Is 11:10am flight out of Tampa too early?

Recommended Posts

It's perfectly fine unless fog hits the port in which case a 4pm flight would be cutting it close! So as long as everything goes on schedule you will be fine. personally I will not book a flight before3 out of Tampa after hitting fog after one cruise and having to change flights and barely making a 4 pm flight while running in the airport.

When does the cruise return? If you're doing a short 4 night that returns on Monday just note that like half the ship will most likely be doing self exit and once for us last year that didn't start until 8. Again FOG is a big question depending on time of year.

It's scheduled to arrive at 7am. It's in January, if that factors in too.

If you actually arrive at 7am, do self-assist disembarkation, take a taxi, you should be able to get to the airport before 9am.

Depends on the weather. In FL during Jan it can be 40 in the morning and 75 by noon. It really just depends on mother nature. We tend to see a lot of inland fog as "winter" is ending and the warmer more humid air is pushing in. You can't plan for everything though..

It depends also on what airline and are you checking luggage? Many of them have 30-45 minutes before take off. Tampa is an excellent airport for timing. Not to large at all and very straight forward. Also by then even on a Monday the business crowd already be gone. I never get to that airport more than an hour before my flight unless traveling international.

Taxi from port to airport should be about 30 minutes due to rush hour otherwise it would only be 10-15 minutes tops.

I'm sorry but if there is fog it doesn't depend on what airline or that Tampa is a good airport. It means the ship is delayed.

I would not do it.

That's fine. I wasn't talking about fog and if there was fog 3pm could be a problem as well.

I was replying to the OP's original post with my opinion. You already stated you wouldn't do it. That is you. I am giving him information that IMO, get that, could be helpful and useful as many other airports are not as good as Tampa.

You know we can disagree right?:eek:

On our NYE Cruise in 2012, we got stopped by fog outside the bay around 1AM. We didn't go under the skyway bridge until 10:30 AM, and didn't dock until around 2:30 PM. Fog in Tampa is quite common in winter, since the bay itself is very shallow, and warm water and cold air don't mix very well.

You can get to the airport from the cruise port in about 20 minutes - once you get off the ship.

If you really want to be on the safe side you could always book a hotel for the night and just leave the next morning. Not ideal, but the $100 bucks or so may be well worth the headache if you end up missing a flight.

What time would you book, then? It seems that either OP books what s/he wants with the understanding that s/he may miss even a 2:00pm flight or waits until the next day.

I would book the 11:10 unless there's something in the noon-1:00pm time frame, because I hate having to rush off the ship at the end of my vacation. If you are delayed by fog, you probably will be in U.S. cellphone range and able to rearrange your flight while onboard, so you won't be trying to get the last two seats on the plane while you're in line at the airport.

We were on Jewel last year and the Captain sped up to get us into port shortly after midnight because he knew that fog was coming in. I'm sure it ruined the casino revenue, but I thought it was a great gesture.

I have to tell you that for most arrivals to the USA I don't book a flight until around Noon at the earliest, because I have seen too many things go wrong including late arrivals, customs/immigration issues and the like. I then factor in other issues. If it was me, yes, I would go with a 2:00 PM flight or even 3:00 PM and if I thought flights are not optimal I would go with a flight the next day. Fog this time of the year can be a big problem and the challenge is that if you miss the flight aside from the penalties that may be involved the next set of flights can easily be full depending on where you are flying to.

Another reason I avoid early flights is because I see too many people spending part of their time on vacation worrying about it or worrying they have to get up even earlier on disembarkation day and then being first off the ship. I like to end our time on the ship in a positive manner

Anyway, hopefully the original poster will do what will work best for them. I learned a long time ago that what I prefer someone else might see differently I just try to at least lay out what I think makes sense for us based on our experiences.
