it dissipates in seconds -

In saying all that - I am much happier to be able to use or shisha pens on our balcony during our 14 night cruise without hassle -

So half way through our cruise they cannot move the goalposts??

There is no liquid residue in e-cigs with a screw in cartrige to spill ..it's in and contained within the cartrige....no residue to spill.

Again you can vape and vape within your cabin until the cows come home and immediately open you door....no smoke, no residue no odor( except for the cows)

Princess does not allow ECigs on balconies. And then is only allowed in designated smoking sections. They are allowed in cabins

OMG I had just about the same experience on my last cruise! No one stopped smoking and she stomped away. Really I don't to wish harm or offend anyone, but when I'm following the rules and doing my best not to offend others it does test my tolerance.

LOL you call it 'vaping' as if it were any different. Vaping IS smoking. You are still dumping toxic substances into the air. I'll just leave it at that and hopefully you will realize how silly you sound when you use that term. No need for me to waste any more time in this thread. Too many viscous personal attacks. (Hi Cathy did you cancel yet?)

Potaaato / Pataado

Makes no difference.........vape it , suck it ,blow it, spew it,,,,,there is no smoke to smell , , no residual to see...walk into the cabin immediately there after the event ,you would never know my friend...except for the cows.

I doubt someone who is only in the casino to smoke is going to sit there all day. I don't smoke, but if its a machine I want to play I can wait it out. It doesn't take that long to smoke a cigarette. It may be less of a problem than you think.

your kidding right???

The mist or vapor that you emit while smoking doesnt just disappear. Particles from the vapor goes where ever you are using it. on the floor, the counters, the mirrors. your vapor is not magic. it absolutely leaves a trace.

Dude............you will not see ,smell or ever know it

You may get the ghost busters equipment and find it

But that will not happen

No kidding no worries my friend

People will use them in the staterooms & balconies,,,,,no one knows it and is not going to get the ghost busters equipment or black light for as they just can't see it

Bigger fish to fry

Actually you are very funny

Think about it. With all the effort. Rules. Regulations now being put into place just who do you think they are going to listen to?

The smoker trying to break the rules or the pax who is reminding Ncl that they are not enforcing their own rules? Rules btw that the are required to have and enforce. Solas I believe

Regardless smoke free casinos and ships are certainly in the future

Please dont bother with the ccl paradise comparison or any other such data. Ancient history and times have changed

Smoking is swiftly becoming a habit that can only be done on the privacy if ones home and even then when the others there agree to it

I know many smokers who won't or cant even smoke in their own homes

It's all a moot point anyway as everyone knows where the wind is blowing so to speak

Dear Valued Guest,

As the health and well-being of our guests and crew is of the utmost importance, Norwegian Cruise Line will institute changes to its smoking policy for all sailings on or after November 1, 2014. The specific changes prohibit smoking on stateroom balconies and limit smoking in the casino to players. On Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway, smoking on The Waterfront will be permitted on the starboard side, except by the outdoor dining areas.

You can view Norwegian's complete smoking policy HERE.

We thank you for your understanding and cooperation and look forward to welcoming you on board your upcoming cruise.

Sincerely,

Norwegian Cruise Line
