Charges for adult children

I'd like to know how an adult child on a cruise pays their S/S bill.

 

The child has no credit card.

 

This person is staying in a separate cabin, their tips are prepaid.

 

If there are any charges on the S/S card, (the only charge could be for a trip to the ships doctor) the passenger has no cash, how does the cruise line get payment?

 

Hold the person hostage.

Call the police when getting to the home port.

 

Opinions, for this hypothetical situation please.

If there is no money on the S&S account, the adult child would not be able to charge anything. He/she would be denied anytime he/she tried.

I am voting for hold the person hostage, then call the police.

On our last cruise we only had a debit card and I did not want to put that on our S&S account in case it put a lot of our available funds on "hold" so we just put cash on our account. I believe we put $300 cash at the start to cover a few drinks & tips (which we hadn't pre-paid). Anyway, I had more cash in our cabin to put on our account to purchase some pictures, gifts, etc but hadn't put it on our account yet. But while in the gift shop I picked out a few things thinking they hadn't taken out the tips from our account yet and I would just replace they money. But they had taken our tips and the cashier told me I had no money on my account and I needed to go to guest services and give them more cash before I could make the purchase. So, based on that I don't think any purchases or services would be allowed if there is no money on your S&S account. But I could very well be wrong. And I would think a medical emergency would be completely different but at some point someone would have to sign a responsibility form for such services (like at a doctor office or hospital) and they would persue payment after the cruise if need be. Just my guess anyway.

I don't believe this is correct. You can technically obtain your S&S card on a "cash" basis, but not deposit anything at the time of embarkation. I believe the amount is a recommendation and that they do not REQUIRE you pay anything. We've traveled before with people who had prepaid tips and never put anything on their S&S accounts.

We travelled last year with our "adult child". At the time our family booked the cruise, our "adult child" was employed. He was laid off and went through a serious downturn. With nine of us going, I could hardly say to him, "too bad, so sad. No drinks for you." I was easily able to add him onto my credit card when I did the online check in. He received his s & s with everyone else and no one was the wiser.

My experience as well. No cash, no card, until we boarded. 10/26/2014 Magic. Carnival staff told us we had 24 hours after boarding to go to GS, and could use our S&S card until then We only purchased two drinks with our S&S cards before we went to GS, had no problem doing so. An additional comment, glad for the bartenders that they now require guests to pay gratuities with the Cheers program. JMHO. :eek:

Since every passenger has to electronically sign a contract in order to sail, he/she would be liable financially and Carnival would have to right to take legal action.

When checking in you tell the clerk CASH. You get a sign and sail card. You can use that card for 24 hours before even visiting the guest services. You will get a note in the cabin that you need to visit guest services.

 

If a person has a balance and tries to get off the ship the last day his sign and sail card will not ding but set off a signal to alert someone to escort the person to guest services. Or to the custum officer

We travel with our adult children all the time. And while they are still in school we pay for vacations. We love family vacations. When I book the trip I set up their room under my credit card and they can order drinks on their cards.

I think that a while ago someone posted that they had no credit left and owed the ship money and they weren't allowed to debark until they signed a note saying the money would be paid back within 30 days. I would think, that since without a credit card, the "adult" would have charging capabilities for 24 hours, AS A COURTESY, that (s)he would fit into the above category.

 

I know it's none of my business but why would anyone go on a cruise without being able to do anything other than drink lemonade, have free food and attend shows all cruise without at least having a coke or alcoholic drink? I know there are people who spend next to zero but I just don't know how they do it---well maybe I don't want to know as that's not how we do things. Strange to me, but hey, good luck and I'm sure it can be done.

The cruise line will get their funds. They aren't going to let anyone walk off the ship without payment or an iron clad repayment. Odds are, that guest will not be permitted to sail again. I don't know but I would guess cabin mates will get pulled into it.

Our account is zero. That is because we prepay everything including tips. We will buy "coupons" for photos. or onboard credit. We buy offsite excursions.

We do drink the free iced tea and lemonade.

 

I dont like to owe when I get home from vacation- this way I can start paying on the next one

It can definitely be done we have taken a few cruises where nothing was on our sign and sail account but tips. Not big drinkers and don't ever drink soda anyway. Do our own excursions off the ship. Never bought a photo or souvenir in 12 cruises. Never been to a specialty restaurant. Dont gamble. Had a great time every cruise. If I want a drink I can buy a dollar beer off the ship too.

This is only tangentially related to the OP's question, but ship staff do not have any authority whatsoever to keep a passenger on the ship against his or her will once it has docked at a U.S. port. Regardless of what they may tell you, you are free to leave at any time after the ship has cleared customs.

Theft is a crime. Knowing that you do not have money to buy something and walking away is theft. So the local laws will take over. Depends on the amount.

 

So you break you leg, go to sick bay, tell the doctor, that you have no cash, and no credit cards upfront. They will fix you up, and you will need to make arrangements.

 

The bottom lime. Be honest, you would be fine. Be dishonest, and face the local laws. (FL, TX, NJ, PR, AK etc).
