Thank you for posting all the pictures, reviews, menu's and details about this cruise. My wife and I are sailing on the Viking Tor on December 20th, we are going from Basel to Amsterdam and extending our trip for 2 more days in Amsterdam. Our cruise will be a cold, winter Christmas Market trip unlike your warm, and mostly sunny trip. Thanks again for sharing !

After reading your incredible review, I have the same almost-sad feeling that I do after the end of one of my trips....but I have the Viking Rhine to look forward to in June 2015. Thanks to you, I have no more questions about the cruise! Thank you so much for all of your time and trouble to post this....it was amazing!

Janet, thanks for following along and glad you enjoyed the review. I am sure other questions will arise before you trip. Happy planning and have a great trip down the Rhine next June!

HI Betty. The tourist train tour was about 20 minutes and is included with the optional tour fare. If you decide to do it later on your own it was about 7E pp to ride. We then had over 2 hours of free time to explore Colmar which was perfect. Make sure you get to the "Little Venice" area which is where the canals run through the city.

Jerry

Perfect. Thanks Jerry!

Thanks Got2Cruise. I will post some of our post cruise adventures and include a few from Paris. Having said that, we spent a week in Paris last year doing all the touristy things. You can see those adventures here: http://bondfamilytravel.com/paris.html This year in Paris was more relaxed...

Which cruise are you looking at for the Greek Islands? That is a destination very high on our list and we are looking seriously at an Azamara cruise in 2015.

Happy planning and safe travels!

Jerry

Jerry, we are looking at the Azamara cruises that go to Istanbul, and I also see an MSC one that is seven straight days of cruising, no sea days and hits more Greek Islands. (yes, I know, I know about MSC:eek:) Check out this gal's picture blog for the Eastern Med http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2074829 Hers is in the same league as yours. Maybe the ship will be different but the ports are awesome no matter which ship. Can't wait to look at the Paris photos, I'm sure they're great. Happy planning to you to, maybe I'll learn from your questions on the Med boards.:)

Cheryl, thanks for your kind words. There are lots of great reviews across CC (check out Gambee's review of Allure of the Seas http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1737751, the Preisman's site for any of their trips http://www.thepreismans.com/, or any of Mike & Tracy's Carnival Adventures) and there are so many, many more.

My goal was to take what we had learned and experienced and to show it in photos. Given the positive feedback from so many of you, I will call it successful but it truly was just to pay it forward in thanks for all those who helped us with our planning.

The earphone piece on the Quietvox did hook over the ear and hang against your ear so you should be fine.

Glad you enjoyed the review, thanks for following along and happy planning for your upcoming adventure! Don't forget to post a review ;)

Jerry

Thanks jerry

I will also read the allure review you suggested as we are hopping on her to do a transatlantic to get home from the river cruise.

Happy and safe travels

Cheryl

Thanks Jerry, we will be traveling September 2015 on the Avalon from Basel to Amsterdam. I believe the itinerary is a little different, your report is very helpful. I was surprised how many miles you put on each day.

Tami, glad the report was helpful. Our miles were higher in Amsterdam pre-cruise and were double for our days in Paris. But as I said, we like to walk. Happy planning and I look forward to your review!

We have friends who have done five Azamara cruises and they keep trying to talk us into joining them. With the 2nd person for 50% off sale they currently have on, I have a feeling we may be booking shortly.....

Thank you so much for your review. By far it is the best, most thorough, review I've seen on cruise critic. The pictures of not only the excursions but life on the ship are so helpful. Plus the commentary is so informative.

Not sure how I will wait till April for our trip though. Again, thank you!!

There is an awesome webcam view from across from the statue and up the hill at http://www.bafg.de. Scroll down at this website. Its in the lower right hand corner. I look at it everyday and probably saw your ship one day while you were docked!

Thanks for sharing! What a great way to watch the river traffic as the Moselle & Rhine meet at Koblenz.

After breakfast, we had a 9:00 am pickup with a private shuttle, Patrick's Limousine Service (also known as Limousine Service Basel). Patrick was waiting for us as we departed the Ingvi and we were off to the Basel train station. We were headed to Lucerne for the next 2 days.

Basel Train Station - we tried using the automated machines to purchase our tickets but found them very confusing with numerous ticket options. Patrick even escorted us into the station and tried to tickets but in the end we got in the line and bought them from the ticket window.

We headed to our platform

Thanks for your great review. I just returned from a Rhine Getaway Basel to Amsterdam on the Viking Sun. I read part of your review before I left and most of the rest of it while waiting in airports yesterday. I hope to post some information about my trip and will add pictures if I can figure out how to do it.

We then walked to our next destination, the Lion Monument: http://lucerne.all-about-switzerland.info/lucerne-lion-monument-pictures-history.html

After this, we walked back to the hotel, stopping at the train station for food, and called it a day. Tomorrow we would spend most of the day visiting Mount Pilatus.
