Boytjie Posted October 30, 2014 #2 Share Posted October 30, 2014 (edited) From the HAL website: Can I Bring Alcoholic Beverages Onboard? Revised Policy effective 1/31/14 Each guest 21 years and older may bring one bottle of wine or champagne (no larger than 750ml) onboard in carry-on luggage at the beginning of the voyage. This bottle will not be subject to a corkage fee if consumed in the stateroom. Additional wine or champagne bottles (no larger than 750ml) in carry-on luggage are welcome, but will incur a US$18.00 (subject to change) corkage fee each, irrespective of where they are intended to be consumed. Guests are not allowed to bring beer, boxed wine, or other liquors and spirits onboard. Holland America Line reserves the right to remove all alcoholic beverages from any guest luggage that violates this policy. Any alcoholic beverage found will be removed and returned on the last evening of the voyage. Guests will not receive any monetary compensation for alcoholic beverages that were removed from luggage. Wine and champagne bottles (no larger than 750ml) purchased in ports of call are welcome to be brought onboard subject to a US$18.00 (subject to change) corkage fee each, irrespective of where they are intended to be consumed. Alternatively guests can choose to have these bottles stored and returned on the last evening of the voyage at no charge. All other alcoholic beverages that are purchased in ports of calls as well as all alcoholic beverages purchased from onboard shops will be stored and returned on the last evening of the voyage at no charge. In-Room Dining offers reduced-price stateroom beverage packages for in-stateroom consumption of alcoholic beverages (a 15% Service Charge on all beverage items and packages with beverages will be added). Boytjie Posted October 30, 2014 #3 Share Posted October 30, 2014 So, at embarkation you can bring one bottle per adult onboard for in-room consumption without being charged a fee. Any additional bottles brought onboard will be charged an $18 corkage fee (if you take the fee-free bottle to a dining room, bar of lounge, it too will be charged the corkage fee. Bringing liquor or beer onboard is not allowed.
Zbayette Posted October 30, 2014 #4 Share Posted October 30, 2014 What was the policy before it changed in 2014? I thought most lines allowed one bottle but they never specified the size. Therefore on one we followed the policy of one bottle, but they confiscated our 5 L. We did manage to get it back though. ;)
RuthC Posted October 30, 2014 #5 Share Posted October 30, 2014 What was the policy before it changed in 2014? Unlimited wine could be brought on board, with no charge if it was consumed in the cabin. If the wine was brought to the dining room, or a lounge, there was a corkage fee of $18 per bottle, regardless of bottle size. All that changed at the end of January, 2014. Krazy Kruizers Posted October 30, 2014 #7 Share Posted October 30, 2014 OP As you can see, no hard alcohol can be brought onto the ship. This policy has been in affect for many years.

catl331 Posted October 31, 2014 #9 Share Posted October 31, 2014 If the cruise ships keep offering reduced fare prices to compete with each other, they have to cover expenses somewhere. Liquor and casino depts. help make up the difference. Their expenses don't go down and people keep looking for freebies and bargains.
OTOW guy Posted October 31, 2014 #10 Share Posted October 31, 2014 if you only drink wine in the dining room you still pay the $18 fee, but in advance. In the past they sorta looked the other way about liquor but seemed to be cracking down more recently as they did in Nov. but some posters have said that they have been able to bring some on board in luggage. And there's always RumRunner plastic . Rare crusinbanjo Posted October 31, 2014 #11 Share Posted October 31, 2014 This policy was in full force on our last cruise a few weeks ago, October 2014, on the Masdam. I know they need to make some money off of wine & beer, etc, but wow the prices seemed very high for the products being offered. A glass of wine could easily be $14. on a brand that retails in our area for less than $12. not really complaining just saying wow
uilleann Posted October 31, 2014 #12 Share Posted October 31, 2014 Out of Seattle it seemed that you were on the honor system for carry on. We stopped at the wine line but could just as easily continued past it. Note also that others in our part had "rum runners" bags, full of Gin and other liquor, in their checked luggage and on their person. It all got through. We still bought wine for the dinner table but having our own stuff saved us money. Its funny that a lot of people think that if you spend a lot of $$ on your cruise that you should not care about what they charge for drinks. I am not capable of that. Also you will find others who think that if you sneak wine or liquor that. You are ruining it for everyone and that ticket prices will increase or that HAL will stop the 1 bottle of wine allowance. I do not believe either will happen as a result these actions. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

The line was a mile long, and no one was complaining.

No, that's in Wisconsin where beer is fairly inexpensive. The price is even higher at Miller Park in Milwaukee (home of the Milwaukee Brewers) for Miller Beer which is brewed six blocks away from the stadium. Again, long lines. You can always tell the heavy beer drinkers at the Green Bay Packers home games in December when the temperature is less than ten degrees, they're the ones without shirts or jackets. :)

Mary Since you asked, we had three Pinot Noir choices for dinner tonight. They were $12, $14, and $24 (not a typo.) Each glass' price would pay for the cost of a bottle. Corkage would have been $30. We opted for a $76 bottle that would have cost us $28 in the store. The restaurant's cost was likely $19 - $22.
