DiRonT Posted May 15, 2015 #351 Share Posted May 15, 2015 I know I'm in the minority here But ships have to stay modern. This design is just keeping pace with most new ships with the aft room design. And of course there's the fact that I got the new Penthouse suite on Lido for my upcoming Med cruise;) with the full wrap around balcony! Hi Kineticoh - Really hope you will post when you return. Would love to hear about and see pics of the Lido Penthouse cabins. Seriously considering it for the 19 day Panama Canal in 2016 roundtrip from LAX. Thanks in advance. I certainly will but I'm sure the two previous cruises will as well as there is quite a lot of interest in the post drydock work.

LoriPhil Posted May 16, 2015 #359 Share Posted May 16, 2015 There are still many things to love on the Island configuration - forward horizon court, comfy wheelhouse bar and yes even the wide promenade deck with those big teak lounge chairs (just cut through the aft doors to make the circuit). I'm hoping people enjoy the experience and am looking forward to the reports back. However, we did cancel our Island cruise to Alaska next year and will do a B2B on the Star instead. With that much money riding on the trip and some of our favorite viewing locations gone or altered (the big card room, the nice big library, covered pool area, public aft deck viewing) we didn't want to risk it on such an intensively scenic-cruising itinerary. Like everyone here, really interested in seeing the completed version!

dmwnc1959 Posted May 16, 2015 #361 Share Posted May 16, 2015 (edited) A few pictures of earlier work done during this refit, these were captioned as 'changing out the transformers'... These next two pictures look more recent with the fresh hull paint... Those two large holes just above and to the right of the ship's name appear to be the balcony for the new S5 aft suite PR727. The two smaller windows just above the ship's name appear to be the new ocean view cabins PR728 and PR729. The four windows below the ship's name are new ocean view cabins F724, F726, F727, and F725 Now this picture, and the one posted earlier on another thread, lead me to question whether the last balcony cabin on Promenade Deck (PR722 and PR723) with have a steel bulkhead and not a glass one... And finally a side shot showing the funnel. If those large windows amidships below the promenade deck (what use to be the Casino port side) are now for the new ocean view cabins, it reminds me of the Millennium-class and the new ocean view cabins built just aft on the starboard side of the atrium on Plaza Deck. Those have huge windows. (Credit all images to Lorenzo75) Edited May 16, 2015 by dmwnc1959

Thumper69 Posted May 16, 2015 #369 Share Posted May 16, 2015 Does anyone have images of the whole aft? I would love to see all the changes further up. I've booked L721 for a Panama Canal next Feb. Thanks

Astro Flyer Posted May 16, 2015 #372 Share Posted May 16, 2015 (edited) Aesthetics sometimes goes a long way. We'll see next week! ;) For me aesthetics is a factor however those excellent side-by-side deck plan comparisons you previously posted graphically show too many changes that I don't like without waiting until next week :( I hate to be redundant but know that some will wonder "how do you know you won't like it before getting on the ship?". I've sailed the Island & Coral several times & the deck plans show too many negative changes for me. Thus I don't require viewing them in person & one of my favorite ships will be a much less desirable ship. I never say never & if the itinerary and total cost are good would consider the Island. :) Edited May 16, 2015 by Astro Flyer
LoriPhil Posted May 16, 2015 #373 Share Posted May 16, 2015 Yay, that's good news - yes we had thought there were changes to the lido that included a revamp of the covered pool. Very pleased to see that part is intact.
IECalCruiser Posted May 16, 2015 #374 Share Posted May 16, 2015 Actually, there was a post from someone on the TA who stated that the Universe Lounge was closed, at least for part of the cruise, and they didn't miss it. The other venues handled the activities. I would assume the the wheelhouse bar will be used for more activities. We have been on four cruises on the Coral and Island and the sight lines from the upper level are/were for the most part very poor.
dmwnc1959 Posted May 17, 2015 #375 Share Posted May 17, 2015 Thanks Dave for the photos...I haven't seen such "balconies" in many decades with only a section of the hull removed for a view. I vaguely remember one of the P&O ships (Oriana?) adding balcony cabins where there had previously been none. They cut out the large picture windows of the old venue/spaces and then built 'balconies' into the side of the aft superstructure. The end result was more like a hull-balcony than a traditional superstructure-balcony. :D
